Success Stories
The following are comments on the six Prom Project events that took place at
Bayside Secondary School, Centennial Secondary School, Centre Hastings High
School, North Hastings High School, Prince Edward Collegiate, and Trenton
High School.
School staff, Principals, volunteers, Hastings and Prince Edward District School
Board Trustees, and Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation Directors
provided the following insights as to the need and success of Prom Project.
“I’d have to say it was a wonderful success.”
“The boys quickly shopped the mens’ wear, and all the suits and jackets are
gone! The girls were on a mission –They did not feel badly that they were
having to choose a dress from us - we kept having to send assistants in to
retrieve tried on dresses! Many girls tried on several dresses, and modeled
them in the gym - and they all looked so wonderful and happy! “
“I think I can confidently say that the dresses and clothes went to the kids who
needed them, but by encouraging all students to check out the selection and
shop if they wished, ensured that everyone felt comfortable!”
“Glenda and Jennifer from Shoppers Drug Marg were doing a thriving
business, and the girls really enjoyed the service. We had a volunteer to assist
with quick alterations, and she was able to reassure students that they could get
more complex alterations done to really make the gowns fit perfectly.”
“Half of the attendees were boys and there was a good cross-section of students
from our school, other schools in our board and grade 8 students which we
thought was great.”
“Even though it was a small turn out they were all extremely appreciative of not
only the dresses and suits, but also of the hair and make-up. The first family
actually cried when they found out that the student could have her hair done
for the day of prom, she was very excited to say the least. We’re continuing
to reach out to students from our own school as we’ve been able to leave the
dresses set up for a few more days.”
“I think it was a great success on many different fronts.”
“This is a story of a young father who lost his wife two years ago in a tragic
accident. He came in with two out of four of his children and both of the girls
were excited to find the perfect dress. “
“The smiles on the faces of the students were priceless...and the excitement in
the change room as the girls would pass dresses around, and help each other
into them was contagious.”
“The two ladies from Shoppers Drug Mart, Quinte Mall, were amazing with
the girls. One of the girls was so excited about her gown she went back up on
the stage to show everyone. I said, “You look like a princess!” She looked into
the mirror and said, “I feel like a princess!” When she packed her gown in a
bag and headed to the makeup table, one of the ladies already had her makeup
all packed into a blue case....she was watching her and prepared the package
ahead of time.”
