Noise Compliance Assessment Page 4
Measurements on the vacant land were taken at distances of approximately 350 and 370 metres
from the proposed site at ground level and on an elevated earth mound respectively. If not for
trees there was direct line of sight to the shooters from both locations and are therefore
representative of the potentially worst affected point on the vacant land.
Mr Ted Kelly and his associates of the Illawarra Clay Target Club fired shots using a 12-gauge
shotgun at various locations around the proposed site of the range on the property. The weather
during the noise survey in March was mild, overcast and dry with negligible wind. The weather
during the November noise survey was warm, sunny and dry with negligible wind.
The results are shown in Table 4.1 below:-
Table 4.1 Measured (Lpeak) Gunshot Noise Levels
Location Lin Peak Hold (dB)
Hayes Lane Residence (Location A) 69 to 70
Vacant Land at Ground Level (Location C) 68 to 72
Vacant Land at Elevated Mound (Location D) 72 to 75
Measurements were also taken in Jersey Farm Road in March 2010, adjacent to the nearest
residential boundary to the site (Location B on the attached Site Plan). However it was not
possible to measure gunshot noise at this location as the ambient noise in the area was dominated
by the Wongawilli Colliery. Peak noise emission from the Colliery ranged between 79 and 86 dB
(Lin) Peak Hold. Gunshots were not audible at this location at any time including during lulls in
Colliery activity. We are confident that noise emission from gunshots at the proposed site is
lower at this location than at the nearest resident to the south (i.e. below 70 dB).
Noise emission from the proposed clay target shooting range allows for a maximum usage of
5 days and 1 night at the nearest existing residence, in accordance with the ENCM criterion.
Noise emission from the proposed clay target shooting range allows for a maximum usage of
4 days at the most affected point on vacant residential land to the east.
It is understood that no night time shooting is proposed by the Club.
