Spiral Tree Guards 

Widely used to protect young trees (standards, seedlings, transplants, single stem 

hedge plant varieties) against damage from browsing animals such as rabbit, hare, 

sheep and roe deer. 

These low cost units are quick and simple to install, often without the need for 

additional tree stakes or support fastenings. 

A major advantage of Spiral Guards is their ability to grow with the tree as it matures, 

without risk of strangulation or having to remove them after establishment is achieved.

Spiral Tree Guards are manufactured from 100% 

recycled PVC (a long lasting outdoor plastic) 

providing at least 4 growing seasons of 

protection, even at high UV exposure levels. PVC 

ultimately breaks down through photo-degradation, which will not harm the earth 

around the tree plantation. 

Spiral tree guards have been used as the preferred method for hedge planting for many 

years. They offer the easiest, quickest and cheapest way of installing hedgerows and 

produce effective hedges with plenty of side and low growth. 

With of without ventilation holes? Experience shows that young trees develop more 

reliably with spirals that include Ventilation Holes. These reduce the effects of mildew 

and leaf burn, both of which stunt young tree growth. However, if the area is going to 

be regularly sprayed with any chemicals the ‘no holes’ option should be used. 

In areas not being sprayed, the use of a suppressant Weed Mat is recommended to 

reduce the use of chemicals and the potential for disease.

Bamboo canes 

The ideal way to secure tree spirals quickly and efficiently. Canes are natural products 

subject to variability so please allow for this when ordering by anticipating a small 

percentage of breakages. 

Canes should be inserted to a depth of at least 30cm. When planting into cultivated or 

lighter soils, consider using a longer cane of improved stability. On windy sites it is 

recommended to use heavier canes for increased stability. Suitable for all tree spirals 

and Tubex Easywrap.

Tree Protectors, Guards and Grilles 

On many urban and rural sites, newly planted trees need protection from vandalism, 

machinery and animals. Often wire mesh guards and other protection methods are not 

sufficient to effectively protect the tree. Tree guards are the ideal solution to protect semimature 

trees from harmful damage. Protection is offered to the most vulnerable area of 

the tree – the trunk. Guards can be used without grilles where preferred. 

Designed and manufactured to a high standard, the guards come with a galvanised 

finish as standard or high specification black polymer coated. Unique ‘drive-in’ feet 

locking system secures guards into the ground. Supplied in two halves, the guards are 

bolted together using corrosion resistant bolts supplied. Available in 40cm or 60cm 

diameter with matching grilles.

Tree Grills and Frames 

Protection of the complex root system of the tree, whilst adding character and when placed 

in paved/concreted areas they can prevent compaction to the surrounding soil. Available in 

3 different sizes and supplied as standard with black painted finish or optional black 

polymer coated. Supplied in two halves and fitted with 150mm legs enabling frame and 

grille to be securely fastened into the ground. Lockable frames improve security further by 

allowing frame, guard and grille to be bolted together.

Tubex Tree Shelters 

These provide a micro-climate for trees resulting in improved establishment and higher 

survival rates. This allows for the planting of smaller trees, which are cheaper and easier to 

source and, ultimately lead to trees with stronger root systems. Also, higher air moisture 

within the tree shelter reduces water stress and enables the plant to survive in dry or drought 

conditions. 

Tubex shelters are ‘nested’ for easy transportation and storage and thumb releaseable ties 

are pre-fitted for fast application (using a suitable size stake). Tubex shelters also provide 

protection in a flexible, efficient and cost effective way against animals, including rabbit, 

hare and deer, and also herbicide damage. 

For tougher jobs, providing a slightly wider diameter than the Standard, the Standard Plus 

comes in a range of heights from 1.2-1.8m. 

Tips: Choice of shelter height depends on wildlife present on site. Use quality stakes (canes 

will need replacing) inserted into the ground to 1/3rd of the stake height. Ensure the stake is 

below the flared rim at the top of the shelter. Using the shelter natural strength, push it lightly 

into the ground to remove gaps at the base.

These shelters contain lower levels of UV stabilisers 

than the Standard trees shelters and will begin to 

break down over a shorter period. They offer reliable 

protection against rabbits and voles at 0.6m and

protection and are suitable for slender plants such as 

used in hedging and small scale landscaping.

Defender Tree Shelter 

Offering faster tree establishment and growth and 

increased survival rates and reduced maintenance. 

The square construction of the Defender-Pro enables 

‘flat-pack’ transportation, and the use of a stake 

directly into the shelter removes the need for a cable 

tie. Made from100% recyclable UV stabilised 

polypropylene, the shelter has a built-in radial top lip 

to minimise abrasion to the tree stem and a line of 

least resistance to ensure the shelter splits open as the 

girth of the tree increases. 

Harmless to the environment; durable twin-wall

Arbortech Strimmer Guard 

A robust, conical tree guard that is designed to deflect strimmer cord 

when trimming and protect trees from damage for a minimum of 7 

years. Manufactured from robust HDPE. 

Planet Guards 

A combination herbicide and mesh guard that protects at the base 

the young plant from herbicide damage and the upper mesh 

sections protect against rodents. The lower section is translucent to 

ensure good light diffusion, so beneficial to plant growth. Range of

Tree Stakes 

Sourced from both UK and overseas, these stakes have been carefully selected for 

quality and consistency. 

Softwood: Pressure tested to BS8417:2003 standards to provide long term protection 

against fungi and pests. 

Hardwood: Slightly stronger than softwood so less breakages likely. 

Both options offer a range of lengths and diameters to suit all shelter sizes and site 

conditions. Unless stated, all stakes are four pointed for ease of installation and are 

bundled in easy-to-carry quantities.

Arboresin 

A resin bonded gravel that provides a hard-wearing, 

attractive, porous tree pit surface. Loose stones create 

a nuisance in pedestrian environments and the 

conventional paving of surfaces has the effect of 

creating an impervious cap over the tree pit. 

With a resin bonded gravel surface, stones are bound 

together and prevented from migrating beyond the tree 

pit area. Rotary pavement sweepers can easily run 

over resin bound surfacing without displacing the 

stones.

This tree guying system has many advantages over tree 

staking and is suitable for large root-balled trees. The rootball 

is held in position by driving three guying anchors into the 

base of the tree pit and then fastening a rachet strand and, if 

required, the system can be re-tensioned later.

Terram RootGuard Root Barrier 

Used to protect buildings, paths, pipes, cables etc from potential root growth damage. 

Depending on the application, and specifically whether water wants needs to pass through 

the product or not, there are two solutions:

Impermeable: Terram RootGuard Plus which is a 

composite of Terram RootGuard and HDPE 

membrane for when no requirement for water to 

pass through the barrier. This product will provide 

the greatest protection. 

Permeable: When it is necessary to have a waterpermeable 

solution, e.g. surrounding land drains. 

Whilst permeable barriers may not provide the 

highest level of protection (see RootGuard above), 

they still provide some resistance. 

Terram RootGuard has high tensile strength and puncture resistance. Both products are 

chemically inert to natural soil conditions and resistant to biodegradation. 

Ecoplug Max 

The new effective way to solve a ‘growing’ 

problem 

Each Ecoplug Max contains 300 mg of 

formulated glyphosate herbicide. 

Trees growing close to buildings, roads, 

powerlines, bridges, amenity areas and heritage 

sites can be a problem. Once the trees are felled, 

the stumps will sprout new growth unless treated. 

Ecoplug Max is a little ingenious plug that is 

inserted into a tree or a stump. The herbicide, 

enclosed within the plug, will kill off the entire root 

system but will have no effect on surrounding 

trees or vegetation and, will not affect people, 

animals or the wider environment. 

Ecoplug Max has a high efficacy rating of 95- 

100% and its selective method will reduce the use 

of chemicals by 90%, compared to traditional 

methods. 

How to Apply Ecoplug Max 

Step 1: Cut the tree as close to the ground as 

possible. 

Step 2: Drill into the stump using a 13mm wide 

drill bit. Rigby Taylor supply a special drill for this 

purpose that has a stop plate at 30mm allowing precise depth control. 

Step 3: Place an Ecoplug in the hole with the orange end first. The top will protrude by 

about 10mm. 

Step 4: Hit the Ecoplug with a hammer until the head is flush with the stump. The 

impact will to push out the sides of the plug in the stump and the herbicide is released. 

Used at any time of the year and in any weather conditions. The plugs once inserted are 

sealed into the sump preventing any herbicide movement outside the area treated. 

Effective on a wide range of tree species.

Ground Reinforcement Grids 

Rite-Pave 

The Problem: 

Any area of ground, subject to pedestrian, animal or vehicular traffic, is subject to 

erosion of some description, the prevention of which requires some form of surface 

reinforcement. Traditionally, this has been done using concrete, tarmac or block paving. 

Without any form of reinforcement system. Surfaces can become rutted, boggy and 

slippery. All these conditions are not just unsightly but can be dangerous for all means 

of traffic. 

Traditional solutions are not environmentally friendly and contribute to the growing 

problem of urban hot spots, which cause concern to the ozone layer. All such systems 

require the implementation of extra drainage systems and are not necessarily compliant 

with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) regulations. These problems apply 

not just to traffic areas but parking areas, temporary access routes and rooftops, all of 

which are contributing to rising temperatures and increasing flood risk zones. 

The Solution: 

Rite-Pave reinforcement systems are designed for long term use, providing a porous 

substrate support system, which holds earth, grass or gravel. 

A reinforced porous surface retains water for gradual release to the drainage systems 

and absorbs heat more effectively. Another key benefit is that such surfaces can greatly 

enhance the appearance of any area and more frequently they are seeded with grass.

Grass Reinforcement Mesh 

The ideal product to protect grass against damage from pedestrians, the parking of light 

vehicles and access routes. The mesh is a tough, flexible, long lasting ‘grid’ used to 

permanently reinforce grassed areas, thereby preventing them from rutting and 

becoming muddy when used by vehicles and/or pedestrians. 

It is vital that the grass be allowed to grow through the mesh before use to ensure that 

the surface is strong and safe. The mesh ‘vanishes’ as the grass grows through the 

mesh, leaving the appearance of a natural grassed area.

Wild flowers are vitally important to pollinating 

insects such as bees, butterflies and a wild 

flower meadow is a great way to help 

encourage biodiversity in the garden. It will 

attract such creatures as moths, frogs, small 

mammals, insects and birds. 

What is Meadomat? 

It contains 34 species of British wild flowers impregnated on a thin layer of growing 

medium supported by a lightweight net. The mat is delivered with the plants already 

growing, so only needs to be installed onto a prepared surface. 

The mat is a quick and easy way to establish a wild flower meadow that is more 

reliable than seeding. By following the guidelines for installation and maintenance, 

excellent results can be achieved. 

Depending on the time of the year, it is possible that flowers will be seen within weeks

Enviromat Sedum Matting 

Matting consists of drought-tolerant plants 

grown on a unique matting system. The 

specially developed geotextile base offers ease

Reinforced Turf 

Fibreturf is the name for a natural turf growing in a synthetic fibre-reinforced rootzone. It 

is specially designed to obtain greater use of natural turf, whilst maintaining the high 

quality of surface demanded by present day landscape specifiers. 

The aim is achieved by blending together sand, organic matter and 35mm long 

polypropylene fibres to produce a homogeneous rootzone, termed Fibreturf rootzone. 

This rootzone is supplied in bulk tippers to be laid as the top 75-200mm, dependant 

upon end-use, thus producing a 'fibre re-inforced' or 'stabilised' upper rootzone. The 

natural turf finish is then produced by either seeding directly into the Fibreturf rootzone, 

or by laying mature Fibreturf which has been pre-grown by specialist turf supplier Inturf.

Qualgex is for use on hard surfaces such as concrete, paving, tarmac and bricks to 

treat algae, moss and lichen. It is not suitable for treating moss on grassed surfaces. 

Can be used at any time of year to a wide variety of external hard surfaces and can be 

applied by brush, mop or surface spray and is ideally used when the 

algae/moss/lichen is actively growing and conditions are moist. 

It is essential that surfaces to be cleaned are thoroughly wetted with the product. With

Control Treatment

The use of a tank-mix combination of Kerb Flo + Flexidor 125 offers the landscape 

manager the perfect answer to the control of weeds in various situations where 

previously dichlobenil-based products were used. 

Kerb Flo is a pre- and post-emergence residual herbicide providing long-term weed

control. The active ingredient propyzamide acts by inhibiting cell division within the 

weed plant causing disruption of the various growth processes which results in death of 

the weed. 

Flexidor 125 is a pre-emergence herbicide and acts by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, 

being absorbed by germinating broad-leaved weed seeds, preventing them from 

establishing themselves. 

How to use 

This tank-mix can be used to control a wide range of weeds in a variety of situations 

including around ornamental trees, shrubs and rose beds, and in recreational areas. 

Apply in autumn and winter from 1st October-31st January. 

Where established perennial weeds e.g. docks, thistles, are already present, a spot 

treatment of glyphosate will be needed to remove them. When spraying ornamental 

plantings near turf, care should be taken to avoid any spray drift onto grasses.

How to apply 

Apply as a medium/coarse spray. Soil moisture is needed to help the Flexodor 125 

move into the upper 5cm of soil and control the weeds as they germinate. Dry soils will

Ensure there is a grass buffer zone between the area of application and any 

watercourse/channel. This buffer zone should be a minimum of 6 metres wide 

measured from top to bottom of the watercourse bank. Long runs and slopes of more 

than 5% may need a buffer zone of up to 20 metres or more.

a disc with a spray pattern appropriate to the task in hand. 

Perennial grasses are susceptible when tillering and new rhizome 

growth commences (normally 4-5 leaves). Perennial broadleaved 

weeds are more susceptible if treated at or near flowering, 

but will be severely checked if treated at any time during active 

growth. It does not affect mature bark so can be used right up to 

the base of woody trees and shrubs.
