first three innings, be surrendered
CC's pivotal five run fourth, hs
focad five batters, walking three
and got tagged for a three-run
triple. The fifth batter reached
baM on an error.
Stankewics lasted five innings
for the Shamrocks. He gave up
three runs (two earned) on 10 hits
and two walks, improving his
record to 8-4. -
Salem from page 1C
grounder to bounce through his
legs. Bentley multiplied the prob
lem by walking Jason Couture,
loading the bases with none out.
That brought Kevin Thomas,
CC's freshman center fielder, to
the plate. "I was looking for s
fastball, because he wasn't getting
bis curve over." Thomas recalled
"I missed the pilch on a 3-and-l
count and be gave me the same
thing on 3-and-2. and I hit it
hard"
Hard and to the right spot.
Thomas' line drive rolled all the
way to the fence in right-center
field, and Thomas rolled all the
way to third base
CC bad a 4-1 lead.
Thomas' hit didn't exactly
surprise CC coach John Salter,
simply because be didn't know
what to expect. "He's the kind of
kid you just don't know what he s
going to do," Salter said. Hell
make a bonehead play one inning
and a great play the next "
Thomas' bit wasn't the end of
CC's inning. Bentley pitched to
one more batter, walking Mike
Homant. Marcis relieved, and he
induced another freshman, catch
er Mike Biane. to hit a foul fly to
right that Jeff Mackiewicx eyebelled
— then dropped. The error
gave Biane another chance, and
he delivered a run scoring single.
That brought up the top of the
order and Greg Rogers. With
runners on first and second and
no one out. Rogers pushed a bunt
toward first. Marcis bobbied it
but fielded it, then found he had
no one to throw to at first. First
baseman Dan Quaine charged the
ball and second baseman Kax
Kurisu did not cover tbe bag.
For the second time in the inning.
the bases were loaded —
and still none were out. Marcis
struck out Chris Misiak and got
Mike Daguanno to ground out to
second, but another run scored to
make it 6-1.
The number of hits produced in
the first four innings indicated
the Rocks would not go quietly.
Brad Lear punctuated that, lead
ing off the Salem fifth by driving
a Stankewicx pitch over the left
"Their kid threw bard," Salter
aaid of Bentley. "But then be got
behind (in the count). Hia wild*
ness gave ua an opportunity.
"Stankewicx was able to get ua
thoae five inninga."
Which set it up for freshman
lefthander Kevin Thomas to close
out the game. He did juat that: no
runs, one hit. one welk. one
etrikeout.
And a trip to the semifinals.
field fence for a solo home run.
After Ahmande Grimes died deep
to center. Quaine, Mackiewicx
and Ryan Rumberger all singled
to load the bases.
An ideal opportunity — but
this waa to be a day of misses for
the Rocks. They managed to score
just one run. on Mike Brannan S
ground out.
For the game. Salem totaled 10
biu but stranded 11 baaerunners.
CC left seven runners on base.
"The game's a aeries of oppor
tunities." said a philoeophical
Dale Rumberger "If you don't
take advantage of them, you go
home."
At the start, it seemed tbe
breaks would favor Salem. A twoout
single by Mackiewicx in the
third proved important when
Ryan Rumberger's grounder in
the hole between short and third
was misplayed by Miaiak. His
wild throw to first allowed Mack
iewicx to race all tbe way home
with the game's first run.
CC tied it in tbe third on a walk
to Homant. two sacrifice bunts
and Misiak's two-out single to
left. The Shamrocks iced it with
two runs in the sixth, both scoring
on Couture's two-out double to
left-center field. f
Salter pulled Stankewicx, who
pitched five innings the previous
Saturday, after five innings and
let Thomas, a left-hander, finish
• He did not give up a bit or a run.
walking one and striking out one.
"With the top of their order
coming up, I thought it was a
good time to bring in another
pitcher they hadn't seen before,
said Salter.
CC got two hits apiece from
Rogers and Misiak. with Thome,
driving in three runs and Couture
two. Ryan Rumberger led Salem
with three hita; Mackiewicx and
Lear had two each.
But even though Salem outhit
CC 10-8. Rock pitchers issued
seven walks to three by the Sham
rocks. Which b why in the end
the only number that really
mattered — the score — slso favored
the Shamrocks.
