Future Investments
As both an educator and a former
Independent School parent, I am very
aware of the sacrifices that parents make
to send their students to a school like
Redeemer. Such sacrifices are long term
investments; they are commitments that
involve time, finances and relationships,
usually extending for many years.
Redeemer’s College Council members are
likewise aware of the sacrifices and
challenges of parents. Therefore, they do
their best to ensure that the trust which
is invested by parents in Redeemer is
honoured and respected as seen through
the programs, facilities and services of
the College.
Next week’s official opening of JG Block
in the Junior School represents past
decisions and planning and we are most
thankful that this project has been
finalised. Now that classroom
construction and services at the Junior
School are nearing completion (within
the next two years), the College Executive
and members of Redeemer’s College
Council are very mindful that planning
for the next five years needs to focus on
developments at the top end of the
school. The future focus on the Middle
and Senior Schools are essential
investments and, while on the surface
they will be seen in facilities and
programs, they really are investments in
Redeemer’s students.
I look forward to the celebrations of next
week and it is with excitement that I look
forward to sharing Redeemer’s forward
planning for the Middle and Senior
Schools in the coming months.
Mr David Radke
Principal
About JG Block
On Monday 10 September, 166 very
excited students from Years 3-5 shifted
into their brand new JG Block, while 50
Year 2 students relocated into JB Block
(MPC Classrooms). We acknowledge the
efforts of our Junior School staff over the
last weekend in relocating their
classrooms in such a short amount of
time.
JG Block is a two storey classroom
building with three classrooms on each
level for Years 3, 4, and 5. Each
classroom has a wet area / break-out
work area adjacent to the main classroom
space, and each room is also expandable
with some rooms having the capacity to
expand into the upper verandah space.
This flexibility of usage provides teachers
with a relatively wide range of
pedagogical choices in the delivery of
their lessons.
In keeping with present practice the
classrooms are IT rich with interactive
white boards and wireless connectivity,
and in keeping with Redeemer College
Council policy, as a new building all
rooms are air-conditioned.
Attached to the Eastern end (Rochedale
Road side) of JG Block is a new purpose
built Junior School toilet block. Between
JG Block and the MPC a new Junior
School Playground has been constructed.
The playground will be developed in two
stages. Stage one (approximately two
thirds of the total playground space) has
been constructed in the same time frame
as JG Block. The remaining playground
space to be developed is the existing
playground immediately adjacent to the
MPC. This will be redeveloped in Term 4.
R U OK? Day ‘A conversation could change a life’.
R U OK? Day is a national day of action on the second Thursday of
September (13 September 2012), dedicated to inspiring all people of
all backgrounds to regularly ask each other ‘Are you ok?'.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of
connection and to empower people to support each other through
life's ups and downs.
The R U OK? Day slogan is ‘A conversation can change a life.’
How can a conversation change a life?
Connection and open, honest conversations are good for our wellbeing
– whether or not we’re struggling with a problem. It helps us
to feel valued and supported by the people around us. There's also
an emerging body of research which links supportive social
relationships and a sense of social connection with protective factors
in suicide prevention.
This week, Mr Kennedy (Home Group teacher) addressed Senior
School students with a special devotion based on the RUOK?
message. Also this week, Home Group teachers presented to Years 9
and 10 students on mental health awareness. Over the next two
weeks, students in Years 11 and 12 will also hear the presentation
on mental health awareness. Representatives from the Student
Council and Senior School student volunteers ran a stall sponsored
by Beyond Blue to raise awareness about mental health in our
community. Information regarding mental health issues was
disseminated to students.
If you have any concerns regarding your child, please make contact
with your child's Home Group teacher or House Leader. Our
counsellors, Mrs Caroline May and Mr Ewan Love can also be
contacted should you have any questions or concerns.
The Gospel Truth
I saw part of a movie recently in which the expression “that's
the gospel truth” was used. I found myself a little annoyed
by it. First of all, the thing that they had said was not the
“gospel”. It had nothing to do with the good news of Jesus.
Secondly, the assertion was not even true. So the writers
struck out on both counts.
Now I know there is no point trying to change the way an
expression is used. My influence in this world is not so great
as all that. And I am not really all that upset about it. But, I
do think that I’d like to remind us all that “gospel truth”
once meant something more than “really true.”
The way the expression is used these days is simply to say
that this claim can be trusted. So it makes sense in current
usage to say “the volcanoes are erupting, that’s the gospel
truth,” or, “your family is dysfunctional, that’s the gospel
truth.” All we are saying is that this thing is really true. It
may be bad news, but it is still true.
But that’s where the expression “gospel truth” ought to
mean more. The word “gospel” is quite literally supposed to
be the “good news” of Jesus the saviour. It is true. And it is
good. The words “gospel truth” should have a ring of joy
about them. They should remind us that God loved us so
much that he sent his only son so that whoever believes in
him may not perish but have eternal life. They should speak
to us of peace beyond understanding, comfort despite
circumstances, and strength for living that is beyond what
we can make for ourselves. The gospel truth is good news
found in Jesus.
So go ahead and use the expression to mean “really true”.
But also let it remind you that there is a truth that is both
really true and really good.
Jesus is Lord and Saviour. He loves you.
Now that’s the gospel truth.
Trust him.
