Farewell 2012 Seniors
Well, we have finally made it to the
finishing line. As the gates of the year
opened, no one really knew what to
expect, but boy did we learn quickly that
effort was definitely required this year.
Little did we realise that in less than 12
short months, we would be the graduating
Seniors of the 2012 cohort at Redeemer
Lutheran College!
Though it may seem cliché, there is no
denying that the class of 2012 has been on
a rollercoaster journey and has certainly
been a grade to remember. Whether you
remember the tremendous House spirit
and team work demonstrated at
interhouse events, the various co-curricular
activities you took part in, the friends you
made, the formal, the Ballon experience, or
simply just staying up into the early hours
of the morning to cram for the assessment
due the next day, each of these was a small
stepping stone that paved the way for our
journey through our secondary education.
However, there have also been a number
of trials and tribulations that have
challenged our grade. From an early age,
we learnt to always have each other’s back
when things may not have gone to plan,
and we were continually offering support
to our friends. There is no doubt that we
have all been tested beyond ways we can
imagine, but as our time comes to an end
we are thankful for these challenges since
they have equipped us for the future, no
matter what path we choose to take. Each
of us has our own individual memories of
our time at Redeemer and we hope that
these will stay with you as you embark
onto the next chapter.
None of this would have been possible
without the help and support of the staff
here at the college or our parents. We
would just like to thank each of the
teachers for their continual support and
encouragement through both the good
and the trying times. You are part of our
memories and have always been there for
guidance whenever we have needed it. It is
because of this that we have successfully
made it through our schooling career and
are ready for the next chapter.
To our parents, we owe you a big thank
you as well for putting up with us when
the stress of Year 12 seemed to be at its
peak, creating tired and moody children.
You were always there for support,
motivation and encouragement when the
end seemed so near yet so far still. We also
thank you for being there with us during
the good times, sharing some treasured
memories. We are truly thankful for
everything you do for us.
To the class of 2012, thank you also. It has
been an absolute pleasure to serve with
you in our final year. Without each and
every one of you, the experience of high
school would not have been as memorable.
We’ve had each other’s backs since day
one, supporting one another through the
great and trying times, and I hope that
these great friendships developed, and
shows of mateship demonstrated, will
continue beyond our years at Redeemer.
We may be biased, but our cohort is one of
a kind, and we could not have been more
proud to have been your leaders.

Senior School End of
Year Arrangements
Year 12 The Valedictory Service will be
held tonight, Thursday 15 November at
7.30pm in Redeemer Chapel.
Year 11 exams begin on began Monday
19 November and finish on Wednesday
28 November. Students in Year 11 must
attend the Valedictory Service on
Thursday 15 November. Year 11 students
are not required to attend school during
their exam block if they do not have an
exam. Year 11 students (except those
required for the Year 8 Orientation
morning) will not be required to attend
school on Thursday 29 November, but
compulsory attendance is required on
Friday 30 November which will be
structured for the return of assessment
items. This is the last school day for Year
11 students.
Year 10 exams begin on Friday
23 November and finish on Wednesday
28 November. Normal classes will
continue during this time. Year 10s will
not be required to attend school on
Thursday 29 November, but compulsory
attendance is required on Friday
30 November, which will be structured for
the return of assessment items. This is the
last school day for Year 10 students.
Year 9 exams begin on Monday
26 November and finish on Wednesday
28 November. Normal classes will
continue during this time. The last day of
school for Year 9.4 and 9.5 core groups is
Monday 3 December. The last day of
school for Year 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3 students is
Tuesday 4 December with students
finishing at 1.00pm. The Closing Service
for the Middle and Senior School will
commence at 7.30pm on Tuesday 4
December in Redeemer Chapel.
Lost Property
As usual at this time of year, there is a
significant amount of clothing in the
Senior School lost property that is either
un-named or where the name is illegible.
Included in the inventory are school shoes,
name brand running shoes, woollen
pullovers, tracksuit tops, sports shirts and
an assortment of swimwear, towels and
sports hats. If your child has lost any items
they should come and check our supply.
Parents are also welcome to come and
search.
All unclaimed property will be removed
on Friday 7 December 2012 at 10.00am.

Year 11 Leadership
Camp 2013
In 2013 all Year 11 Students will
participate in a compulsory leadership
camp from 11-13 February 2013. Whilst on
camp our students will get the
opportunity to discover the characteristics
and personal resources needed to be an
effective leader. The students will learn
not only leadership skills for their senior
years but also personal skills that will
equip them for life. Last week the Year 10
students received a letter outlining all
necessary details of the leadership camp
including a consent form and a “What to
Pack” list. The students are to return their
permission form to the Administration
Assistants in SA Block no later than Friday
23 November 2012.

Year 11 Involvement in
the Valedictory Service
Tonight, Thursday 15 November, the
Valedictory Service for the graduating
Year 12s will be held in Redeemer Chapel.
This is a compulsory function for all Year 11
students. Any non-attendance at this
function will need to be explained in
writing to Mrs Strong, Head of Senior
School
Year 11 students are reminded to provide
finger food suitable for supper. This can
be left at the tuckshop at any time prior to
the service.

OP Release Dates
and Consultations
Year 12 students will be able to access
their OP results on Saturday 15 December
via the Student Connect website. OP
results will arrive by mail on Monday
17 December. Ms Mackie and Mr Rasi will
be at the College in the Senior School
office from 9.00am to 12.00pm should any
student or parent/s need to discuss OP or
QTAC application concerns.
Book Lists 2013
Book lists for 2013 have now been sent
home. The supplier for 2013 will be the
same supplier as for 2012, Sequel Books.
All orders can once again be undertaken
online at www.sequelbooks.com or paper
based (if preferred). The book lists are
also available to download at:
www.redeemer.com.au/about/bookshop
(you do not need to log in to view these).
A reminder that all completed book lists
must be handed into the Business Office
by 4.00pm on Friday 30 November. All
orders left at the Business Office by this
date must include payment. Please note
that Redeemer Lutheran College can not
process credit card payments, as all
payments will be processed by Sequel
Books.

be completed by Sunday 2 December

2012 Yearbook
Attention 12 Students
It is anticipated that the 2012 Reflections
yearbook will be available for collection
from College Reception in the week
commencing Monday 3 December 2012.
Year 12 students who have siblings in
other year levels of the College may have
their yearbook sent home with their
brother or sister.

Achievement
Congratulations to Stuart Rech (Year 12),
who recently competed at the Australian
Schools Swimming Championships in
Sydney where he won a Gold, Silver and
Bronze medal and 4th place in his
individual events. A great achievement

Farewell Mr Steve Hollister
Happy Retirement!

Summer Vacation Care
At the end of this term, Redeemer will
lose one of its long-standing teachers
when Mr Steve Hollister retires after
seventeen years of service to the
college.
Steve was attracted from cool Tasmania
to sunny Queensland to take up the
position as Head of Commerce from the
beginning of 1996. In 2008 the title of
his role was changed to Business
Curriculum Leader. As a teacher of
Business Education, Business
Communication and Technology,
Accounting and Legal Studies, Steve has
worked with hundreds of Redeemer
students who have appreciated his
expertise, his approachable manner and
his sense of humour.
Steve’s commitment to the college and its students has extended
into his involvement in the co-curricular area. Since 1996 he has
coached both Boys and Girls Basketball for our inter-school
competition, being courtside for close to three hundred Saturday
mornings in the last seventeen years. As Coordinator of Boys
Basketball, Steve was the guru of this sport, ensuring that
Redeemer fielded teams, that teams were well coached and
managed, and that the background organisation and
communication happened.
Students who were in Years 11 and 12 in 1998 will remember that
Mr Hollister was one of the enthusiastic staff who accompanied
the Outback Tour in the mid-year holidays and that his wife,
Christine, was the Tour Nurse.
Steve has also served as Chapter President of QIEU, acting as a
representative and spokesman for Redeemer on union matters.
This has involved considerable time and effort, especially in
relation to Enterprise Bargaining.
As Mr Hollister hangs up his whiteboard marker and moves into
the next chapter of his life, the Redeemer Community thanks him
for his service to the college and wishes him every blessing. Now
that he and Christine will have more time to spend sailing their
boat, we wish them smooth sailing and memorable adventures.

RLC OSHC is now accepting bookings for the Summer Vacation
Period. Vacancies are also open to students from outside the
Redeemer School Community.
The cost for Vacation Care is $40.00 per day (Incursions/excursion
extra). Students will need to provide their own morning tea, lunch
and afternoon tea. Booking forms and programs are available
from the OSHC office or via the Redeemer website.

Moving On
Most parents experience a mixture of thoughts and emotions
when their children grow up and leave home. There is pride
in the fine young adult that their child has become. There is
hope for the bright future that every parent wishes for their
child. There may be fear for the weaknesses or failings that
they take with them into the world, or of what the world
may do. Parents can simultaneously rejoice in having the
house to themselves and also feel a sense of loneliness.
In some ways schools are similar. As Redeemer says goodbye
to the Class of 2012, there is a mixture of feelings.
Overwhelming them all is the hope that they will do us proud
in the lives they move on to, and the hope that they will hold
onto things we have valued and tried to teach them.
In the book of Proverbs the father-figure gives his valedictory
address in these terms: “My child, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of
days and years of life and abundant welfare they will give
you.” (Proverbs 3:1–2, NRSV) But, more importantly, the
father longs for his son (and we long for the class of 21012)
to remember God: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and
do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways
acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do
not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away
from evil.” (Proverbs 3:5–7, NRSV)
As the Class of 2012 moves on, we hope that they will
remember the Lord. We hope that they will remember our
teaching in knowledge, skills and values. We hope that they
remember us and don’t lose the personal connection. And we
hope that their lives are filled with fulfilment and satisfaction.
But just like parents and their children, the move away is not
the end of the relationship. We always hope that some
contact will be retained. And perhaps even especially for
those who have resisted our values we want to hold out the
offer that it is never too late to come back and learn them
again. After all another picture of a father in the Bible is that
of the father running down the road to greet the prodigal
son (Luke 15). Sure, sometimes we leave home and do forget
God, do not acknowledge his ways, and are wise in our own
sight. But God still stands waiting as the loving father to rush
forward when we return to tell us that all is forgiven.
Class of 2012, our thoughts, prayers and hopes are with you.
Our God is with you. Farewell.
