WANG shU
wins the 2012 pritzker prize

Coincidentally, the 2012 Pritzker Architecture
Prize was recently awarded to 48 year old Chinese
architect Wang Shu. Along with his wife Lu Wenyu
(who was egregiously omitted from the recognition),
Shu founded Amateur Architecture Studio in
Hangzhou in 1997, after working with craftsmen for
over a decade to gain building experience.
Despite catching many in the architectural
community off-guard, the Pritzker jury's selection
of Shu comes on the heels of his recent
French Gold Medal from the Academy
of Architecture, the German Schelling
Architecture Prize, and his participation in
the Venice Biennale.
Interestingly enough, the jury's comments
made it clear that the merits of Shu's work
were considered within the context of
China's rapid development:

"The recent process of urbanization
in China invites debate as to whether
architecture should be anchored in tradition
or should look only toward the future. As
with any great architecture, Wang Shu's
work is able to transcend that debate,
producing an architecture that is timeless,
deeply rooted in its context and yet
universal."
