Judith Iriarte-Gross and Jessica
Swoner, senior education major, represented
the MTSU SENCER team at
the 2007 SENCER Summer Institute
in Portland, Maine. In addition to
attending SENCER workshops and
plenary lectures, they presented a
poster titled "What We Have Learned
from SENCER Since SSI 2005."
This poster was also co-authored by
Martha Weller, Department of Physics
and Astronomy, and Toto Sutarso,
Information Technology Division.
Gary Wulfsberg has been elected
chairman of the International Coordinating
Committee for Nuclear Quadrupole
Interactions at the XVIII International
Symposium on Nuclear
Quadrupole Interactions Conference
held August 5-10 in Foz do Iguassu
(Iguassu Falls), Brazil. On August
10, he gave an oral presentation titled
“Silver Dichloroacetate: A Compound
with an Extraordinary Range
of NQR Frequencies” and a poster
presentation titled “35Cl Nuclear
Quadruple Resonance Studies of the
Chlorinated Weakly Coordinating
Anions, TRISPHAT and Tristibate:
A Progress Report.”
Gary Wulfsberg was elected to the
Executive Committee of the International
Conference on Hyperfine Interactions
at its meeting in Foz do
Iguaçu (Iguassu Falls), Brazil on
August 9.

girls who
can participate in a GRITS EYH
conference set for October 27 allowing
for more in-depth hands-on
experiences and more opportunities
to network
with
female
STEM
professionals.
Video conferences for middle and
high school girls have been scheduled
for September 25 and October
16 (9:00-10:00 a.m.) and for teachers
and parents on September 27
(3:30-4:30 p.m.). Memphis, with
the help of the local Memphis
AAUW branch, will be hosting an
EYH conference October 18, 2008.

was presented at the 2007 World
Congress in Computer Science,
Computer Engineering, and Applied
Computing Conference held
June 25-28 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Al Cripps presented "Fuzzy Lattice
Reasoning with Delta Measure" at
the same conference, and Sung and
Jungsoon Yoo presented "Student
Performance Monitoring in Classroom
Teaching."
Al Cripps presented “Fuzzy Lattice
Clustering Using Weighted
Cosine” at the Joint Conference on
Information Science 2007 held in
Salt Lake City, Utah on July 18-20.

M athematical Sciences
Anhua Lin attended the Fifth International
Bioinformatics Workshop
on June 24-26 at Shandong University
in Weihai, China. Dr. Lin also
traveled to Shanghai Jiaotong University
to collaborate with mathematicians
as well as give talks.
Abdul Khaliq was an organizer for
a mini symposium titled "Advances
on Modeling in Financial Mathematics"
at the Sixth International Congresson
Industrial and Applied
Mathematics Conference held July 16
-20 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Don Hong and Yu Shyr
(Biostatistics, Vanderbilt University)
edited a volume of books on
"Quantitative Medical Data Analysis
Using Mathematical Tools and Statistical
Techniques." The book has been
published recently by World Scientific
Publisher, New Jersey, 2007
(ISBN: 9812704612).
Don Hong received an NSF award
for organizing a workshop on Quantitative
Proteomic Data Analysis at
MTSU from November 1-2.
Don Hong also received a grant
from the Casualty Actuaries of the
Southeast (CASE) to enhance and
develop the Actuarial Sciences
(ACSI) Program at MTSU.
M ilitary Science
Saeed Foroudastan (CBAS) and
Sharon Salyer (Nursing) observed
MTSU cadets and cadets from all
over the nation during their visit at
the Leadership Development and
Assessment Course (LDAC) at FT
Lewis, Washington
in July.

and will return as seniors. Three
cadets (McNeal, Campbell, Clark)
graduated from LTC and will return
as juniors. Cadets Eaves and Weber
continued on an internship after
LDAC with U.S. Army
units. Additionally, six cadets
(Causey, Dang, Overstreet, Stumph,
Houston, Daniel) completed the U.S.
Army Paratrooper School. One
MTSU cadet was commissioned this
August as Second Lieutenant Donald
Cain. These MTSU cadets carried
on a strong “Blue Raider” tradition
of perseverance and excellence.
P hysics and Astronomy
Vic Montemayor attended the
annual national meeting of the
American Association of Physicists
in Medicine in Minneapolis in
July. He was sent under the auspices
of the Department of Radiation Oncology
of the Vanderbilt Medical
School and the MTSU Department
of Physics and Astronomy.
C BAS
The MTSU Solar Boat Team participated
for the second time in the
14 th Annual American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Solar
Splash, the World Championship
of Intercollegiate Solar Boating. The
competition was extremely challenging
involving 19 national and international
teams. MTSU won first
place in
Outstanding
Drive Train
Design,
third place
in Outstanding
Technical Report, fourth
place in Visual Display, sixth place
in Workmanship, and scored 85 out
of 90 points in Technical Design.
The faculty advisors for the team are
Saeed Foroudastan (CBAS) and Ken
Sergeant (ETIS).
