ANALYSIS OF RISKS AND HAZARDS REGISTERED IN THE<br />
BROWN COAL MINE KAKANJ **<br />
Abstract<br />
Risk and crisis are inevitably tied to mining; this vocation is historically associated with risk, in<br />
everyday operations and functioning of the mine as a whole.<br />
The current legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in accordance with the applicable<br />
ISO standards, which themselves have not established models for strategic risk management in<br />
mining. Therefore, it is required to insist on establishment the applied models, their regulation<br />
through legal documents and introduction of a binding legal framework in this field. The worldwide<br />
experiences have shown that the introduction of strategic risk and crisis management led to<br />
the improvement of general safety conditions and reduction of incidents with harmful effects.<br />
This paper aims to point out that, in the given conditions, systematic risk and hazard management<br />
in mining is possible and necessary, regardless to a lack of established norms.<br />
Key words: risk, hazard, mining, risk management<br />

Throughout its multi-century existence,<br />
mining remained deeply rooted in all areas<br />

industrial revolution. From beginning of<br />
the 20th century, mining was the basis of<br />
economic development in all areas in<br />
which people excavated coal. Besides its<br />
economic significance, mining also had<br />
social influence in these areas. It can be<br />
said that it was the "mining civilization"<br />
hich manifested itself in all spheres of life:<br />
from language and architecture to subculture<br />
and sports. In order to survive, this<br />
mining culture had to "communicate" with<br />
the underground and stand in awe of it.<br />
Ignoring the signs of nature inside the pit<br />
could cost the lives of whole shift. Taking<br />
these implicit and unwritten rules lightly or<br />
disrespectfully was often paid by the highest<br />
costs. Thus, pits have been regarded<br />
with awe and their entrances carried the<br />
