Today* a holiday! At least on my calendar.
It Myt right here on the 15th, "last day of
school — summer vscstion begins ."
This calendar, the one that's nine months long
and ends in June, is really the only calendar we
pay attention to around here. The time between
June and September? We don't mark, it; we don't
keep track of »t. Time goes right on out the window
for three months every year in my house
This nine-month calendar is as normal as bare
feet, fireflies, ice cream trucks and blue skies
But there are many people whose calendars
aren't like that at all. Their calendar and their
pace is relentless — day after day, month after
month, year after year, no summers off. no
three month breaks And there's a group out
there who actually trumpet and c*lebrata toe
unrelenting nature of their work and life. Thornare
the folks who bnng us our mail

"nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers
from the swift completion of their appointed
rounds " Nothing stops them Not even a holiday
like today
Judy Smith can confirm that. She's a mail
earner working out of the Livonia Post Office.

Docents explain garden's secrets

Tour guides at
the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and
Conservatory in Ann Arbor, known
as docenta, have learned a trick,
however. They use the Hawaiian
Punch method of teaching
Docents like Plymouth's Graham
Markes give children a first-hand
look at the fruits like guava and papaya
found in the drink.
They'll never see these unless
they go to tropical islands like
Hawaii, Tahiti or the Caribbean islands,"
he aaid.
The old saying goes "familiarity
breeds contempt," but not with children
who visit the botanical gardens
Markes rubs the . two ends of s
lemon tree leaf together and aaks
them what it reminds them of
Lemon Pledge.
Many children — and even adults
— probably never knew thst bananas
grow upward, until docents
•how them.
Chocoholics are intrigued by
chocolate trees and the beans that
are ground to make cocoa.
-We use common names and try
to tell the children something that ia
of interest to them." he said.

sects and birds know that there's a
flower waiting to be pollinated.
Flowers on a popsicle plant are
tucked inside brightly colored leaves
that serve as beacons to the poll ins- •
tors, signaling the presence of the
flower itself.
Volunteering as s docent was a
natural progression for the retired
chemist. Markes was always interested
in plants and was curious
about the position after seeing s notice
in the Plymouth Observer nearly
six years ago.
In addition to being a docent,
Markes and hia wife Elizabeth volunteer
in the greenhouse, planting
seedlings and transplanting plants,
as well as preparing for the annual
flower show.
