Quality is a save Investment
The Hanoverian Stallion Sales 2012 in October provided two very positive signals:
Stallion managers trust the future and invested. Sporthorse customers bought firstclass
rising talents for top competitions. Both motives for purchasing a stallion on the
stallion market are good for the Hanoverian breed.
By Dr. Werner Schade

Even though these times are not easy for stallion
managers we must respect and honor the
intent to offer stallions of high quality to the breeders.
There is only one reason for competitors to
take the long road with a two-year old prospect.
The goal is to purchase a top horse at a young age.
In other words quality is in demand and has its
price.
The expectations for the stallion licensing were
subdued early on. Declining breedings are not really
an incentive for stallion managers. The effects
of the decline in young stallions from 700 to 564
for the pre-selection were in question. Looking
back we are able to report a good acceptance result
and more importantly a high level of quality in
both disciplines. Relatively quickly after the collection
had been posted on the Internet for review
the number of visitors reflected a great international
interest. A total of 87 stallions were presented
to the commission. The relation between dressage
and jumper stallions was 66 (34 percent dressage
to 57 (30 percent jumper stallions.
34 of 57 dressage stallions were licensed. A large
number of stallions with three very good basic
4 The Hanoverian 12|2012
gaits in addition to athleticism and good type distinguished
this year’s dressage collection. The positive
development in the stallions over the last years
in respect to push-off, the transmission of
power and the clarity of the rhythm has been successfully
continued.
The 57 dressage sires descended from 34 different
sires which is a very broad genetic pool. There was
no one individual dominant line this year. Ten stallions
each represented the lines of Bolero, Floristan
and Donnerhall while Belissimo M sired the largest
group of offspring with five sons. Dancier, Desperados,
Floriscount, Fürst Nymphenburg, Quarterback
and Royal Classic had sired three sons each. The
blood of Lauries Crusador xx only had a relatively
small presence with two sons by Londontime compared
to previous years. There was only one immediate
Thoroughbred son in the collection by Alberan
xx. The share of Thoroughbred blood from the
dam lines was much stronger. Seven of the eight
half-bred dams were by Lauries Crusador xx. As
with many other stallion examples that always had
a large number of immediate descendants, we can
now notice a transition of the increasing influence
on the damside. This is a very interesting development
especially for Thoroughbred sires.
Ten premium sires were selected out of the high
overall quality of dressage stallions. A noble son of
Christ/Don Schufro (breeder: Hans-Jürgen Hollmann,
Neerstedt; exhibitor: Heinrich Ramsbrock,
Menslage) that moved with a lot of elasticity while
Lunging of the stallions on the morning of the stallion
market. Photo: Beelitz
being very light on his feet received a premium.
The Breeding Farm Sprehe bought this stallion to
add to its stock of breeding stallions. The highest
priced stallion, a son of Dancier/Rotspon (breeder:
Jan-Niclaas von Holten, Langen; exhibitor: Detlef
Ruddat, Kirchlinteln) sold to the Breeding Station
Schockemoehle in Oldenburg. The quality of movement
in this impressive Dancier son is exceptional
and expressive. A son of top producer De Niro and
out of a dam by Londonderry (breeder: Anne Wester,
Stavern; exhibitor: Bernhard Kappelhoff, Beckum)
received the premium award, too. This
good-sized and interestingly bred stallion impressed
with his powerful, rhythmical movement
and will move into the barn of the Breeding Farm
Bonhomme.
Another D-blood representative was the son of
Diamond Hit/Florestan I (breeder: Nicole Wanning,
Schuettorf; exhibitor: ZG Wanning & Spitzer,
Schuettorf). This premium stallion is a true moving
acrobat. His energetic push-off in all gaits is combined
with an outstanding self-carriage. This exceptional
stallion will also join the State Stud Celle.
The Oldenburg sire Floriscount made a remarkable
entrance with his first vintage. He sired one premium
and two licensed stallions. Heinz Katt who is
from Stade presented a stallion out of a dam by
Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener, Jeanine Pagel, Dr. Werner
Schade and Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen entered the
Niedersachsenhalle for the stallion sales on coldblooded
horses. Photos: Ernst
Fürst Heinrich (breeder: Helmut Vietor, Weener)
that impressed with his very good type and his
supple uphill movement. The dressage experts graded
a premium stallion by Fürst Grandios/Weltmeyer
whose full-brother Fletcher filled everyone
with enthusiasm last year, mostly because of his
ability for collection. A partnership of breeders
from the three State Studs Marbach, Redefin and
Celle bought this stallion.
A Fürstenreich/Rotspon son (breeder: Alfred Reimann,
Oer-Erkenschwick; exhibitor: Barbara Koppelmann,
Freiburg) fit right in the group of powerful
movers. He beautifully mastered the tasks that
had been set before him during the licensing days
exhibiting a magnificent attitude. The noble liver
chestnut by Quando-Quando/Donnerhall (breeder:
Gabriele Berner, Bienenbuettel; exhibitor: Limbecker
GmbH & Co. KG, Bernried) was one of the
most striking stallions of the group. This premium
stallion impressed with his phenomenal walk in
addition to above average trot and canter movement.
Klosterhof Medingen acquired this stallion
for their breeding station.
A Soliman de Hus/Fürst Heinrich son (breeder: Josef
Bramlage, Sögel; exhibitor: Rainer Suhlmann,
Hemmelte) moved into the dressage barn of Heike
Kemmer. This premium stallion descends from a
strong performance line and is a dressage talent
with enormous potential. Even though this son of
Vivaldi/Donnerhall (breeder: Hans Heinrich
Schnadt, Rinteln; exhibitor: Rolf Trute, Cremlingen)
still has a lot of maturing to do he still attracted
everybody’s attention during his presentations. The
stallion showed off his abilities especially while
free-running. Hubertus Poll and the State Stud Celle
jointly held the last bid after a tough bidding
duel.
Typy jumper stallions
19 out of 30 jumper stallions were licensed. The
influence of Holstein blood was substantial just as
in previous years. Ten stallions descended from
Holstein sires and eight from Hanoverian sires. The
entire jumper cadre descended from 25 different
sires. Stakkato had the largest number of offspring
with three sons. Compatible with last year’s group
this year’s collection exhibited jumping ability and
carefulness and impressed with type and movement.
Seven jumper stallions were awarded a premium.
A Canstakko/Singular Joter I son (breeder: Klaus-
Heinrich Brinkmann, Heeslingen; exhibitor: Mathieu
Beckmann, Wettringen) embodied an athletic
model. This powerfully moving stallion approached
and jumped the fences with foresight and almost
fulfill the expectations. Even though the quality
was very high they did not measure up to last years
sale prices. The price structure with 34 licensed
stallions starting at EUR 25,000.00 is a success in
the current market situation as the purchase of a
2-year old is a long-term investment. A son of Dancier/Rotspon
received the highest bid. The buyer’s
group Schockemöhle/Helgstrand paid 320,000.00
Euros for him. A son of Vivaldi/Donnerhall received
the second highest sale price, 260,000.00 Euros,
followed by a son of Diamond Hit/Florestan I, who
sold for 220,000.00 Euros. State Stud manager Dr.
Axel Brockmann supplemented his stallion base
with strong and attractive additions that will benefit
the Hanoverian breeders. Other State Studs like
Marbach, Redefin and Dillenburg were active buyers.
The Stallion Station Wahler who bought a son
of Quando-Quando/Donnerhall for 200,000.00
Euros and the Stallion Station Schockemöhle made
sure with their purchases that very valuable stallions
of this collection remain in Lower Saxony. The
top selling price for non-licensed stallions was
57,000.00 Euros; the average price 19,250.00 Euros.
In addition to a strong market within the borders
of Germany foreign countries were also successful
bidders. A total of twenty-eight stallions
sold to foreign countries, This is not quite as high
as in previous years. Foreign bidders did not determine
the top sale price. The economic situation in
our neighboring countries showed its effects to
some degree. Our neighbor Belgium however
caught our attention with a total of six purchases.
An old connection that has grown over many years
resulted in a purchase. This is a clear indication of
the trust set in our young and rising Hanoverian
stallions. n
8 The Hanoverian 12|2012
„I enjoyed the course the licensing took. We did not
experienced hectic or stress throughout the freerunning
and free-jumping process once. This was
very good for the young horses; all were able to present
themselves properly. The base was very good
this year and I greatly enjoyed watching the stallions.
The W-blood appeared remarkably often on the
damside in the pedigrees of the vintage from 2010.
The D-blood was well represented and appears to
becoming more popular. This is a good development
as the representatives of this line have proven their
performance ability up to the Grand Prix-level in
dressage. All in all the combinations within the pedigrees
were highly interesting. The most important
elements in young stallions are subtle movement
and a good and active hind leg. The movement must
be elastic and show lots of impulsion. We get to see
canter strides during the free-running process. Lunging
the horses is also an essential part to forming
a concrete judgment.
A selection takes place over the course of the three
licensing days. The stallions clearly demonstrate, if
presented themselves pretty differently. The freerunning
The performance willingness of the horses today is
incredible. It is important to select the stallions as
early as possible. If a stallion does not keep under
saddle what he promised to become at the licensing
at two-and-a-half,then this will fix itself after a short
period of time.
Many successful sport horses were sold on the stallion
sales. I remember when Dr. Schulten-Baumer
purchased Satchmo in 1996. He was much sought
after by dressage as well as jumper horse breeders
and became one of the world’s best dressage horses
later. We riders attend the stallion sales because we
try to pinpoint good horses as early on as possible
even though it is a long way to the top for a twoand-a-half-year
old.”
old Lexington WS by Lazio/Watzmann (breeder:
Bruce & Sharon Telford, Tofield, Alberta;
owner: Tyler Keuber, Edmonton, Alberta) received
very good scores for her free-jumping
performance and finished as the best mare of
this test closely followed by Libertie by Likoto
xx/Evergreen (breeder/exhibitor: Trudie
Spengler, Nanton, Alberta).
The judges Hartmut Wilking and Dr. Axel
Brockmann selected Cuba by Cassus/Warkanson
(breeder/exhibitor: Georg von Platen,
Camrose, Alberta) as the best three-year old
in the show. In addition to earning the Iaprize
she was also awarded the elite mare
candidate status. The four-and five-year old
division was of high quality. Four-year old
Ruby Slippers by Royal Blend/Lord Sinclair
(breeder: Teradan Farms, Calgary; owner:
Alex Hampson, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories)
became Champion Mare in this class
as well as becoming Overall Show Champion
and Best Canadian Bred Mare. The foal show
was divided into dressage and jumper oriented
foals and was also well attended. A filly
by Le Primeur/Stakkato – bred and exhibited
by the host of Spruce Meadows, Family Southern
- became the unchallenged foal champion.
The sire Le Primeur is owned by Spruce
Meadows. He competes in jumper classes at
the S-level in addition to his services as a
breeding stallion. A colt by Quarterback/Feinbrand
(owner: Caroline Champigny, Edmon-
ton, Calgary) won the class for dressage foals.
Awarding the Best Hanoverian is another
highlight at the Spruce Meadows Masters.
The Nation Prize that was won by the German
team presented the perfect opportunity.
Embassy II by Escudo/Silvio (breeder: Dr. Bonny-Jasmin
of the winning team with rider Hans-Dieter
Dreher. Hartmut Wilking awarded Embassy II
with the title Best Hanoverian at the conclusion
of the Nation Prize.
The East
Two successful and well attended events followed
in Eastern Canada. One mare completed
the performance test at Parkwood Stables
in Rockwood, Ontario. Eighteen mares
participated in the following mare show.
Hypatia by His Highness/Waikiki (breeder:
Ferdinand Haupt; exhibitor: Marion Howard)
became the winner and the best Canadian
bred mare. Two additional mares received a
Ia-prize: La Vida by Londonderry/Brentacio
(owner: Sharon Beard) and Winslet by Wolkentanz
II/Lauries Crusador xx (owner: Parkwood
Stables). Twenty-three foals participated
in the foal show that was divided into
dressage and jumper oriented foals. A Balou
du Rouet/Rio Grande son (owner: Leanne
Simchison, Puslinch) became the best jumper
oriented foal. Reserve champion was a
youngster by Clinton I/Foxhunter (owner:
Parkwood Stables). A foal by Sir Donnerhall/
Contendro I (exhibitor: Kathleen Richardson,
Kendal) took the lead in the division of dressage-oriented
foals followed by a filly by
Sport Breeding
Freestyle/Viva Voltaire. The presentation of
the sire Fabregas by Florencio/De Niro was a
highlight. Inga Moeller presented him in a
masterly fashion. Immediately after that tribute
was paid to Fritz Floto who had been a
pioneer of the Hanoverian breed in Canada
and who had passed away just a few weeks
earlier. Inga Moeller and Fritz Floto’s son
Bernhard shared moving words.
The final site on the inspection tour was Southlane
Farm in Vankleek Hill, Ontario that is
owned by Louise and Joe Palmer. Twelve mares
participated in the performance test. Chablis
by Comte/Graf Top (breeder: Johannes
Otto, Wildeshausen; owner: Southlane Farm)
finished the test with the best scores. Her
predisposition for jumping was above average
in accordance with her pedigree; she
also convinced with her rideability and her
basic gaits. The Ia-prize was awarded six
times during the following mare show.
Champion mare and best Canadian bred
mare was Lucky Charm by Landkoenig/Genever.
Louise and Joe Palmer presented this
mare. A daughter of Sandro Hit (owner: Ellen
King, Hudson, Quebec) and test winner Chablis
followed Lucky Charm.
The foals were also divided into foals with
jumper orientation and foals with dressage
orientation on Southlane. A Fürstenball/Weltmeyer
son (owner/ exhibitor: Ferme de Lys)
won the group of foals with a dressage pedigree
in front of a filly by High Spirits/De Niro
(breeder/owner: Sandra Laprise, Alfred). A
colt by Totilas/Donnerhall (breeder/exhibitor:
Patricia Close, North Gower) followed in third
place. A filly by Providence/Simply Spruce
Meadows (owner/exhibitor: Southlane Farm)
took the lead followed by a colt by Sir Wanabi/Lacantus
(breeder/owner: Sandra Laprise)
in the group for foals with a jumper pedigree.
A colt by Levisonn/For Edition (owner: Ferme
Don Frederico
sets the bar
Whispers spread through the arena of Lower Saxony
as the secret was disclosed: Don Frederico is the
Stallion of the Year 2012.
A cer: Almost 3,000 guests celebrated the Hanoverian
Stallion of the Year 2012 during the licensing:
Don Frederico. The Hanoverian Association
together with the insurance company R+V/Vereinigte
Tierversicherung features an important Hanoverian
sire every year. The title has been awarded
21 times to date. Don Frederico is the 17th
state stud sire to receive this honor. Breeder Angelika
Westerhoff is delighted to receive an oil painting
from the artist Manfred Busemann and a considerable
check.
Angelika Westerhoff from Bleckede bred her mare
Cleopatra to the exceptional sire Donnerhall: Don
Frederico was born in 1997. He represents the dam
line of Schwanjungfrau which has produced foun-
dation sire Lanthan among others. Dam Cleopatra
descends from the Trakehner elite sire Consul and
has delivered a total of seven foals. Donnerhall
was the selected sire four times and Don Frederico
is the first-born out of the four. His one-year
younger sister Dark Lady became a broodmare.
Don Frederica was born in 1999. She became the
Reserve Hanoverian Riding Horse Championess in
2002. She won the bronze medal with rider Iris
Jonetat at the Hanoverian Riding Horse Championships
in Bremen as a four-year old. She won silver
at the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf a
short time later. She changed into the barn Grunder
in Switzerland after that and collected successes in
dressage classes up to the M-level. Don Frederica
had to be retired from competition because of an
injury in 2008. She has been a broodmare since
then. She delivered a foal by world champion Totilas
in 2011. Cleopatra’s youngest son by Donnerhall
is Don Camillo. He currently competes successfully
in dressage at the M-level with rider Yvonne
Vogt. Breeder Angelika Westerhoff remembers,
“Even as a foal Don Frederico was already curious,
anxious to learn and always attentive. He always
must be challenged.”
Best results
Family Nack raised Don Frederico in Bleckede. He
changed owners as a two-year old. Klaus Bünger
from Oetzen took him over. The athletic youngster
impressed the licensing committee and the guests
in the Niedersachsenhalle at his licensing in Verden
in 1999 and was proclaimed Champion Stallion.
The state stud from Lower Saxony bought the
Black athlete. Don Frederico impressed again at
the stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf finishing
second out of 45 participants and winning
the dressage index with 151,67 index points.
Obersattelmeister Ole Köhler rode him as a fiveyear
old in the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf
placing forth. The pair finished the final for six-year
olds in sixth place one year later. Don Frederico
was the first state stud sire to participate in the final
for the “Nürnberger Burgpokal“ in Frankfurt.
He won the introductory class. Today both rider
and horse are state employees and successfully
compete in dressage at the S-level. Ole Köhler was
awarded the golden riding badge based on the
successes with Don Frederico. The fifteen-year old
presented himself alert and alive during the award
ceremony in the Niedersachsenhalle in 2012. His
longtime rider knows about his qualities, “Don Frederico
is very willing to perform, enjoys the training
and is very intelligent. He may stand between
two mares in an award’s ceremony and behave
perfectly. But he is an alpha animal at home. He
does not like other stallions very much.” The rider
from Celle knows the strengths of the stallion all

too well, “He has an impressive radiance and he
wants to do everything right. It was usually me
who made a mistake, if we didn´t place in the
front.”
A guarantor for successful breeding
In 2009 the head of the breed at the Hanoverian
Association introduced the Grande-Prize. A Hanoverian
stallion with proven producer qualities between
ten and twelve years of age is awarded this
prize. The age is important because the first secured
results from a stallion’s performance as a producer
are available at that time. Don Frederico was
the first producer in history to receive this honorable
award. After all Don Frederico is not only a guarantor
for success in the sport but is especially a
guarantor for successful breeding. Federal champion
Dantonisius and reserve championess Dark
Carlotta – both out of dams by Weltmeyer – were
from his first vintage of youngsters. The current
shooting star by Don Frederico is the silver medal
winner at the Olympic Games in London called
Diva Royal with her rider Dorothee Schneider. The
dark bay mare was a participant at Verden’s elite
auction in the spring of 2006. The ten-year old became
Team European Champion for Young Riders
in 2010 with rider Stella Charlott Roth who is the
daughter of Diva Royal’s owner. Dorothee Schneider
has continued training the talented mare and
this year placed with her at the German Championships
in Balve and at the CHIO in Aachen and
reached her current career highlight at the Olympics.
Isabell Werth’s Grand Prix horse Don Johnson
FRH is also one of Don Frederico’s best. The bay
will most certainly earn his share of blue ribbons in
the international dressage arenas with almost the
same pedigree as Diva Royal (dam’s sire: Warkant).
Because of his outstanding potential the elevenyear
old gelding has carried the appendix FRH of
the Hanoverian Support Organization behind his
name since the International Dressage and Jumper
Festival in Verden 2012.
Ole Köhler has riden about 30 Don Frederico descendants
up to now and comments, “His children
are quite like him. They are ambitious and enjoy
the work.” State Stud manager Dr. Axel Brockmann
adds, “Don Frederico passes the walk, ability
to collect and basic gaits of high quality on to his
offspring. They have the spirit for big competitions.
That is the reason why professionals love them.”
Currently the Yearbook Stallions 2012 reflects 536
successful sport horse descendants for Don Frederico,
396 of them have collected ribbons in dressage
including 14 that successfully compete at the
S-level. The Hanoverian Association has licensed
25 of his sons including Don Darius (dam’s sire:
Markus Deak xx). The typy bay won the silver me-
dal in the division for four-year old riding horses
with his rider Mike Habermann at the Bundeschampionate
in Warendorf in 2011. The pair won
the bronze medal in the dressage ring in Warendorf
this year. Dramatic (dam’s sire: Weltmeyer)
who was the World Champion of young dressage
horses in 2008 is of very special quality, too. The
gelding Don Corazon also carries the ideal gene
combination of Don Frederico x Weltmeyer. He
placed in S-level dressage classes as an eight-year
old with his rider Lena Waldmann. More than
2,500 descendants are registered with the Hanoverian
Association including 178 state’s premium
mares/candidates; 325 Hanoverians found new
homes through Verden’s auction program. You can
always rely on Don Frederico’s offspring: Don Frederik
(dam’s sire: Furioso II) sold as a four-year old
on Verden’s elite auction in the fall of 2006. Today
he successfully competes at the Grand Prix-level
with Ellen Schulten-Baumer. The outstanding and
top-selling horse at this particular auction was
Dundee (dam’s sire: Falkland). He found a new
home for Euro 320,000.00. Today the six-year old
successfully competes at the M-level with rider
Verena-Maria Hinze. With this array of masterly
achievements awarding Don Frederico the title Hanoverian
Stallion of the Year 2012 came as no surprise
to Dr. Axel Brockmann, “With two horses
nominated to participate at this year’s Olympic
games I had hopes that he would be awarded the
title this year!” Breeding manager Dr. Werner
Schade summarized, “We honor sires with this title
that produce offspring and compete in international
competitions. And this is Don Frederico’s excellent
attribute. He passes on very important attributes
like performance willingness and power to his
sons and daughters. He has raised the bar.” n
Breeder‘s portrait
Hanoverians -
no question!
Even though Dieter Kreyenhagen lives in the
countryside outside the city of Osnabrück breeding
Hanoverian horses is a tradition in his family,
“Breeding Hanoverian horses has never been in
question!”
By Jürgen Stroscher
12 The Hanoverian 12|2012
“Even my father-in-law when he was still alive did
not think much about Oldenburg horses,” the 59year
old entrepreneur from Ostercappeln recounts.
“Even today we bet on the bloodlines of Hanoverian
horses.” We certainly trust him to have a successful
horse breeding program in place. After all
he prepares 1,500 meals daily in his catering service
for pre-schools, schools and homes for senior
citizens. He also organizes large parties in his restaurant
and he leases fishing locations at his wellmaintained
lakes.
Dieter Kreyenhagen from Ostercappeln has bred
Hanoverian horses on his farm for decades with his
entire family. He receives a lot of support from his
daughters Maren (30) and Tina (35) but also from
his wife Heike (56) who voices her opinion when
suitable breeding stallions are selected. Son Nico
(33) is responsible for farming the land. Family
Kreyenhagen provide the horse operation with
their homegrown feed. It is beneficial to be solely
responsible for the horse feed and the bedding.
The daughters, who are proud moms today, accompanied
dad as young girls on those weekends
when he attended mare or foal shows to present
the Family Kreyenhagen breeding products. “And
that is the way it still is. It is just really enjoyable to
present mares and foals from your own breeding
program to the public. Or, if we have a colt with
potential, we accompany him to the licensing,”
Tina Kreyenhagen explains. The sisters also competed
in earlier days. They both had to give up their
hobby because of school- and job-related reasons.
Maren decided to join the team at the Hanoverian
Association in Verden after she had successfully
Dieter Kreyenhagen from Ostercappeln. Photo:
Stroscher
completed her studies in agriculture. After some
practical training she stayed on as an assistant to
managing director Dr. Werner Schade for four years.
Then she managed the department of the
“Landvolk” (country people) in the town of Bohmte.
Now she is back home and back in the family
business. Her responsibilities mainly revolve
around logistics. “In addition to the breeding program
the restaurant with its branch ‘meals on
wheels’ is very demanding. I cannot however imagine
a life without horses,” the young entrepreneur
explains.
“It does not matter what you do, you must enjoy it.
You will only succeed, if you remain calm and collected,”
so Dieter Kreyenhagen. Equipped with a
great organizational talent and with intuition the
boss of three business branches always maintains
his perspective. Horse breeding is not considered a
hobby. Ten broodmares are always covered at the
farm in Ostercappeln. “We do not spare any time,
effort or money with our breeding operation. It
must be profitable at the end of the day,” Dieter
Kreyenhagen explains the importance of the breeding
program. The mares and the youngsters enjoy
the spacious fields all year long. The farm has 35
hectares. The high demands on the own Hanoverian
breeding program increased again in1995
when they bought St. Pr. mare Antonia by Archipel/
Karon together with the now deceased father-inlaw
Heinrich Terkhorn. “Antonia was the best foal
in Ankum; my father-in-law thought very highly of
her,” Dieter Kreyenhagen remembers. The importance
of the breeding program increased steadily

on the farm after having to give up the fattening of
bulls because of an epidemic (BSE-crisis). “We
were fortunate. So far Antonia has delivered six
fillies with great potential. We have been able to
build up our own damline. Currently she has a foal
by Fürst Nymphenburg at her side.” Antonia’s dam
was offered to Family Kreyenhagen one year later.
The then eight-year old mare Koralle by Karon moved
into the breeder’s barn in Ostercappeln. Koralle
was in foal to Metternich and also delivered a
filly called Mette. In 1997 one-year old Adda by
Archipel/Wortschatz joined the broodmare band in
a horse exchange. The foundation for an exceptional
Hanoverian breeding program with dressage
lines was laid.
Foundation dam Antonia has created quite a stir
over the past years especially with her female offspring
on regional but also on federal shows. In
2009 the breeding barn Kreyenhagen had the
most successful Champion Family of the area Osnabrück/Emsland
at the Herwart von der Decken-
Show in Verden. All three daughters out of one
dam received the Ib-prize. This was even more noteworthy
as the three sisters were by three different
sires. Waroness by Weltmeyer was born in
2001, Laree is by Londonderry and is one-year older
and Waikiki by Wolkentanz was born in 2006.
Waroness received a Ic-prize in the individual competition.
Show-successful mares
These four mares stood out again at the first Friedrich-Jahncke-Show
in Isterberg in 2010. Laree was
selected the best mare in the individual competition
in the class for seven-to-nine-year olds. St. Pr.
mare Antonia advanced with her three daughters
by Weltmeyer, Londonderry and Wolkentanz to become
an Elite Family the same year. All three
daughters received the state’s premium award. The
mares impress with their enormous natural impulsion
and with large-framed riding horse parts.
“They have to convince with strong type and expression.
They must exhibit lofty movement as
dressage horses. Rideability is of utmost importance;
only then can they develop their abilities
under saddle, too.” Dieter Kreyenhagen was able
to reach these breeding goals quite often; for instance
with La Valetta who was born 2001. He
bred the mare Adda to Londonderry that was an
especially promising decision. La Valetta qualified
for the Bundeschampionate in 2005, sold through
Verden’s auction program and successfully competes
at the S-level today. So far seven riding horses
and six foals have been successfully sold through
Verden’s auction program. If you are that successful
it comes to no surprise that Maren, Tina and
father Dieter gladly invest the little time they have
into the breeding of Hanoverians. “It is always so
exciting when foals are to be born and the question
arises what the result may be,” daughter
Maren’s enthusiasm does not slow down. Dieter
Kreyenhagen lays the foundation for the stallion
selection with his now legendary slip of paper. He
documents his thoughts on this slip of paper that
he has had throughout the year while attending
stallion performance tests, mare and foal shows,
auctions and while visiting with breeders that are
also friends. A collection of possible producers is
created. In the end the family gets together and
makes the final decision for the next foal vintage.
“I only use stallions that I have personally examined.
Then I am able to evaluate whether a producer
is generally suitable and also for which specific
mare. In the past years we have been loyal to the
State Stud Celle almost 100 percent of the time,”
Dieter Kreyenhagen explains. “Again and again I
hear that Weltmeyer’s descendants are difficult. I
have not experienced this and the demand for
Weltmeyer offspring is still high. A Don Crusador
for instance should not be missing in any pedigree.”
The list of stallions prefered by Family Kreyenhagen
is long: Londonderry, Don Frederico, Fürst
Nymphenburg, Dancier, Wolkentanz, Weltmeyer,
Rotspon and Spörcken. But young and promising
producers like Don Index or Floriscount are also of
interest. “The walk has top priority. This gait must
be correct in dressage horses. You must like the
horses, too; they should be elegant and easy to
handle.” Dieter Kreyenhagen just followed his instincts
this year when the decision which stallion to
use for his mare Waikiki had to be made. Despite
all his previous breeding successes, breeding his
broodmares to exceptional stallions is still at the
top of Dieter Kreyenhagen’s wish list. n
High demand for
Cross-country
The WBFSH-evaluation has opened up. Now more
than one breed association dominates the
disciplines of dressage, jumping and eventing.
Hanover’s results are noteworthy: two second and
one seventh place.
By Britta Züngel
Every year the World Breeding Federation for
Sporthorses collects competition results from
all over the world. The results from horse shows
that took place from October 1st through September
30th are entered in the statistics. Different
shows are weighed differently. Who gets how
many points depends on the FEI-World ranking for
riders and the classification of the event. These
special points are added for the Olympic Games.
Five Olympic Competitors
All six horses that made the KWPN the breed association
with the highest points in the dressage rating
competed in London. Valegro and Parzival
earned individual gold and silver. Hanover maintained
second place with five Olympic competitors
and five names beginning with D. Desperados FRH
with rider Kristina Sprehe is the sensational rising
star of the season. Last year he placed 229 th in the
ranking and now the beautiful Black has climbed
up the ladder within the shortest period of time
finishing as the world’s fifth best dressage horse.
Diva Royal has experienced a similar fate. In 2011
her name did not appear on any list but then she
became one of the pillars of the German team with
rider Dorothee Schneider. This pairs success story
will not continue, though. Stalla Charlott Roth who
is the daughter of Diva Royal’s owner will ride and
compete the mare again. First-rate Hanoverians
entered international competition almost seamlessly.
They step into the tracks of such laudable
horses like Gigolo FRH, Satchmo, Salinero and Bonaparte.
Westphalia finished third in the breeding
book rating. The Westphalian breed also relies
strongly on the D-blood in the pedigrees.
Hanover also took second place in eventing just as
it did in dressage. The Irish took the lead; Holstein
followed in third place with a considerable gap.
The French who were in the lead last year dropped
down to forth place. Riders from Australia and
New Zealand who used to ride horses from their
own breeding programs now ride Hanoverians
which has contributed considerably to the high value
estimation Hanoverian event horses enjoy
worldwide. NZB Campino helped eventing legend
Mark Todd to win the bronze medal with his team
in London. The pair was in third place after dressage
and cross-country and close to creating the
sensation of winning an individual medal as well!
One of the youngest eventers is the best: FRH
Butts Avedon - at just nine years of age – is already
a championship horse in the barn of Andreas
Dibowski and number three worldwide. FRH Escada
JS, Ingrid Klimke’s great hopeful for the future,
placed 34th in the ranking of the WBFSH at just
eight years of age.
The horses from Holstein reconquered the top position
in the division for jumpers followed by the
KWPN and the Selle Francais. Hanover as the second
best German breed association took the sixth
position. Embassy II and Codex One are two young
jumper horse acrobats that are at the very beginning
of their international career and that already
belong to the best in this discipline. Codex One
was the first choice for the Olympic Games and has
impressed with placings in the indoor show season
that has just started. One horse in particular created
quite a sensation during the past show season:
Embassy II won The Grand Prix of Munich, the
Grand Prix of Bayschweig and the Grand Prix of
Crans Montana with his rider Hans-Dieter Dreher.
Since then the forty-year old rider has been considered
to be the shooting star of the German jumper
scene. 10-year old Ahorn van de Zuuthoeve
appeared almost unnoticed in the group of the top
ten. Henry Turrell from Great Britain developed the
horse and introduced him to competitions before
he came to the barn of Richie Moloney who is an
Irishman who lives in the United States. The pair
has been very successful. They were members of
the winning Irish Nation Prize team in Dublin and
in Hickstead. n

The fact that two successors are taken on
for one renowned predecessor invites to
say phrases like twice as good or pas de
deux. All these wordings do not touch the
root of the succession of Friedrich-Wilhelm
Isernhagen as auctioneer of the Hanoverian
Association. After an era of 37-years something
new and something different has
begun. It is in the nature of things. The successors
are Daniel Delius and Bernd Hickert.
Why two? The answer is simple and obvious:
Miraculously Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen
never had to pull out for whatever reason.
With the increase of events however the Hanoverian
Association must cover against such
a possibility with a second auctioneer. That is
one reason! The ever-growing size of the
collection took the predecessor almost to
complete exhaustion. That is no longer necessary.
There are two experts ready to share
the task with two successors. The collection
of horses is divided into four quarters; after
each the auctioneer changes. The actual
number of participants is irrelevant. This will
not only preserve each auctioneer. The different
style will break up any monotony. At this
point I would like to point out that we plan to
maintain the number of horses, the size of
the collection and the number of events. It
will be good and the right thing to do to have
two responsible parties on the podium. No
matter if one or two auctioneers one thing
will not change in respect to the auctions in
Verden and Alsfeld as well as the regional
auctions of the various breeding clubs:
Verden’s renowned style will be maintained!
The two new gentlemen were recruited under
the premise to address the audience in
an objective and serious manner. Our customers
have always appreciated to be
addressed in such a way and we honor this
appreciation.
Improving buyers’ services
With the new concept we also implemented
moving the location of the auctioneers away
from the entrance. The reason for this is the
desire to improve buyers’ services. The location
and positioning of the auctioneer’s podium
in the arena of the Niedersachsenhalle
has caused for confusion more than once in
the past. Light conditions and visibility demanded
moving the auction activities to the
other short side to blocks 13 and 14. An improved
overview and better customer contact
are now guaranteed. Both auctioneers
will address foreign customers in French or
English if warranted. This will make the interaction
and communication with customers
even better. A change has been implemented
regarding the communication with exhibitors
and clients, too: From now on Konrad
Böth, member of the board, will conduct the
conversations with exhibitors to allow the
auctioneers to be able to devote more time
to the customers before the auction. The two
new auctioneers start a new era without al-
Here is a bit more information about the two
new ones on the block: Bernd Hickert is 34
years old. Daniel Delius who a very experienced
auctioneer was deliberately placed at
events; for instance at the free-jumping competitions,
horse shows and foal championships.
He is a co-organizer of the Hanoverian
foal auction in Langenau, a member of the
selection committee and he has been an auction
assistant many times. He or better his
voice is well known from the Gala Evenings
in Verden. Bernd Hickert has managed a
breeding operation together with his father
for more than 25 years. Daniel Delius is a
journalist and a commentator. He has held
his auctioneer license for more than 20 years.
He was the main reporter at the news agency
‘sport-informations-dienst’ (SID), commentated
on numerous Olympic Games, Soccer
World Championships as well as European
and World Championships in other sport disciplines.
He is a specialist and an expert on
Thoroughbred breeding. Daniel Delius is an
expert author. He has been the auctioneer of
racehorses and trotters in Baden-Baden, Berlin,
Gelsenkirchen, Munich, Recklinghausen
and Quenhorn since 1989. He has been an
independent journalist for print media, radio
has stood in front of the camera for ARD,
SAT1 and n-tv (German TV stations) and has
Auction
A positve part
of life
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen was the auctioneer for
the Hanoverian Association for 37 years. In an
interview he talks about his beginnings, his own
style and his retirement.
22 The Hanoverian 12|2012
THE HANOVERIAN: Your career began with a
glimpse at the Black board of the High Agricultural
School in Celle. Alfred Brüns who
owned an auction office and who was the
auctioneer guru of his time was looking for
an assistant. How does the story continue?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “Alfred Brüns was a
personality and the auctioneer for all renowned
horse breeding associations. The offer enticed me
as I have always been interested in horses and
cattle. I contacted him and we decided that I would
start working for him after having successfully
completed my studies. That happened on October
1 st , 1966. Only three days later he placed an auction
hammer into my hands and entrusted me with
conducting my first auction on my own authority. I
auctioned off fifty Angler pigs in Neumuenster. I
was only 23 years old and it was a true challenge.
I successfully completed my job and my demand as
auctioneer grew steadily.”
THE HANOVERIAN: But he did not entrust to
you with the horses.
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “Correct. Alfred
Brüns was an artist; he celebrated every auction.
Sometimes one had the impression that visitors
attended the auction not just because of the horses
but also to witness Mr. Brüns. I conducted
countless cattle, pig and farm auctions in Germany
for the Office Brüns over the next seven years. I
gained experience and developed my own – maybe
a bit more temperate - style. I spent many
weekends on the road as a horse show commentator
which was very helpful to me as it gave me a
chance to intensify my contact to horses and to the
sport of riding. The long-term plan was for me to
become Alfred Brüns’ successor and to take over
his office. I decided to accept an offer with a cattle
association in Hanover after he had not provided
me with a concrete plan in 1974.”
THE HANOVERIAN: You are Alfred Brüns successor
with the Hanoverian association after
all. In 1975 you conducted the first foal
auction. You were the permanent auctioneer
from the fall elite auction of the same
year onwards. Are there differences between
auctioning off horses and cattle?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “Yes. With cattle foremost
profitability determines the price. Pedigree
and exterior have some influence. During my 40year
long job as auctioneer that adds up to standing
on the auction block for about 1-½ years I
sold about 450,000 cattle. I would have never
have had enough time to familiarize myself with
each individual animal. It is more complicated with
horses.
I have auctioned off about 25,000 horses and saw
each one at least once before the auction for instance
during the photo-shoot or during the training.
The customers value and honor it, if you are
believable when you offer the horses for sale and
when you are able to highlight good qualities. The

amount of factors that influence and determine a
sale is much higher with horses than with cattle.
Colors, sex, pedigrees and riding characteristics
are subject to personal taste and preferences and
are hard to grasp. I think that emotions and desires
determine up to fifty percent of the sale price.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How have the auctions
changed during the past decades?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “37 years ago there
were two elite auctions in Verden with between150
and 200 horses over two days. At some
point we realized that it was almost impossible to
do justice to each horse and to each buyer with
this number of horses. The idea came up to introduce
the so-called interim auctions during winter
and summer. The breeders were rather skeptical.
The sale successes quickly set in and a May and
November auction were added, too. The overall
quality of the horses has improved. The prices increased
and so did the buyers demands – also in
respect to the importance of the veterinarian examination
that is not always comprehensible.
Unfortunately the increase of the prices is not proportionate
to the rising costs for the breeders. The
result is that especially the number of agricultural
breeders is getting smaller and smaller even
though they used to be the foundation of the Hanoverian
Association. Fortunately the Hanoverian
Association did not just rely on the market within
Germany but formed alliances first within Europe,
then in the United States and now worldwide. After
all many auctions would not have taken a successful
course without sales to foreign countries.
The auctions are not just a price barometer for the
trade within Germany. They give positive impulses
to breeders. Contacts are created on auctions that
lead to other sales. This is a good thing and should
not be forgotten.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Were you nervous before
every auction or did the experience win at
some point?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “I was a little nervous
before every auction. If I had not been, I
would have been in the wrong profession. It was
always my goal to sell as many horses as possible
with the premise that both parties – buyers and
sellers – were content at the end of the day. These
are the cornerstones of an auction: sale, happiness
and, at best, positive feedback. The sale of
Lemony’s Nicket was certainly a career highlight
but I was overjoyed about the course the 2011
winter auction took. We achieved a sale’s quota of
100 percent that - according to my knowledge -
has never happened at any auction in the world.”
THE HANOVERIAN: Do you have advice to
offer to your successors?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “It was a difference
like day and night when I followed Alfred Brüns. He
wore a cut and a monocle more like a circus director
and I was just 30 years old with long blond hair
being temperate and businesslike. The audience
and the buyers accepted the change much faster
than I had anticipated. Do not try to copy a style
but be faithful to and confident in yourself. For me
it meant straightforwardness, honesty and trustworthiness.
I wish Bernd Hickert and Daniel Delius
a similar transition. May they quickly gain the trust
of exhibitors and customers!”
THE HANOVERIAN: How will you enjoy your
retirement?
Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen, “The festive farewell
in the Niedersachsenhalle was very moving.
The auctions were the essence of my life. I was a
part of a big family in which I felt accepted. I always
considered my work to be a positive part of
my life. Now I am turning the page to a different
chapter. I shall ask my wife Gudrun to share the
secrets of our household with me. My daughters
will explain the Internet to me in detail over the
winter months. I will continue to play sports. I
greatly enjoy playing tennis twice a week and visit
a fitness studio regularly with my wife. I also enjoy
card games. Auctions will always be a part of my
life and I plan to spend many hours in the Niedersachsenhalle.”
Verden’s November auction is a traditional sales
event that was established in 1994 by former
auction manager Rainer Kiel. It has proven to
be a success. Riding horses that follow the elite
auction participants in quality are sold on such an
interim auction. These sales events present a good
opportunity to recreational riders as well as riders
with horse show ambitions to purchase good and
solid horses. The collections on the interim auctions,
i.e. the winter, May, summer and November
auctions as well as the Alsfeld Advent differ from
the elite auction collection not so much in quality
but more so in the training and development of the
participating horses.
The November auction was the third event in
Verden’s fall. After the 127th elite auction and the
stallion market the collection of the November
auction included horses for ambitious competitors
and for recreational riders. It was a colorful mixture
including 63 dressage aspirants and 30 jumper
horses. In addition to their predisposition for dressage
or jumping six riding horses were also earmarked
for their suitability as recreational horses.
93 riding horses were in the auction catalog but
only 78 horses were offered for sale in the end.
Auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener summarizes,
“We are sad that less horses were offered for
sale. The share of dropouts was high by comparison.”
The health of each individual horse has top
priority during the training’s period. Every morning
a vet-check takes place where auction manager
Wegener and veterinarian Dr. Reimann obtain an
overview over the health condition of the riding
horses. Renowned trainer Hans-Heinrich Meyer zu
Strohen supervises the warm-up training of all horses.
Gentle and horse-friendly training is of utmost
importance to him. Looking into the warm-up arena
you can witness long walk phases and the classical
forward-downward training method that the
young auction horses need during this training
phase. To avoid putting too much strain on auction
horses that are high in demand by customers, a limit
is placed on his tryout times or the horse may
not be tried at all any more. Customer advisor
Jeanine Pagel will then explain the situation to interested
customers and cancel the tryout.
Awaiting innovations with excitement
The auction day was awaited with excitement and
two innovations were implemented. The new team
of auctioneers Daniel Delius and Bernd Hickert
succeeded the legendary auctioneer Friedrich-Wilhelm
Isernhagen who watched an auction from
the grand stand for the first time. He was amidst

his family. Daniel Delius assumed the sale of
the first and the third quarter; his colleague
Hickert sold the second and the forth quarter.
It was dead silent in the Niedersachsenhalle
when Delius welcomed the audience in Verden
and invited them to entertain bids for the
first horse in the ring. Everybody have to get
used to the new voice and also to the place
of the auctioneers. The short side, block 13
and 14, were modified to suit the auctioneers
and the officials. This innovation and the new
auctioneers were very well received by all
customers and guests. “The debut and the
initiation of Bernd Hickert and Daniel Delius
were a success. It is not easy to follow into
the footsteps of a legend. I am looking forward
to a good co-operation,” said Jörg-
Wilhelm Wegener.
Silence reigned in the arena. Everybody was
waiting for the one: Don Henry! He had head
number 49 and was not a secret for very
long. He became a popular dressage horse
long before the auction. The Don Henrico/
Fishermans Friend son (breeder: Gerhard
Slink, Grossheide) impressed with three exceptionally
good basic gaits and obvious rideability.
His presence, his push-off and his
impressive charm were hard to beat. Several
visitors and prospective buyers fell in love
with this dressage youngster. His popularity
was reflected in the speed of the bidding.
Two parties remained interested once the
bidding passed the 30,000 Euro-mark. Clearly
enjoying the thrill regular customers from
Switzerland held out the longest. Don Henry
found a new home at 50,000.00 Euros. “Don
Henry is a superb horse! We just had to have
him!” Don Henry will remain with Anna-Sophie
Fiebelkorn for training just like other
former auction horses do that belong to the
couple from Switzerland. Prinz Paul by Perigueux/Escudo
(breeder/exhibitor: Hans-Joachim
Bruns, Isernhagen) was the highest priced
jumper horse at this auction. A regular
customer from Lower Saxony whose family
has invested in Verden’s auction horses for
three generations bought the jumper specialist.
St. Pr. aspirant Wincentina by Weltmeyer/
Brentano II (breeder/exhibitor: Dagmar Meyer,
Edemissen) was the top riding horse seller
with recreational attributes. The beautiful
mare sold for 17,000.00 Euros.
The share of exports was high; this was very
encouraging. Twelve Hanoverians sold to
France and buyers from Finland invested in
six Hanoverian youngsters. Customers from
Japan, Uzbekistan, Novosibirsk and Indonesia
were on the list of buyers, too. Salmour by
Soliman de Hus/Matcho AA (breeder/exhibitor:
Rolf Steinke, Bomlitz) will travel the furthest
to reach his new home; he will go to
the Golden Coast in Australia. His new owner
is a regular customer here in Verden and is a
Grand Prix-rider and a member of the Australian
daughter association. The three-year old
sold for 17,000.00 Euros. n
