From a Director 's Perspective
When I was asked a little over a year ago if I was interested in helping out with the Learning
Foundation, I requested some information to find out what the Foundation does, and why.
After learning about the various initiatives and programs that are funded by the Foundation,
it didn’t take very long to decide this was an organization that was worth supporting.
One of the most important programs the Learning Foundation assists with is the Food for
Learning program. My mom and some other teacher-friends of hers used to do it informally
in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, so I grew up knowing it was important that kids need good
nutrition to be able to focus on school (I can still hear her saying ‘belly first, work next!’).
Unfortunately some children don’t get everything they need before getting to school, and
Food for Learning helps fill in those gaps. I recently had the opportunity to join my children
at the breakfast program at York River Public School, and I was impressed! The food was
nutritious, filling, covered all the major food groups and was delicious! The room was full of
students enjoying a great breakfast before getting to class. Thank you to everyone involved
that makes this program possible, and particularly to the volunteers that are there early
every morning preparing and serving the meals to our kids.
The Learning Foundation also supports extra-curricular activities. As a business owner I
know that just a basic education doesn’t provide students with enough to enable them to be
as successful as they can be. The Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair is a prime
example of how to enhance students’ real-life education. To stimulate a kid’s imagination
and then provide them with resources and a venue in which to develop their ideas is a
fantastic thing. The specific invention or innovation that they develop may ‘make a better
mouse trap’, but the process the student goes through to develop their idea and the real
lessons they learn in doing it will provide them with skills and experience to prepare them
for the workforce and serve them the rest of their lives. And then of course there’s good old
fashioned fun (because they’re kids!) – kudos to all that helped the Foundation with new
infrastructure like the sports track at Trenton High School and the playground equipment at
several of the primary schools.
When we help support students outside of the regular curriculum learning expectations, we
not only stimulate enquiring young minds, we also engage our local communities in the
practical education of our kids. These interactions are essential to their development into
supportive, productive and happy contributors to our social fabric, as well as to themselves.
If you get a chance drop by one of the programs that the HPE Learning Foundation supports;
it’s very educational!
Sincerely,
Kevin Vance
Director, The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation
Student
Emergency
Fund
On July 12th, 2011 we lost our beautiful mother only ten short days after her sudden cancer diagnosis. We
were fortunate that we were able to be with her as we said our final goodbyes to someone who always led
by example of always putting others before self and to always look out for those who are less fortunate or
going through tough times. You see, that is who our Mom, Mary Sutherland was.
Our Mom’s dedication to serving others began when we located to Belleville when our Dad (Lyle) was
hired as an elementary principal with HPEDSB. My Mom noticed that there were children without proper
toys so she started a toy lending library. She later began Special Nursery for children and families that
had special needs. Her compassion for others was noticed by the Ontario government as they hired her to
supervise day nurseries to ensure quality care for all children in daycares in Eastern Ontario.
My Mom’s passion continued when she became the Director of Thistletown and fought for the families of hard-to-serve children
to keep the institution open, when the premier wanted it closed. My mom and the families won. She moved through different
ranks within the government including Supervisor of Syl Apps Detention Center where she helped adolescents turn their lives
around, to finally being the Administrator of Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital. It was there that my Mom’s true compassion and
empathy for people shined and we all learned so much from her about the importance of helping others during a time of need.
My Mom always reminded us that everyone, at some point in their lives needs help but more importantly the knowledge that
someone, somewhere cares.
I was fortunate that my parents retired back to the Belleville area so they could be closer to their kids and grandchildren. I often
used my Mom as my best resource when trying to find ways to help underserviced families in our community. My Mom always
loved to hear the stories of how I was able to access the different supports offered through The Learning Foundation to help the
marginalized families in our community. She was the greatest cheerleader when I would explain how one student’s meds were
paid for or how another family was helped with gas cards so they could be with their terminally ill family member in another
city. The list was endless. The best part of accessing the fund is how quickly the help occurs and how the anonymity allows the
families to accept assistance with their dignity intact.
As you can see, the decision to make memorial donations directed to The Learning Foundation in memory of my Mom was an
easy decision for our family to make. In fact we have continued as a family to donate in lieu of some milestone birthday gifts,
teacher gifts etc. I have seen how much families benefit from the Student Emergency Fund and also how so much of the money
stays in our community as well.
I hope others will consider choosing the Student Emergency Fund as their charity of choice when honoring someone they care
about in the future. It allows me to feel that her legacy of caring lives on.
2012 Golf
Tournament Results
Our 11th annual golf tournament was both a fundraising
success, with almost $35,000 raised, and a great time for all
that participated and volunteered. The 116 golfers, including
three student teams, played in our ‘best ball’ event, that was
hosted at the Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club. As always,
the competitive golfers were keen on the various on course
games, including longest drive and closest to the hole, while
the recreational golfers were there to enjoy a beautiful day in
support of The Learning Foundation. The real winner of our
11th Annual Tournament: our students! The proceeds from the
day benefited our Student Emergency Fund, and last school
year, we supported 305 students in crisis situations through
the fund. A thank you to our tournament sponsors, golfers and
volunteers for a very successful event!
It is well known that there is a link between nutrition and a child’s ability to learn. In an
effort to ensure that every student in South East Ontario can reach their full potential in
the classroom, and that hunger is eliminated as a barrier to learning, all publically funded
schools in our region are eligible to receive support for student nutrition programs.
Student Nutrition Programs in South East Ontario are going strong. All across our region schools are providing quality breakfast,
snack and lunch programs to the students, in a joint effort to ensure that all children have the nourishment they need to maximize
their learning ability in the classroom.
Through a contract with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation is the
‘Lead Agency’ for student nutrition programs in the South East region. Across the province, fifteen Lead Agencies are responsible
for maintaining a province wide standard for program delivery, providing local communities with a framework to assist in meeting
the nutrition needs of children & youth and to distribute the provincial funding to local schools. Due to the vast geographic area and
the number of school boards operating in the region, The Learning Foundation depends on the assistance of various communities
to implement the program and provide support to schools. This is accomplished through the work of four Community Partnership
Committees:
Food for Thought – Lanark County
Student Nutrition Programs
in South East Ontario
Nutrition 4 Kids – The United Counties of Leeds & Grenville
The Food Sharing Project – Kingston, Lennox & Addington and Frontenac Counties
Food for Learning – Hastings and Prince Edward Counties
The Ministry’s vision of the Student Nutrition Programs is to provide children and youth access to healthy food so that they have the
best opportunity to succeed. Each Community Partnership Committee works directly with local schools to ensure that they have the
resources and support required to meet the nutritional needs of all children and youth during the school day. The number of meals
and snacks served continues to rise each year. Below is a summary of meals and snacks served over the past six years:
2012 Holiday Appeal
Dear Friend,
On behalf of The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, it is our hope that you will once again consider
making a financial contribution that will positively impact students in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. The Hastings
and Prince Edward Learning Foundation exists to provide enhanced educational opportunities that will encourage and
enthuse students in their studies. Our students are tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, doctors and skilled labourers. If you have
not yet had the opportunity to sponsor our projects this year, your continued support will allow us to offer the following
assistance and enhancements towards students’ learning opportunities.:
Our Project Enhancement Fund was created to encourage school staff members
to submit applications for funding of projects that provide innovative, unique and
exciting enhancements to curriculum requirements. Projects must:
• enhance educational opportunities for students,
• support an initiative in Healthy Active Living, the Arts or Innovative Practices.
In 2011-12 Food for Learning programs served 701,049 meals and snacks to students in schools from
the Catholic, Public, Mohawk and French School boards in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
Food for Learning assists schools with the organization and funding of nutrition programs that feed
hungry students. Children who are well nourished are more likely to:
• attend school • be able to concentrate
• have high energy levels • have higher self esteem and
• be interested, active and participate • have better developed social skills.
This year we celebrate the 53rd year of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology
Fair. The fair remains as the Quinte area’s premier event to celebrate and encourage
student achievement in science and technology. During the fair over 300 students from
grades 4 to 12 gather to display their academic achievements to the general public and
be judged against their peers for the opportunity to represent the Quinte Region at the
Canada-wide Science Fair.
Len & Olive Black
Memorial Fund
The Len & Olive Black Memorial Fund’ supports students facing financial hardship, and who:
• Require assistance with purchasing materials and items to allow them to fully participate
in courses, leveling the playing field for all students (i.e. specialized welding glasses for
technical courses, character shoes for music theatre courses, suitable shorts and shoes for
gym classes, art kits for art classes, etc)
• Would like to pursue post secondary education and need assistance with the application fee.
The purpose of the Student Emergency Fund is to quietly provide immediate assistance to
students in crisis. This funding could be used to purchase items such as eyeglasses, Epi-Pens,
medical supplies, food and clothing, transportation, field trip subsidies and for other financial
needs that result from family emergencies (e.g., fire, flood, layoffs, illness, etc). During the
2011-2012 school year, 305 requests for emergency funds were received and granted.
Prom Project will support students at both elementary and secondary schools with attending
their graduation and celebratory events. We will provide our students with the opportunity to
select formal wear, free of charge, to attend their formals and graduation ceremonies. Prom
Project will commemorate the achievemnets of students who have overcome adversity, and
help them celebrate their graduation.
Should a donation at this time not be possible, be assured that your past generosity is greatly appreciated and valued.
We wish you a safe and happy holiday season. If you have questions about The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning
The way that Food for Learning helps me, and all the student
at our school, is if we don’t have food at home we can relax
knowing that there is some food at school for breakfast and
lunch. No matter what, there is always milk, yogurt, bagels,
apples and sometimes apple juice. The kids at school are very
thankful for all that the Food for Learning program has to offer.
My sister and I use Food for Learning almost every day. We
use it because we live with just our Dad and all the money that
he makes goes towards bills and he can’t spend too much on
food. Mrs. Morrow [Teacher/Librarian and Food for Learning
Coordinator at Bayside Secondary School] helps all of us in the
school and I am very thankful for her and all she does. The
library is probably the most fun place to be. If you need to
get coats or clothes, read, hang out, surf the web, then come to
the library. Mrs. Morrow will welcome you with open arms.
Here at Bayside Secondary School, the students are crazy but
the library is the best place to be at school on lunch.
S.t.E.E.D.S.
The S.t.E.E.D.S. program was directly related to many aspects of the both the Healthy Active Living and Cooperative Education
Curriculum. Horseback riding has been recognized for decades as physically, psychologically, socially and educationally beneficial.
More specifically, horseback riding has been linked with improved levels of concentration, enhanced learning skills, self-esteem
and sense of well being as students accomplish program goals. It has also been identified as helpful to individuals with autism,
developmental/cognitive deficits, and physical challenges. People who participate in programs like this also gain valuable teamwork
skills, body posture, core stability, balance and agility will also improve through the program. These physical benefits were
transferable into the school environment as well as the outside world. Improvement in student motivation, attendance and attitudes
towards learning were inevitable.
Vision:
Catherine Jamieson, Teacher
The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation believes that all students deserve a
Why I Give
The experiences that one has in earlier years often shape values and influence actions for a
lifetime. While I was growing up on the farm, I spent many hours sitting under the maple
tree listening attentively to stories of my Grandfather’s childhood. Grandpa was an orphan
who learned the pain of hunger as a young boy roaming the streets of Edinburgh, Scotland.
At age eight, he was taken to an orphanage in Glasgow: two years later, he sailed across the
Atlantic and eventually arrived at a new home in the Bancroft area. His foster parents treated
him kindly and supplied him with food, clothing, a warm home and some books. Although
Grandpa did not go to school as a child, he grasped every opportunity to learn and, as an
adult, successfully completed a business course at Albert College. Because someone offered
kindness and provided basic needs, Grandpa’s life changed. He became a productive citizen
and a political leader and pillar in the North Hastings Community. This young boy who did
not have an opportunity to attend school fought hard as Chairman of the North Hastings
School Board to erect North Hastings High School in Bancroft so that future generation’s
could receive a complete secondary education without residing in distant communities.
Grandpa influenced my decision to become an educator and my knowledge of his childhood
strongly impacted my actions as a classroom teacher and a school principal. I monitored
lunches carefully and was always prepared to supplement partially filled lunch boxes with
nutritious food. I watched for children who might not have a winter coat or boots: they
deserved to be warm and comfortable and to look well dressed like their peers. I noticed the
child who sat in the front seat and was still struggling to see the blackboard. Quietly this
young person would explain that his parents could not afford to purchase glasses for him
right now. Is it fair that he should work so hard while enduring a throbbing headache when
others could relax and enjoy their learning?
Before advancing too far in my career, I realized that having basic needs fulfilled was
essential to learning but that there were other issues that greatly affected a student’s
motivation. I recall a child who did not want to attend school in grade seven. His parents
communicated to me his feelings of inadequacy. He was not athletic like his friends but he
was a very capable boy who could perform well if motivated. Fortunately, he was given the
opportunity to play a musical instrument in Grade seven and he became a master of that
instrument. His confidence grew ---- he arrived at school every morning with a smile on
his face. His academic grades climbed! Each young person is unique and excels in some
aspect of learning. Some are gifted in construction, some in the intricate theories of science,
some in drama, some in playing an instrument and some in football. While the prescribed
curriculum provides a broad range of learning opportunities, it cannot address every need.
--- But all students should have experiences that will build their confidence and enable them
to reach their full potential.
So why do I give to The Learning Foundation? In retirement, I can still visualize the child
who rushes through the school door with an anxious and hungry expression. Unlike my
Grandpa, I know that this student will receive a nutritious breakfast and snacks throughout
the day. Even in summer months, The Learning Foundation provides funds for hungry
children to obtain food. I am also reassured that all children can have warm clothing or
glasses because The Foundation’s Student Emergency Fund responds to urgent needs. All
students wishing to attend their Prom can participate proudly wearing clothing provided
by the Foundation’s Prom Project. Through the Project Enhancement Fund and support of
initiatives such as the Science & Technology Fair, the Learning Foundation enhances the
opportunities of many students, providing them with more meaningful and valued school
experiences. I give to The Hastings Prince Edward Learning Foundation because it can
positively alter the pathways of students’ lives. Just like my Grandfather’s foster parents,
The Foundation represents, for me, a changing force that can help to give all students an
equal opportunity to become successful pillars in their community and in life!
