e appropriate to use the term "spontaneous<br />

coal ignition" instead of "self-ignition<br />

of coal". Classifying hazards as natural<br />

can result in absence of measures to reduce<br />

probability of hazard occurrence, i.e.<br />

hazards which could be successfully reduced<br />

using the available and recognized<br />

methods of defense could be justified by<br />

"natural causes".<br />

4.1. CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING<br />

TO THE OCCURENCE<br />

MECHANISM<br />

4.1.1. Technological classification<br />

According to this criterion, the hazards<br />

are classified depending on phases of<br />

technological process in which they occur<br />

or on which they influence:<br />

1. hazards during development of deposits<br />

and preparation of rooms,<br />

2. hazards during excavation of coal,<br />

3. hazards during transportation of<br />

coal,<br />

4. hazards during the process of<br />

preparation, treatment or dressing<br />

of coal,<br />

5. hazards during the process of delivery<br />

of treated material,<br />

6. hazards during the process of electricity<br />

supply,<br />

7. hazards during the process of<br />

drainage or water supply.<br />

8. hazards during the process of functioning<br />

of ventilation system with<br />

all determinants.<br />

4.1.2. Classification according to<br />

severity<br />

1. Low-consequence hazards – low<br />

probability of occurrence of significant<br />

property damage or injury.<br />

Property damage is minor and the<br />

effects can be remedied using the<br />

company's internal resources, in the<br />

frame of regular working duties.<br />

2. Medium-consequence hazards –<br />

probability of occurrence of major<br />

property damage, mild or medium<br />

injuries and production stoppages<br />

that require external intervention,<br />

in order to re-establish production.<br />

3. High-consequence hazards – probability<br />

of occurrence of major<br />

property damage, serious injuries<br />

or fatalities and stoppages in production<br />

requiring reinvestment in<br />

order to remedy the effects.<br />

4.1.3. Classification of risks adopted<br />

in this paper<br />

This paper adopts a slightly adapted<br />

theoretical classification. Thus, the risks<br />

which can occur in the underground exploitation<br />

can be:<br />

- natural risks, and<br />

- anthropogenic risks occurring as the<br />

result of influence of man – workplace<br />

– equipment.<br />

This classification is empirical and of<br />

limited applicability; it is based on theoretical<br />

classification and supplemented by<br />

two inseparable factors (workplace and<br />

equipment), which significantly influence<br />

the complex working environment in<br />

theunderground mining.<br />
