Food for Learning supports The Great Big Crunch
ON March 8, 2012, students across Canada participated in The Great Big Crunch, trying to make a crunch so loud,
everyone would know they were enjoying a healthy snack. Toronto Foodshare’s Great Big Crunch event invites
students and teachers to learn about healthy eating, and local & global food systems, while following the journey
from apple seed, to harvest, to market to the core. The Great Big Crunch was created to promote, celebrate
and enjoy healthy snacking and to highlight the availability of local apples all year round. In an effort
to encourage local children to increase their consumption of fruit and vegetables, Food for Learning
purchased local apples from Grills Orchards and The Campbell’s Orchards allowing three schools to
participate in the Great Big Crunch. Students from Bayside Public School, CML Snider Elementary School ,and St.
Carthagh Catholic School simultaneously crunched their apples on March 8.
All I's On Learning - Project Enhancement Fund In Action
Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation Chair, Elaner Pound, had an opportunity to experience the Project Enhancement
Fund in action and the following were her observations.
“I have just come from spending a great evening talking with students about their use of ipads and other media in the classroom.
It was amazing! The students were able to articulate what they had learned and were able to demonstrate that learning to people of
all ages. The energy in the room was very evident. I learned so much! For example, I wish that I could have been able to do my
“book reports” using the process the students displayed this evening when I was their age. It would have made the report so much
more interesting!”
