A Learning Experience
I’ve learned a great deal about our communities, since starting my job with The Learning
Foundation. I had thought, that I had a very real perspective on what made Hastings and
Prince Edward Counties great, and unique, and on the issues with which we struggle. I
belong to, or have belonged to, a number of community organizations and it’s through those
associations, and my social network that my opinions and impressions have been formed.
I’ve not lived in social housing; I haven’t had to worry about having sufficient food for my
children, and as a ‘farm family’, I have a very supportive network that lives beside, and
directly across the road from me.
As both Kellie and Marg note in their comments, the creation of the Student Emergency
Fund, and the Food for Learning programs, have brought to my attention the situations in
which a significant number of our families find themselves living. ‘Rural poverty’, and the
‘working poor’ are two terms of which I’ve become very aware. Your financial support of
these two funds is allowing us to positively impact, and make a difference, in the lives of
our students.
Our fundraising efforts have also made possible the Quinte Regional Science and Technology
Fair, and the Project Enhancement Fund. Our local Science Fair has attracted students that
have gone on to win the top awards at the Canada Wide event. Our students are the ‘cream
of the crop’ (farm humour), at the Canada Wide Science Fair. We’re one of the smallest
fairs, yet we continue to provide the strongest and best competitors at the national level!
Through the Project Enhancement Fund we’ve made possible the offering of unique student
programs, that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. As I sit down to review this year’s requests,
the innovative program suggestions being proposed by Hastings and Prince Edward District
School Board staff is inspiring. Completing a Project Enhancement Fund grant application
takes time, and energy, so it’s evident that we have caring and respectful staff members, that
believe in success for all students.
In closing, I just want to reiterate that my work with The Learning Foundation has provided
me with a very real educational opportunity. Through our fundraising efforts, we’re providing
an entire spectrum of programs and initiatives that address many different student needs.
And, while I wish that we could do more, I’m confident that we’re making a difference.
The Learning Foundation from
a newcomer 's point of view...
I have been working in The Learning Foundation for just over a
year, and it truly has been a learning experience. I have worked
in school settings for most of my twenty-seven year career and
was not aware of the existence of The Learning Foundation.
I became aware of the funding available to students in need just
before I began working in the Learning Foundation office. I knew
that the schools received funding for school nutrition programs,
assuming it came from the Board of Education. I did not know
that The Learning Foundation was a separate entity housed at
the Education Centre.
At the school where I worked, we had a student in need of
medical treatment, which the parent could not afford. I found
out that the school could apply to the Student Emergency Fund
to help with these costs. This is when I became aware of the
Learning Foundation and its vision of providing opportunities
for all students to be successful. I was impressed how quickly
our request was processed and that we actually had a venue to
help students in need.
After coming to work in the Learning Foundation, I was able
to pass along my new found knowledge to my peers in school
offices who I knew were looking for ways to help students in
need. Many of my peers welcomed this information, since they
also were not aware of The Learning Foundation and the role it
plays in helping the students of the Hastings and Prince Edward
District School Board. I was, with the support of Maribeth, able
to put together a package for all school principals to share with
their staff to educate them in the vision and mission of The
Learning Foundation.
I believe that we play an important role, as we believe that all
children deserve to have the same opportunities. I know that
most schools will endeavour to support their students as best
they can, but funds are not always available. Having the support
of The Learning Foundation, whether for nutrition programs,
sports equipment, or monetary assistance for students in need
means that we are fulfilling an important role and the responses
received for our support speaks for itself.
What the Learning Foundation does is extremely important,
especially in these economic times. Knowing that I can contribute
to the Foundation along with many generous people in our local
communities to help students in need, makes me feel good about
where I work.
The Importance of these Programs!
Working with The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning
Foundation has provided me with an unexpected education.
When my family moved to the area nine years ago, I didn’t know
what to expect. Getting to know the community has opened my
eyes to the various situations children and their families are living
with, and the resilience they have to continue moving forward.
It is astonishing how much food is purchased, and served to
children and youth, through our Food for Learning programs
each year. Acknowledging that children do not have access
to enough healthy food was the first step, because we don’t
always ‘see’ hunger. We now provide food, at school, to over
11,000 students every year. We know that children cannot learn
effectively if they are hungry, and that their hunger may also
impact their behaviour, social interactions and even attendance
at a school. Food for Learning programs are there to provide
nourishment to any student, so that they can all reach their full
potential.
The Student Emergency Fund is also a program of the Learning
Foundation and is in place to help level the playing field for local
students and ensure that they can participate fully in everything
their school has to offer. Through the Student Emergency Fund,
immediate basic needs are met, food at home, clothing, glasses,
medication and much more. Also through the Student Emergency
Fund, the Learning Foundation continuously collects personal
hygiene products for high school students – everything from
soap, shampoo, and deodorant to laundry detergent and feminine
hygiene products. I have learned that once people in our area are
aware of the needs, they are eager to help. For example, I shared
this need with the members of my sorority chapter of Beta Sigma
Phi in Trenton. Realizing that local students were going without
some of these everyday items really touched their hearts. These
ladies are very generous and cannot bear to think that young
people in our community do not have access to some of these
items that most of us take for granted. For the past three years
we have collected an impressive amount of various personal
hygiene products and donated them to Trenton High School.
Last year, a second chapter heard about what we were doing
and they too wanted to help so they collected items for Bayside
Secondary School. On a regular basis Beta Sigma Phi members
will approach me and ask – What do the schools need this year?,
my answer is usually ‘Everything’. This year, both chapters will
continue to support this worthy cause.
I have learned many things from The Learning Foundation:
• Many local children are living without and this impacts their
self esteem.
• There is a distinct difference between rural and urban poverty.
• In our rural area there is a great deal of pride associated with
caring for our families and asking for help is difficult.
• There is a gap between what is really happening in our
community and the general awareness of that reality.
• Members of our community are generous and eager to help
• The Learning Foundation’s programs are making a difference.
It is a pleasure to work with The Learning Foundation – every
day we help students and every day I count my blessings.
Kellie Brace
Student Nutrition Program Coordinator
Food for Learning programs continue to thrive in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. Through our breakfast, snack and lunch
programs, students can access healthy food throughout the school day. Every day, the staff in our local schools experience the
benefits of having their students receive the nutrition they need to learn – they see behaviour improve, positive social interactions,
increased self esteem…. and lots of smiles!
Last school year, 2010-2011, Food for Learning:
• Helped to support 151 breakfast, snack and lunch programs
• Provided 691,588 meals and snacks
• Involved 79 Schools and alternative education sites
• Had 11,624 students participate
• Is grateful to the 979 volunteers who gave 23,365 hours of their time to make it all possible
2011 Holiday Appeal
Dear Friend,
On behalf of the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, it is our hope that you will once again consider
making a financial contribution that will positively impact students in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. The Hastings
and Prince Edward Learning Foundation exists to provide enhanced educational opportunities that will encourage and
enthuse students in their studies. Our students are tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, doctors and skilled labourers. If you have
not yet had the opportunity to sponsor our projects this year, your continued support will allow us to offer the following
assistance and enhancements towards students’ learning opportunities.:
Project
Enhancement
Fund
Our Project Enhancement Fund was created to encourage school staff members
to submit applications for funding of projects that provide innovative, unique and
exciting enhancements to curriculum requirements. Projects must:
• enhance educational opportunities for students,
• support an initiative in Healthy Active Living, the Arts or Innovative Practices.
In 2010-11 Food for Learning programs served 691,588 meals and snacks to 11,624 students in
schools from the Catholic, Public, Mohawk and French School boards in Hastings and Prince
Edward Counties. Food for Learning assists schools with the organization and funding of nutrition
programs that feed hungry students. Children who are well nourished are more likely to:
• attend school • be able to concentrate
• have high energy levels • have higher self esteem and
• be interested, active and participate • have better developed social skills.
QUINTE REGIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR
This year we celebrate the 53rd year of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology
Fair. The fair remains as the Quinte area’s premier event to celebrate and encourage
student achievement in science and technology. During the fair over 300 students from
grades 4 to 12 gather to display their academic achievements to the general public and
be judged against their peers for the opportunity to represent the Quinte Region at the
Canada-wide Science Fair.
Len & Olive Black
Memorial Fund
The Len & Olive Black Memorial Fund’ supports students facing financial hardship, and
who:
• Require assistance with purchasing materials and items to allow them to fully participate
in courses, leveling the playing field for all students (i.e. specialized welding glasses for
technical courses, character shoes for music theatre courses, suitable shorts and shoes for
gym classes, art kits for art classes, etc)
• Would like to pursue post secondary education and need assistance with the application fee.
The purpose of the Student Emergency Fund is to quietly provide immediate assistance to
students in crisis. This funding could be used to purchase items such as eyeglasses, Epi-Pens,
medical supplies, food and clothing, transportation, field trip subsidies and for other financial
needs that result from family emergencies (e.g., fire, flood, layoffs, illness, etc). During the
2010-2011 school year, 208 requests for emergency funds were received and granted.
Working
Together
Through funding provided from The Hastings and Prince Edward
Learning Foundation’s Food for Learning program, the Hastings
County Housing Programs Branch has been be able to deliver the widely
growing “Food to Go” Program.
Throughout the summer months, the Food to Go Program provides a
healthy snack to children and youth living in social housing.
The Hastings County Housing Programs Branch administers Backyard
Bonanza, a summer day camp program available, free of charge,
to children living in social housing family neighbourhoods. This
increasingly popular summer program was started 6 years ago as a
pilot program in Belleville. In 2011, the Branch offered the program in
10 different social housing neighbourhoods in Belleville and Trenton.
The largest portion of the Food to Go snacks are delivered through the
Backyard Bonanza program, but the food program also provides an
opportunity for a healthy snack to all children and youth living in social
housing.
Congratulations to our 2011 Project
Enhancement Grant Winners
The Directors of The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation are pleased to announce the 2011/12 winning Project
Enhancement Fund grant applicants.
New this year was an additional $5,000 Project Enhancement Fund grant to award, for a total of two at this level, as well as four,
$2,500 awards, and these were in addition to the ten, $1,000 awards.
The purpose of the Project Enhancement Fund is to encourage school staff to submit applications that offer innovative, unique and
exciting enhancements to curriculum requirements. In order to have a project considered it must:
1) Enhance educational opportunities for students, and
2) Support an initiative in Healthy Active Living, the Arts or Innovative Practices.
The two $5,000 grants are being awarded to:
1) Prince Edward Collegiate staff for their application, ‘Aboriginal Awareness Day’
2) and to the staff at Quinte Secondary School for their, ‘Anti-bullying/Self Esteem Leadership Symposium’.
Prince Edward Collegiate Institute Principal, Shelley MacKenzie-Coates, and Aboriginal Studies Teacher, Erin McFaul, described
their project as, “The PECI Aboriginal Awareness Day would be a day to promote awareness of local Aboriginal Communities as
well as celebrate the diversity and contributions of Canada’s First Nation, Inuit and Metis cultures. A variety of elders and guest
speakers from Aboriginal communities and organizations would be invited to deliver workshops for our students. This would be
a full day event during which students would participate in a minimum of four workshops. Students enrolled in the Aboriginal
Studies classes would also deliver presentations and display their work to share what they have learned in their courses throughout
the semester.”
Lisa Vincent, Principal at Quinte Secondary School, and teacher Maren Edgett, wrote about their event, “The QSS Anti-bullying/Self
Esteem Leadership Symposium would be a one day event run in conjunction with the organization, “Me to We” for 300 participants.
Thirty five student delegates representing diverse pathways and all grades, from each of the HPEDSB secondary schools would
attend this day. The event would start with a key-note speaker before students would participate in the four break-out sessions. At the
end of the day students would make a plan as to how the information will be used back at their home school and feeder schools. Our
collective vision is for this significant event to send strong messages, to provide capacity for school teams, and to have a lasting and
measurable effect in the lives of our students. “
The following $2,500 applications were also approved for a grant:
1) ‘All I’s on Learning’-Prince of Wales, Sir John A. MacDonald, Stirling Senior P.S.
THS Track Quest:
Major Funding Announcement
On October 4th, the THS Track Quest project received a major
funding boost from both the City of Quinte West and the family
of Doug Whitley & Whitley Insurance. These are key donations
that will bring the fundraising phase that much closer to the goal
of raising $500,000.
THS TRACK QUEST is a community based initiative geared towards rebuilding the track
and field complex at Trenton High School. The Quinte West community and students
will be provided with a first class, modern track as a result of this ambitious community
project. Track Quest is spearheaded by the Trenton High School Alumni Association,
working in conjunction with its partners: the City of Quinte West, the Hastings and Prince
Edward District School Board, and The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation
(HPELF).
“Together, the Partners are seeing this endeavor through to the finish-line, states Campaign
Co-Chair Duncan Armstrong. The Alumni Association has worked tirelessly over the
past six months raising funds. They’ve sent out a community mailer, conducted on-line
campaigns, requested significant major donations, and organized a golf tournament.”
For the family of Doug Whitley, the significant
donation that was presented is a gift in memory of
their father. “Our dad felt a personal commitment
to the success of this project, and our gift is
a tribute to him. He was one of the first people
to endorse and commit to making a new track a
reality”, states son Paul Whitley.
Mayor Williams presented a cheque for
$150,000, representing the funds pledged by
Quinte West Council towards the project, at
the October 4th event. Mayor Williams has
noted that, “Council chose to support THS
Track Quest as students, their families and
community residents will all benefit from a
refurbished, modern track facility. It’s truly a
community resource.”
Paul Whitley who is also the Track Quest
Campaign Co-Chair, views these two major gifts as “…rounding the final corner and
heading into the homestretch. It’s a sprint to the finish line from here, and we want to
encourage our community to help us reach it.”
Donations can be made through The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation,
via The Foundation or Track Quest websites (www.trackquest.ca ), by telephone, and by
mail. For more information contact:
