A Busy Term
Welcome to Term 4, the term of
celebration! After five weeks of leave, it
is a pleasure to be back, refreshed and
ready to continue serving the Redeemer
community. Many thanks to Miss Rosilyn
Frieberg (Deputy Principal) who fulfilled
the role of Acting Principal in my
absence.
The joys of this busy term begin with the
Year 12 Formal, with other highlights
such as Springboard and Redeemer Fair
to be experienced by the whole
community in the next few weeks.
While I was away, our first group
(Year 9.3) spent four weeks at the
Tuchekoi Outdoor Centre near Gympie
(the new location for our Year 9 Outdoor
Education program). I have been very
pleased to hear the many positive reports
from students, parents and staff covering
all facets of their experience, including
the programming, the environment, the
Blog initiative and the first Open Day.
The success of the program is a credit to
the hard work of many people, including
Mrs Catherine Andress (Outdoor
Education Coordinator), Ms Jodie Hauser
(Assistant Outdoor Education
Coordinator), Mrs Anastasia Strong (Head
of Senior School) and the Tuchekoi staff.
Please encourage these people as you
cross their paths.
From time to time, I take the opportunity
to remind the Redeemer community of
our steady growth and development
which is a great blessing. Evidence of
RLC’s steady growth is the addition of a
Year 7 class for 2012 meaning that there
will be four Year 7 classes rather than the
usual three. A further blessing to
Redeemer comes from our Parents and
Friends Association who have generously
funded the air-conditioning of the
remaining Middle School classrooms
(not specialty rooms) during the
September holidays. Again, this is
thanks to many people.
In closing, I wish all families the very best
for Term 4 and I look forward to
celebrating the term with you.
Mr David Radke (Principal)
Staffing
We welcome back Mrs Jane Gado
(Drama, English) who has returned from
Maternity Leave. As a result, we fondly
farewelled Ms Kellie Benard at the end
of Term 3.
Mrs Catherine Andress (Maths) will be
on leave for Term 4. Her classes will be
covered by Mr Ian Luxford.
News from Camp Tuchekoi
“Camp Tuchekoi was great because it was
an amazing experience. All the
instructors were awesome - they were
nice, helpful, and just good to talk to.
They teach you a lot of new things that
you would not know, like mountain
biking, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing
and hiking. You learn to cook your own
food and put up your own tents. When
you do your two day or four day hikes,
the instructors teach you how to be a
leader and how to navigate. My time at
Camp Tuchekoi was unreal. There is no
word to describe how great it was!”
Ryan Hull (9.3)
“Tuchekoi, where do I start? Hiking,
canoeing, camping, rock climbing,
mountain bike riding? I don’t know. But
what I do know is everything was
spectacular: the landscapes, the activities,
the leaders, everything, it was absolutely
spectacular. Personally, I learnt heaps
about teamwork, friendship, pushing
through hard things and something about
laziness (I think I forgot about that one).
But I’ll tell you something I didn’t forget,
something I can never forget, the
experience. I’ve had the time of my life,
and I think I can speak for everyone else
in saying that. Everyone had their
strengths and their weaknesses, but I will
never forget that feeling I had when I
came out at the end. Tuchekoi has been
the best thing for me, and I think, it was
brilliant!”
Josh Moore (9.3)
Alcohol and Parties
Recently, some parents have voiced their
concerns in relation to students and
parties. As we approach the end of the
year and the celebrations that inevitably
occur, especially for Year 12s, the college,
along with many parents, experience
some apprehension about the potential
dangers of such activities, especially
where alcohol is involved. The college, of
course, does not promote, organise,
supervise or sponsor any parties outside
of the formal events of the official school
calendar, even though there may be a
suggestion, quite false, that we give our
blessing. Parents who host parties or
have children attending celebrations
would be well advised to check on their
legal obligations. Above all, the welfare
of our students is our major priority so
we need to take heed of our
responsibilities in this area.
In the event that a Redeemer student
who is affected by alcohol arrives at a
school activity or co-curricular activity like
a sports match, the student will not be
permitted to play in the match or
participate in the activity, even if this
causes the forfeit of the match or
activity.
We need to remind our children that
experimentation with alcohol is not safe
or legal. Alcohol consumption impacts on
a person's perception of reality and
ability to make good decisions. This can
be hazardous for teenagers who have
less problem-solving and decision-making
experience. I encourage all families to
take the time to have conversations with
their children about responsible party
behaviour.
Parents Council
The Parents Council is an informal advisory
body of parents assisting the Principal by
providing feedback on matters which are
brought to them for advice. It acts as a
channel of communication to the Principal
for parents who have concerns or
questions which they prefer to have
handled in this forum and which are of
relevance to the wider college community.
It maintains no formal minutes, and its
discussions are confidential.
Parents are invited to direct any discussion
items for the next meeting on 11 October,
Enrolment Strength
Redeemer is experiencing strong interest
for enrolment in Year 7 next year. The
demand for enrolment at this year level
has exceeded the three classes currently
offered.
There are varying factors for this demand
including the State Government’s
announcement to move Year 7 into High
school in the coming years, with many
families making the move to Redeemer
earlier than they originally planned.
In order to cater for this trend, Redeemer
Lutheran College Council has decided to
add an extra Year 7 class next year,
resulting in four classes of Year 7 for 2012.
A suitable classroom will be provided for
the extra class within the Middle School
precinct.
Due to the extra class, there are now some
vacancies for Year 7 in 2012. There are
also enrolment vacancies across a number
of other year levels. If you are aware of
families interested in enrolling their
children in any year level for 2012, please
encourage them to contact our
Enrolments Officer, Mrs Cathy Mostert on
Safety in Cyberspace
Parent Education Night
Redeemer Chapel, Tuesday 18 October, 7.00pm
When I was young, there was one family TV set with four channels
in our household and people questioned the value of television
and the impact television was having on children. Monitoring
television viewing was relatively easy for a parent in those days.
Rapid changes in technology have seen the modern household
connected to iPods, iPads, iPhones, T-Hubs, personal computers,
laptops, and gaming devices.
Today’s youth are more likely to clock up many hours in
cyberspace, chatting online, writing status updates on Facebook,
commenting on posts, sharing photos and videos, sending texts
and playing games with all the other friends who are supposed to
be doing their homework. Whilst we can’t always look over the
shoulders of our children, we need to as parents and educators
ensure that they are aware of the dangers online and to teach
them to use technology in a responsible manner.
One of the important things for teenagers is to be accepted by
their peers. Social media and mobile phones allow them to connect
with their friends, but due to the absence of adults or authority
figures, dangerous or harmful interactions can occur. Many
students are unaware of the legal implications of their behaviour
and in some cases, that their behaviour violates child protection
laws.
In school, if students are using technology inappropriately and
their actions are harmful to other students, consequences are
serious. In the case of cyber-bullying, students are made aware
that engaging in this sort of behaviour out of school hours is not
acceptable. Due to the fact that this impacts on students and their
relationships, this becomes a school matter.
Teachers and House Leaders have been educating students about
these issues and in the coming weeks, representatives from the
Queensland Police will be addressing Senior School students in
assembly this term. The talk will include topics such as cyber
bullying, ‘sexting’, predatory behaviour, security and privacy
online.
A parent education night ‘Safety in Cyberspace’ will be held at
Redeemer Chapel on Tuesday 18 October at 7.00pm for parents of
all year levels. Senior Constable Ricki Brudenall, District Crime
Prevention Coordinator and Sergeant Michelle Mullen will be
presenting information about how we can assist our children to be
safe and responsible. All parents are encouraged to attend.
Spiritual Anorexia
“Never before have young people been told so much, and
never before have they known so little. Under the impact of
marketers, they have become greedy little adults…In contrast
to the young people of the Middle Ages - who knew they
had an immortal soul in the shell of a mortal body,
surrounded by the daily evidence of death and dying -
stripped of community, tradition and shared meaning, many
of our young people are spiritual anorexics, empty selves…
and so they feel this urge to fill the void, soothed and made
coherent by consumer products, celebrity news, and neverending
quests for physical perfection.”.
These words of Dr Michael Carr-Greg, the well-known
Australian adolescent psychologist, summarise very
poignantly the feelings many have about the spiritual
bankruptcy increasingly evident in Australian culture. It
would be unfair, however, to restrict this to adolescents. They
are merely consuming the products and moral bankruptcy
which the adult world is handing down to them. So don’t
blame the kids! There’s just too much money for adults to
make!
What so many people are missing, in so many cases unawares,
is the consciousness of being part of a bigger story. Postmodernism,
so-called, has done everything it can to convince
us that there are no big stories to be told, no arch-narratives,
and that whatever meaning we find in life is whatever we
make for ourselves. Morality is what we make it. Who is up to
such a task?? No wonder it’s just easier to opt out and
consume.
The Christian faith is, in this context, completely countercultural.
It tells a big story of God acting in history, of a past,
present and future that is enacted by Jesus of Nazareth.
Taking the call to follow Jesus seriously does two vital things:
it hardwires us to the most significant, fundamental and
challenging moral teaching in human history, and it opens us
to a spiritual transcendence completely lacking in modern
consumerism.
Redeemer will no longer be Redeemer if it gives up on this
message. It’s at our heart. People can challenge it, question it,
even complain about it, but the message stays. Any other
message would make Redeemer’s existence pointless.
