Messenlah is one ol the most popular
bands on the Canadian club circuit,
taking its infectiously sunny music from
the CarribEan direct to dancers and listeners.
But therE's an edge to Messenjah's
music - sure you can dance, but
lhere's plenty lo think about loo.
Marla Muldaur began her career as
the fiddle player wilh the Even Dozen
Jug Band - and her contributions to
music since have included hll records
(is there anyone who doesn't remem'
ber Midnight at the Oasis?l and aiazzinflscted
live performance unit that
swings in a decidedly posilive way.
She has mads numerous records in a
variety of idioms, and one of her best
was a powerful gospel album recorded
with the Chambers Brothers. Expect
fireworks at Mariposa from Muldaur -
this is her first appearance at the festival,
and she'll raise some eyebrows.
Her music today is a reminder that the
jazz, gospel, and folk worlds are indeed
connested.
San Murata and Terry Jones
will present a concert of what
Jones calls "sentimental songs
from the '30s and'40s". Jones is a
onetime member of Perth CountY
Conspiracy; Murata is one of Canada's
leading graphic artists and has
been responsible for the design
and execution of the MariPosa Poster
this year. He's also a fine fiddler.
Erlc Nagler shuns the label of "children's
entertainer". lnstead, he calls
himself a "family singef - and that's
just about the most accurate descrip
tion anyone cpuld comE up with. He's a
banjo and liddle player who also rips
olf cheerful solos on the sewerphone
(a miraculous contraption of his own
devising) and a dozen olher instruments.
He's popular with kids of all
ages as the result of his solo @ncerts
and his numerous appearances on The
Elephant Showwith his friends Sharon,
Lois & Bram.
Nazka is a group that specializes in the
music of Soulh America's Andean regions,
and was formed in Toronlo two
years ago. Two of the group's members,
Miguel Vasquez and Jos6 Sanhueza,
had performed in a group with
the same name in Chile, while the other
members (Rodrigo Chavez, StEve
Wingfield, Edgardo Moreno and Jayne
Browne) had all played in other bands
specializing in South p-rris31 61gsic.
New Grass Revlval is one of the very
best Nashville bands around -four
first-rank bluegrass players who believe
it isnt sacrilege to rock out, play Marvin
Gaye hits, and add a new-PennY shine
and unbeatable energy to the bluegrass
tradition. The band has been recording
since 1972, with lounders Sam Bush
(mandolin) and John Cowan (bass and
lead vocals) ioined by Bela Fleck (banjo)
and Pat Flynn (guitar). ln their early
days, NGR used to bs the suPPort acl
for Leon Russell, but now they're earning
headline status on their own. And
on the rare occasions when thoy're not
on ihe road, Bush and Fleck, in particular,
have flourishing careers as Nashville
session players.
