New material
But 1963 will be decisive. It opens
with a tour of Britain, in which our
young lions open for well-known rock
stars, including Roy Orbison. To such
rock anthems as Roll Over Beethoven
and Long Tall Sally, they add their own
compositions, including Twist and Shout,
whose dance steps will become a craze.
Their rock becomes edgier.
Just six days after the start of the
tour, Please Please Me hits the top of the
British charts. In March their first album
is released. It too heads for number one,
where it will remain an incredible seven
months!
On April 11th they release their third
single, From Me to You, backed with
Thank You Girl.
On the 18th Paul meets actress Jane
Asher at the Royal Albert Hall. Less
than a month later they will be engaged.
In the same month is born John and
Cynthia’s son Julian.

Secret is in second place on the charts,
behind From Me to You. In July they
record additional songs for a new album,
With the Beatles. On August 3rd they play
their 292nd gig at the Cavern Club. It
will be their last.
With their appearance on the TV’s
popular Sunday Night at the Palladium,
with its 15 million viewers, Beatlemania
becomes a tidal wave that engulfs even
the Royal Family.
In October the Beatles tour Sweden,
and the following month they open a
new British tour in Cheltenham. At a
command performance attended by the
Queen Mother and Princess Margaret,
John invites “those of you in the cheap
seats” to clap along, “and the rest of you,
if you could just rattle your jewelry.” The
Queen Mother smiles gracefully.
Their new album takes a mere five
days to top the charts, and won’t budge
from that spot over the next 21 weeks. It
includes 14 new songs signed by John and
Paul, and one by George. At the end of
November they release their fifth single,
and the fourth at the top of the charts,
I Want to Hold Your Hand. It bumps She
Loves You from number one.
They end this astonishing year with
The Beatles Christmas Show in London,
which will run 16 nights. They are now
launched toward a national career which
is becoming international. It will lead
them to the conquest of America.
Beatlemania
The year 1964 begins like a Titan
rocket headed for orbit. The Beatles are
a hit in Paris before flying to New York,
where 3000 screaming fans await them
at the airport.
