Henderson’s resident Song Sparrow who ‘owns’ the parking lot. His territorial protective behaviour includes fighting all the other Song Sparrows that show up in the rear view mirrors of cars in the lot. Breakfast for Learning… Help Wanted The Breakfast for Learning program is looking for a few volunteers to even out the workload. This fabulous program feeds many students in the morning helping them start their days in the right frame of mind to foster learning and achievement. The coordinator is looking for a volunteer that can help one morning a week for approximately one hour. Please contact Mr. Fisher at the school. Haunted House A huge thank you to Darren Nivens who stepped up to take over the PAC’s main fundraiser The Henderson Haunted House. It looked like this money maker would go the way of cheap gasoline, but Mr. Nivens stepped up and successfully kept it going, energizing it with some new ideas. Mr. Nivens and his ghoulish band of volunteers did a great job of scaring people and bringing in money that is used to fund programs and activities for students here at Henderson. Terry Fox Run A big thanks to all who volunteered and helped out with our Terry Fox run, also a huge thank you to Mitchell Brothers and Quality Foods for their generous support of our post run lunch. Terry had a goal to raise a dollar for each person in Canada. At Henderson we raised over 10 dollars for each student at the school. Terry would be very proud of Henderson. Thank you for your generous support. School painting-Henderson’s inside will be getting a bit of a facelift over the next few months as the school district paints our gym and hallways. Please excuse the inconvenience this may cause, but the painting will not occur during instructional time and will sure brighten up our school. COUNSELLOR’S CORNER SLEEP……..How Important is it? Adequate sleep is a major factor in your child’s success. A child who gets adequate sleep is more alert, better able to learn, less accident prone, and more cheerful. Children with parents who regulate bedtimes and enforce routine sleeping patterns (EVEN ON THE WEEKENDS) do better academically. Unlike adults who become sleepy with inadequate rest, children that do not get enough sleep or have erratic sleeping patterns often appear hyperactive or “wired”. Chronically tired kids can be impulsive, with emotions swinging from one extreme to another. This may manifest as attention deficits or hyperactivity. In addition, there may be emotional outbursts such as aggression, crying and inappropriate behaviours. Six year olds need about 11 hours of sleep. This decreases to about 9 or 10 hours by the time they turn 12. Glynis Romanica, SD 47 School Counsellor We Want Wool & Yearn for Yarn! Do you have any spare balls of wool we could use for arts and crafts? Please put them in the box under the table outside the office. Thank you! Recycling Our recycling team is up and running and doing a great job of cutting down waste here at Henderson. Each week they collect paper, plastic, cardboard and metal for recycling. We also collect all juice boxes and plastic refundable bottles to be returned with funds going to the Div. 1 field trip fund. We are always looking volunteers to help us deliver these containers to the recycling depot. If you can, please contact Ms. Leigh or Mr. Fisher. November 6, 2012 3
