that a mix of perennial
rye grass and blue
grass works well,” said

“It’s also important to
use a good organic or
standard starter fertilizer.”
When grass
finally does sprout,
it’s critical to keep it
healthy. “In your yard,
the key to success is
to fertilize, water and
test your soil to make
sure it has the right
alkalinity and pH,” said Rosenbaum. “If you
keep your lawn and soil healthy, then the weeds
will go away.”
Lawn sprinkler systems are a great way to
improve grass conditions. “Lawn sprinklers
are efficient, save money and don’t force you
to move hoses or turn the hose tap on and off,”
said Brian Brendel, owner and estimator of
Brendel’s Lawn Sprinkling in Bismarck.
Besides offering

a reduced water bill,
increased leisure
time and healthier
plants, there are a few
things you should
know before having
one installed.
“If you are building
a new house, it’s best
to put the sprinkler
system in during the
construction phase,
or before you put
the grass in,” said
Brendel. “You’ll also
need a separate water
line pumped to the
outside of the house.”
Those with sprinkler
systems also
need to contact an
installer in the fall to
get remaining water pumped from the sprinkler
pipes to protect their system (winterization).
