A Word from the Director of Education
The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation serves a very important role
in our community. The Learning Foundation raises funds to provide all students of the
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board with expanded opportunities for success.
Examples of this work include supporting students who require emergency funds to deal
with unanticipated financial challenges, supporting school projects that benefit groups of
students, supporting enrichment activities like the Quinte Regional Science and Technology
Fair, and the Prom Project - an initiative aimed at ensuring all students can afford to attend
their prom. The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation works with a wide range
of individuals and organizations to raise awareness and ensure that resources are available
to assist students in need.
During my first year as Director of Education for the Hastings and Prince Edward District
School Board I have come to better understand and appreciate the work of the Learning
Foundation. Maribeth deSnoo and her team work tirelessly to raise the necessary funds
and put into place supports for students in need. This includes countless events that support
fundraising or that directly support students. The Learning Foundation also oversees the
successful Student Nutrition Programs for a large segment of Eastern Ontario. The Hastings
and Prince Edward Learning Foundation board of governors are a dedicated group of
volunteers that work hard to accomplish the organization’s mission and work in partnership
with the school board. We are truly fortunate to have such caring and supportive partners.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is committed to providing programs
and services to help each student reach his or her full potential. Our mission is to support
student achievement and help our students to become caring, respectful citizens who
contribute to society in a positive way. It seems only fitting that our closest partner, The
Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation models these very attributes and extends
a helping hand to those most in need. It is through this partnership that we ensure all of our
students have the same opportunities to succeed.
Food for Learning supports The Great Big Crunch
ON March 8, 2012, students across Canada participated in The Great Big Crunch, trying to make a crunch so loud,
everyone would know they were enjoying a healthy snack. Toronto Foodshare’s Great Big Crunch event invites
students and teachers to learn about healthy eating, and local & global food systems, while following the journey
from apple seed, to harvest, to market to the core. The Great Big Crunch was created to promote, celebrate
and enjoy healthy snacking and to highlight the availability of local apples all year round. In an effort
to encourage local children to increase their consumption of fruit and vegetables, Food for Learning
purchased local apples from Grills Orchards and The Campbell’s Orchards allowing three schools to
participate in the Great Big Crunch. Students from Bayside Public School, CML Snider Elementary School ,and St.
Carthagh Catholic School simultaneously crunched their apples on March 8.
All I's On Learning - Project Enhancement Fund In Action
Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation Chair, Elaner Pound, had an opportunity to experience the Project Enhancement
Fund in action and the following were her observations.
“I have just come from spending a great evening talking with students about their use of ipads and other media in the classroom.
It was amazing! The students were able to articulate what they had learned and were able to demonstrate that learning to people of
all ages. The energy in the room was very evident. I learned so much! For example, I wish that I could have been able to do my
“book reports” using the process the students displayed this evening when I was their age. It would have made the report so much
more interesting!”
QUINTE REGIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR
Are hand sanitizers creating super bugs? This was just one of
the questions asked, and ideas tested at the 53rd annual Quinte
Regional Science and Technology Fair.
This year, 212 students presented 169 projects, and represented
all local school boards and associations including: Hastings
Prince Edward District School Board, Algonquin Lakeshore
Catholic District School Board, Albert College, Sonrise
Christian Academy and the Homeschoolers Association. Projects
included displays in life science, physical science, engineering,
biotechnology and environmental science.
The variety and complexity of projects this year went far beyond
the expectations of our Quinte Regional Science and Technology
Fair Committee and the judges. The judges had a very diffi cult
day of decisions, and they commented on the originality and
inventiveness of the projects, which ranged from “The Antioxidant
Effect: A Study on the Relationship Between Antioxidants and
Free Radicals” to “Theresa’s Interplanetary Shipping 3 - A
Multi-phasic Independent Mission design analysis.”
Participants and parents were also treated to a Science/Magic
Show featuring Dominic Tremblay. All were spell bound as he
demonstrated much scientifi c prestidigitation.
Final judging of student projects included the awarding of 30
speciality prizes, determining best in grade awards, and choosing
the fi ve students, from grades 7 to 12, that would represent our
region at the 2012 Canada-wide Science Fair in Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island in May.
This year the fi ve students that will represent us at the national
level are:
-Dan Manning and Corey Morrison from Albert College with
their project-“Hand Sanitizers Creating Superbugs: Isolating
DNA with Hand Sanitizer then Transforming New Bacteria”
From left to right: QRSTF Committee member Kyla
Riedstra-Wiesner, Canada Wide Team members, Theresa
DeCola, Emilie Leneveu, Katie Rampp, Corey Morrison, Dan
Manning, and QRSTF Committee member Melissa Wright
Science is alive, well and
thriving in Quinte
(No volcanos but hovercrafts, studies on DNA and Ollies)
3
(A project that looked at whether hand sanitizers are responsible
for creating super bugs)
-Katie Rampp from Georges Vanier School with her project,
”Can you hear me?”
(multiple over-ear headphones were tested, to fi nd out their
effectiveness in blocking out ambient noise.)
-Emilie Leneveu from Marc Garneau, and a project titled, “Do
You Multitask?”
(designed to determine the negative effects of multitasking, if they
exist, and how to improve on net time savers and organization
skills.)
-Theresa DeCola from Bayside Secondary School, and her
study which she called, “Theresa’s Interplanetary Shipping 3 - A
Multi-phasic Independent Mission design analysis” (A detailed
design, and plan of a manned mission to Mars)
On behalf of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair
Committee, we would like to thank all sponsors of the fair. Of
special note is the continued major gift support of $5000 from
the Belleville Kiwanis Club!
Without this donation, and the selfl ess giving of volunteer time,
the fair would not take place.
Congratulations to all participants for the amazing projects. We
hope to see you, and more youth of the region explore and engage
through science innovation and engineering in next year’s fair.
Success Stories
The following are comments on the six Prom Project events that took place at
Bayside Secondary School, Centennial Secondary School, Centre Hastings High
School, North Hastings High School, Prince Edward Collegiate, and Trenton
High School.
School staff, Principals, volunteers, Hastings and Prince Edward District School
Board Trustees, and Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation Directors
provided the following insights as to the need and success of Prom Project.
“I’d have to say it was a wonderful success.”
“The boys quickly shopped the mens’ wear, and all the suits and jackets are
gone! The girls were on a mission –They did not feel badly that they were
having to choose a dress from us - we kept having to send assistants in to
retrieve tried on dresses! Many girls tried on several dresses, and modeled
them in the gym - and they all looked so wonderful and happy! “
“I think I can confidently say that the dresses and clothes went to the kids who
needed them, but by encouraging all students to check out the selection and
shop if they wished, ensured that everyone felt comfortable!”
“Glenda and Jennifer from Shoppers Drug Marg were doing a thriving
business, and the girls really enjoyed the service. We had a volunteer to assist
with quick alterations, and she was able to reassure students that they could get
more complex alterations done to really make the gowns fit perfectly.”
“Half of the attendees were boys and there was a good cross-section of students
from our school, other schools in our board and grade 8 students which we
thought was great.”
“Even though it was a small turn out they were all extremely appreciative of not
only the dresses and suits, but also of the hair and make-up. The first family
actually cried when they found out that the student could have her hair done
for the day of prom, she was very excited to say the least. We’re continuing
to reach out to students from our own school as we’ve been able to leave the
dresses set up for a few more days.”
“I think it was a great success on many different fronts.”
“This is a story of a young father who lost his wife two years ago in a tragic
accident. He came in with two out of four of his children and both of the girls
were excited to find the perfect dress. “
“The smiles on the faces of the students were priceless...and the excitement in
the change room as the girls would pass dresses around, and help each other
into them was contagious.”
“The two ladies from Shoppers Drug Mart, Quinte Mall, were amazing with
the girls. One of the girls was so excited about her gown she went back up on
the stage to show everyone. I said, “You look like a princess!” She looked into
the mirror and said, “I feel like a princess!” When she packed her gown in a
bag and headed to the makeup table, one of the ladies already had her makeup
all packed into a blue case....she was watching her and prepared the package
ahead of time.”
“This is really moving for me to read about these wonderful happenings.
These are truly game changers for many children and parents alike in our
communities.
The pay forward factor will generate good will through all whom this initiative
touches. You and your group deserve many thanks!”
“Last night’s Prom Project was a tremendous success. Every once in a while, a
special event rolls around that really leaves a mark on people, this was definitely
one of them.”
“The responses are picture perfect; both emotionally and clearly as an obvious
answer to the perceived “need” that exists.
I believe that the entire hands on crew at the Learning Foundation and all
participating schools should be proud for a job well done; but as well as for the
heart-felt effort that was obviously appreciated beyond expectations.”
“This evening, THS hosted its first Prom Project which made access to prom
and graduation attire available to all students. With hundreds of dresses and
suits, students had a huge variety to choose from. The red carpet was rolled
out for the event, and organizers were dressed in formal attire to welcome
shoppers. The atmosphere was energized with a live dj and plenty of snacks to
keep shoppers happy during their search for that ‘special outfit’. THS would
like to thank the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, along with
the vast host of community sponsors for making this opportunity available for
students of Quinte West.”
Mr. Eric Hamilton Mr. Mark Bruneau Ms. Sharon Edwards
Dear Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Bruneau and Ms. Edwards;
As Chair of the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, I would like to
thank you for participating in “The Prom Project”. Your donation of dry cleaning,
bagging and storing the dresses, suits, etc. was very generous. This valuable donation
has made Prom Night and/or Grade 8 graduation much more accessible to all students
within Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
Several wonderful stories have come to us with respect to the Prom Project and I
would like to share one with you.
At one of the sites, a young girl walked through the gym doors and made a b-line for
a bubblegum pink satin gown. She took it off the rack and headed right to the change
room. “I am so excited…this is the best day of my life!” she said to her friend. One of
the volunteers at this site knew that the gown was a bit big for her, but she also knew
that there was a “seamstress extraordinaire” at the school who would make the dress fit
to perfection… and she did. This young girl had lost her mom to cancer (after a 6 year
battle with the disease). Thanks to this initiative, this young woman will look gorgeous
at her event.
As Frank Gielen, our Foundation Treasurer noted, “We will never be able to measure
the effect of the Prom Project, but it is clear that this opportunity has made a big
difference to our students, their parents and the community.”
Thank you again for helping to make this happen.
Sincerely;
Elaner Pound
