Congratulations to everyone who entered the 2012 <strong>ADDY</strong> Awards! This annual<br />

celebration <strong>of</strong> creative talent is for everyone who successfully transformed a rough<br />

idea into a piece <strong>of</strong> advertising genius. This annual showcase <strong>of</strong> our very best is<br />

inspiring and reassuring that indeed, a great deal <strong>of</strong> talented people make up the<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ad</strong>vertising <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toledo</strong>. Even if you don’t walk away with some<br />

gold, you should be proud that your work exemplifies creativity and a little bit <strong>of</strong><br />

genius, and that’s no handful <strong>of</strong> mud.<br />

Special congratulations go to the 2012 Silver Medal Award Winner, Jerry Brown.<br />

From his garage-based business to nationally known industry leader, Jerry<br />

exemplifies the spirit <strong>of</strong> entrepreneurship and talent, mixed with some generosity<br />

Silver Medal Award Winner<br />

JERRY BROWN<br />

Jerry Brown founded BusinessVoice as an On Hold<br />

Marketing (OHM) agency in 1989. At the time, there<br />

were relatively few companies that provided OHM,<br />

let alone specialized in the service, but Jerry had<br />

the foresight to see that On Hold Marketing could<br />

become an important tool for all types <strong>of</strong> businesses. Today, there are several<br />

hundred OHM providers in the United States alone.<br />

As President <strong>of</strong> BusinessVoice, Jerry oversees the strategic direction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

agency. He is also a National Account Executive and an active member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

marketing team.<br />

Over the last 23 years, Jerry’s vision has led to the development <strong>of</strong> many<br />

other services, from TeleGreeting and the BusinessVoice News Network, to<br />

LobbyVision In-Store Video, Point-Of-Purchase Audio, and Aroma Marketing.<br />

Through WebArt, its in-house web company, BusinessVoice also provides<br />

Website Design and Development, Website Marketing and Email Marketing.<br />

Today, BusinessVoice delivers services that impact its clients at three “points<br />

<strong>of</strong> entry” – their telephone, website and front door. By re-positioning the<br />

agency as a provider <strong>of</strong> “Point-Of-Entry Marketing” solutions, Jerry Brown<br />

has further distinguished BusinessVoice in the minds <strong>of</strong> prospective clients.<br />

The BusinessVoice team now helps clients build customer share on the phone,<br />

on-site and online at thousands <strong>of</strong> locations across the country.<br />

Jerry is a founding member <strong>of</strong> the On Hold Messaging Association, an<br />

international trade organization that promotes the benefits <strong>of</strong> OHM and<br />

works to maintain the high pr<strong>of</strong>essional standards <strong>of</strong> its more than 60<br />

member companies. He has served as the association’s Chairman and as the<br />

head <strong>of</strong> the Marketing Committee.<br />

Jerry also has been very active in the <strong>Ad</strong>vertising <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toledo</strong>. He has<br />

served as President, Vice President, <strong>ADDY</strong> Chairman and Auction Chairman.<br />

Under Jerry’s leadership, BusinessVoice has been recognized more than<br />

100 times by local, regional and national award competitions for creative<br />

and marketing excellence. These honors include Best <strong>of</strong> Show at the 2009<br />

5th District <strong>ADDY</strong>s, two local Best <strong>of</strong> Show <strong>ADDY</strong> awards, three Judge’s

Choice <strong>ADDY</strong>s, and three 5th District <strong>ADDY</strong>s, plus several category <strong>ADDY</strong>s<br />

and certificates.<br />

In addition to supporting <strong>Ad</strong> <strong>Club</strong> programs that benefit the community,<br />

Jerry has taken an active role in helping others. For many years, Jerry<br />

and BusinessVoice donated time, money, food and other supplies to the<br />

Huntington Center in Sylvania, Ohio. The center was also the beneficiary <strong>of</strong><br />

several fundraising efforts by BusinessVoice employees.<br />

For several years, Jerry has worked on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toledo</strong>’s Old Newsboys,<br />

raising money for their programs that support needy children. He recruits<br />

BusinessVoice employees and others to volunteer their time during the<br />

Newsboys’ annual paper sale fundraiser.<br />

Jerry also spent many seasons as a volunteer football coach, working with<br />

young athletes to impart his skills and experience.<br />

When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, Jerry came to the<br />

rescue <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>it On Hold, a competitor and fellow member <strong>of</strong> the On Hold<br />

Messaging Association. Jerry donated digital OHM systems and the<br />

production / studio services <strong>of</strong> BusinessVoice to help the company stay in<br />

business after the area’s devastating floods.<br />

Jerry Brown is a multi-faceted man: a client-focused Account Executive; a<br />

committed leader; a visionary entrepreneur; an athlete and musician. But,<br />

perhaps most importantly, he is a loving, dedicated father to his two sons,<br />

a tremendous friend, and a warm, generous human being. He rejoices in<br />

everyday life and inspires those around him to excel in all that they do.<br />

Who could hope for a more pr<strong>of</strong>ound legacy?<br />

About Mark:<br />

Mark Canavan is driven to create work that touches people. He is a student <strong>of</strong> the<br />

consumer and loves getting at life’s shared truths. He is passionate about building<br />

strong brands and loves finding new ways to engage people. His unique vision has<br />

helped develop brands like The Detroit Medical Center, Karmanos Cancer Center, Charter<br />

Cable, Ameritech and Domino’s Pizza. Mark’s recent successes include award-winning<br />

campaigns for Colonial Williamsburg and Pure Michigan.<br />

“I chose the TARTA Gas Guzzling campaign largely because it was actually a campaign.<br />

And it had a real concept. Too <strong>of</strong>ten design or technology is used as a substitute for a<br />

concept but that doesn’t work. This campaign had a real concept. And as a bonus, that<br />

concept was 100% easy to understand with just a glance. If you saw one <strong>of</strong> those gas<br />

guzzling faces and the TARTA logo, you got the entire message in a half a second.<br />

That’s what a concept is supposed to do. It’s a great campaign.”<br />

About Matt:<br />

Matt Harlow has spent his entire pr<strong>of</strong>essional life helping companies project the best<br />

possible brands to their prospects and live up to their brands for their customers. He’s been<br />

involved in the American <strong>Ad</strong>vertising Federation since college and has served at the local,<br />

district and national levels in the organization as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional. He has spoken to advertising<br />

and marketing organizations across America and taught several college advertising classes.<br />

Matt has BAs in Marketing and <strong>Ad</strong>vertising as well as an MBA from The Ohio State<br />

University. He has been in agency account service since 1987 and never regretted a<br />

minute <strong>of</strong> it! Currently he is the Director <strong>of</strong> Account Services at Perry Ballard, Inc., an<br />

“There were a number <strong>of</strong> truly exceptional entries in the 2012 <strong>Toledo</strong> <strong>ADDY</strong>s. This :60<br />

commercial for ProMedica is the piece that resonated with me the most. Powerful<br />

copywriting, without the use <strong>of</strong> a voiceover. Beautiful cinematography. Truly believable<br />

scenarios. National quality casting. And, dramatically powerful music. Together, the<br />

pieces fit perfectly, and the spot actually got me a little choked up. Does this make me<br />

any less <strong>of</strong> a man? Probably. But to me, this spot rose to the top.”<br />

About Steve:<br />

Steve Schaeffer, Creative Director at Creative Dimensions in Cincinnati, has crafted<br />

award-winning work for some <strong>of</strong> the most iconic brands in Greater Cincinnati over the<br />

past 20 plus years. He currently oversees the creative for the largest tire retailer in the<br />

world, TBC Brands based in Palm Beach, Florida. Outside <strong>of</strong> advertising, his passions<br />

include antiques, restoring his 170-year-old Victorian home and horseracing. Oh, and his<br />

wife and kids <strong>of</strong> course.

“The BGSU Stroh Center fundraising video was fantastic for a lot <strong>of</strong> reasons. First, because it<br />

was VERY brave. Just taking that concept to the client, took more nerve than a lot <strong>of</strong> shops<br />

could ever possibly muster. Once the concept was approved, they could have fallen on their<br />

face in any one <strong>of</strong> a thousand places during the production. What if the donors wouldn’t play<br />

ball or the rapper wasn’t quite good enough. But none <strong>of</strong> that happened, and the end result<br />

was fantastic, clever, relevant and funny. And while I certainly would have been proud to<br />

have produced that video at our shop, I would have been equally proud to have been creative<br />

enough to conceive <strong>of</strong> it in the first place and brave enough to take it to the client. All around,<br />

it was a piece <strong>of</strong> great work.”<br />
