1. Iona Isl<strong>and</strong> — Unique Opportunity<br />

• decrease sewage input onto mudflat — follow response<br />

• missed rapid response (between 1989-94)<br />

• Our three-year time series may represent mid- or near-end point<br />

• silver — good tracer for sewage (horizontal distribution)<br />

• Zn <strong>and</strong> Hg still high — but small area<br />

• AO site — recovering as indicated by nutrients, chl a, 1 o <strong>and</strong> 2 o<br />

productivity, fish from previous azoic state<br />

• benthic invertebrate populations are dynamic <strong>and</strong> patchy (important<br />

implications for monitoring)<br />

• Dunlin — overwinters — sustainable population — its toxic loadings<br />

are good indicator of health of estuary<br />

• birds may be eating meiofauna (
