A Word from TAPPI President Larry N. Montague
TAPPI prides itself on being a good value proposition – a sound investment with a positive return. Based on TAPPI’s
growing strength in numbers, it is clear our members agree.
During the last fiscal year, TAPPI saw more than 1,700 new members join our ranks, the
largest number in 11 years. That raises our membership to more than 7,100, which is also the
largest overall total in four years. Within those numbers may be some of the most exciting
news of all. Our student membership ranks increased by 34% during that same time frame –
much needed good news for an industry faced with a potential tsunami of retirements in the
coming years.
In addition to strong membership numbers, two of TAPPI’s major events also notched some significant
milestones. We blew past all registration records with approximately 1,500 attendees at PaperCon 2012, and
also sold out all exhibition space on the show floor. Already hard at work on PaperCon 2013, special new
features will include a Tissue360º Forum, RPTA Production-Technical Seminar, OpEx Reliability Workshop,
and co-location of the NETInc Conference. SuperCorrExpo, which occurs every four years in October, saw an
amazing 5,000 people attend, 47% of which were box makers or converters. SuperCorrExpo 2016 will be held in
Orlando, FL and 98,000 square feet has already been pre-sold for this greatly anticipated event.
As you peruse this year’s catalog, you will find within its pages an equally strong offering of publications, training
and educational offerings designed to help you get your job done faster, easier and more efficiently. It is a reliable
resource for on-the-job problems, technical questions and industry-related information. We encourage you to use it
as our members do, whenever and wherever possible.
My heartfelt thanks go to TAPPI’s Board of Directors,
staff and industry partners for making this year such
an amazing one. Thanks also to all 126 of TAPPI’s
Sustaining Members without whose support we would
be unable to fund TAPPI’s Student Summit, scholarship
programs, and other significant initiatives. Indeed, we
are indebted to all our thousands of members whose
dedicated support has always served as the foundation
for our success. No greater value proposition exists
for TAPPI.
Introduction to Biofuels
By: David M. Mousdale
This book explores key technologies, including
biotechnology, bioprocessing, and genetic
reprogramming of microorganisms. The author
examines the future of biofuels from a broader
perspective, addressing the economic, social,
and environmental issues crucial for studying
the sustainable development of bioenergy. Each
chapter begins with questions and provides the answers later
in the chapter as key informational points. Embedded Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) sections provide detailed
derivations and equations for a subset of topics that can be found
easily as buzzwords in popular media and on web sites. Together,
the STEM topics form a thread of essential technologies and a guide
to how researchers have established quantitative parameters that
are crucial to the ever-growing biofuels database.
Biomass to Biofuels:
Strategies for Global Industries
Edited by: Dr. Alain Vertès, Dr. Nasib Qureshi, Hideaki Yukawa, and
Hans P. Blaschek
Focusing on the key challenges that still
impede the realization of the billion-ton renewable
fuels vision, this book integrates technological
development and business development rationales
to highlight the key technological developments that
are necessary to industrialize biofuels on a global
scale. Technological issues addressed in this work
include fermentation and downstream processing technologies, as
compared to current industrial practice and process economics.
Business issues that provide the lens through which the technological
review is performed span the entire biofuel value chain, from financial
mechanisms to fund biotechnology start-ups in the biofuel arena up
to large green field manufacturing projects, to raw material farming,
collection and transport to the bioconversion plant, manufacturing,
product recovery, storage, and transport to the point of sale.
Emphasis has been placed throughout the book on providing a global
view that takes into account the intrinsic characteristics of various
biofuels markets from Brazil, the EU, the US, or Japan, to emerging
economies as agricultural development and biofuel development
appear undissociably linked.
The 360° Leader: Developing Your Influence from
Anywhere in the Organization
By: John C. Maxwell
Welcome to The 360° Leader. People who
desire to lead from the middle of organizations
face unique challenges. And they are often
held back by myths that prevent them from
developing their influence. Dr. Maxwell, one of
the globe’s most trusted leadership mentors,
debunks the myths, shows you how to overcome
the challenges, and teaches you the skills you need to become
a 360° leader.
If you have found yourself trying to lead from the middle of
the organization, as the vast majority of professionals do, then
you need Maxwell’s insights. You have a unique opportunity
to exercise influence in all directions-up (to the boss), across
(among your peers), and down (to those you lead).
The good news is that your influence is greater than you
know. Practice the disciplines of 360° leadership and the
opportunities will be endless... for your organization, for your
career, and for your life.
Running the Gauntlet
By: Jeffrey Hayzlett
Running The Gauntlet is a rough-and-tumble guide for running
and driving change through the business gauntlet. The book divides
into three parts that parallel the three parts of
change that every business leader must face:
Getting Ready, Getting Going, and Creating and
Sustaining Momentum. In each section, Hayzlett
shows business leaders and owners how to develop
the necessary mental, emotional, and (yes) physical
toughness they must have for smart, strategic, and
lasting change. Through this book, Hayzlett will force leaders to really
get up in their own businesses – to take them over from the inside and
drive change – gaining customers and profits in the process. Readers
will be able to efficiently assess what kind of change their business
needs and then summon the vision, courage, and passion to enact it.
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team:
A Leadership Fable
By: Patrick Lencioni
Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership
fable that is as enthralling and instructive
as his first two best-selling books, The Five
Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of
an Extraordinary Executive. This time, he turns
his keen intellect and storytelling power to the
fascinating, complex world of teams.
Kathryn Petersen, Decision Tech’s CEO, faces the ultimate
leadership crisis: Uniting a team in such disarray that it threatens
to bring down the entire company. Will she succeed? Will she be
fired? Will the company fail? Lencioni’s utterly gripping tale serves
as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage
as it does insight.
Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions
which go to the very heart of why teams -even the best ones -often
struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps
that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build
a cohesive, effective team. Just as with his other books, Lencioni
has written a compelling fable with a powerful yet deceptively
simple message for all those who strive to be exceptional team
leaders.
Nano Science and Nano Materials: Synthesis,
Manufacturing and Industry Impacts
By: Wei-Hong Zhong, Bin Li, Jo Anne Shatkin, Russell G. Maguire,
Vivian T. Dang, Gwen M. Gross, and Michael C. Richey
A comprehensive account of how nanomaterials are
synthesized and processed, this book presents the theory
and technology of introducing nano-based
materials as value-added elements into
product manufacturing. The book explains the
fundamentals of vapor, liquid, solid phase, and
biosystem-assisted nanoparticle syntheses,
with sufficient analysis of each method to
permit decisions on which is most productive,
energy efficient and safe. The text then
confronts the problems of scaling up from lab-based syntheses
to manufacturing and demonstrates how nanomaterials on
the shop floor require new protocols of quality assurance
and employee and environmental protection. The book
concludes with case studies of individuals who endeavored
to commercialize nanotechnologies for higher-volume
production.
Nanotechnology: Health and Environmental Risks
By: Jo Anne Shatkin
While reports on nanotechnology by research
and marketing firms as well as governmental
agencies are comprehensive and insightful, they
can often be tedious to read, expensive to procure,
and generally unknown to nonexperts interested
in this technology. Offering a reader-friendly
and affordable alternative to these options,
Nanotechnology: Health and Environmental Risks introduces risk
analysis as a tool for responsible environmental decision making
in nanotechnology development and provides examples of past,
present, and future technologies that demonstrate the need for
and benefits of evaluating the risks of nanotechnology.
After outlining the steps of risk analysis, the book examines
the opportunity costs inherent in current nanotechnology
development. It then introduces life cycle analysis, the
toxicology of nanoscale materials, and the known impacts of
specific nanoscale materials on people. The text also covers
environmental impacts and exposure, followed by chapters on
the state-of-the-art tools that adapt life cycle thinking into risk
analysis for nanotechnology. The final chapters describe current
practices for managing the hazards and risks of nanoscale
materials and explore the numerous international efforts that
address the risks, science, and policies of nanotechnology.
With full-color images and insights into key health and
environmental aspects of nanotechnology, this resource shows
how the risk analysis of nanotechnology can play an important
role in creating a sustainable future.
Web Machine Buying Guide - Designing For,
Installing and Maintaining Web Equipment
By: David R. Roisum
This one of a kind book, written by one of the
world’s leading web handling expert and experienced
machine designer along with a team of specialists,
offers a hands on step-by-step approach to investing
in, acquiring and starting up web machinery. It is
designed to assist plant-based personnel in the
costing and planning of major machinery investment
with a rigorous analysis of what needs to be done to acquire or
replace equipment with minimal expense and maximum longterm
efficiency, no matter what types of webs are being handled. The book
ranges over the entire spectrum of machine buying from dealing with
salespeople to the technical details of machinery design, contract
formulation, financing and maintenance. Numerous case studies
NEW!
Creating Value Through Packaging - Unlocking a
New Business and Management Strategy
By: Jim Peters, Brian Higgins and Michael Richmond
This book fills a deep need in the packaging
industry—a methodical guide to managing
packaging that also demonstrates how packaging,
considered in a total context, benefits all phases
of a business and its customers. Starting from the
premise that packaging is implicated in a network of
material, social, economic and psychological factors,
the book offers a comprehensive strategy highlighting packaging’s
value-adding roles in creating successful products and enhancing
the experience of customers—B2B as well as consumers. But the
book’s practical applications are deeper. By illuminating the multiple
relationships of packaging to organizations and cultural trends and
linking them to one another and to business drivers, the book offers a
useful new way to think about packaging, one that includes and goes
beyond cost analysis to demonstrate how packaging is a corporate
asset needed to innovate and increase profits. Methods in the book
are shown to apply to a wide range of choices managers must make.
The book covers all the standard operating procedures of packaging
development, which, along with numerous flow charts, formulas and
graphics, are designed to improve operations, planning, and sales.
Winding Machines: Mechanics and Measurements
By: David R. Roisum, Ph. D
Winding Machines: Mechanics and Measurements is the definitive
book on the science of winding written by noted experts Dr. David
Roisum and Dr. JK Good. This three-part book (with supplemental
CD-ROM) describes the various classes and arrangements of
winding machinery commonly found in the web industries including
discussion of controls and defects; describes how roll stresses and
roll defects can be predicted by mathematical models and what
18 Become a TAPPI Member • www.tappi.org/join • +1 770 446-1400
factors are important; and discusses almost every method for
measuring and evaluating wound roll quality. The book describes
how and why many wound roll defects occur. In more than a few
cases, it even describes when defects occur based on winding
models that have matured to the point of trustworthy application. In
these cases we have science at its best, a predictive tool. A CD with an
easy-to-run winding model is included with every book. However, one
need not be a scientist to appreciate and use this text. Much of it is
written in everyday language describing the machines we work with,
the defects we see and the many measures of roll quality. It is a book
that most plants with a winding department would want to have.
Paper Machine Quality Control Systems
Volume 1: Measurement
By: the Quality Control Systems Education Common Interest Group
of the Process Control Division
This book describes in detail the measurement
technology used in Quality Controls Systems
(QCS). Individual chapters are devoted to the
five most prevalent QCS measurements (Basis
Weight, Moisture, Caliper, Ash and Color) in the
paper industry. Each of these chapters covers the
physical principles involved in each measurement,
sensor designs, various methods of implementation and influence
factors. A somewhat lighter coverage is given to ten other QCS
measurements that do not have such a broad installation base.
Common issues that impact all sensors are explained, including
how sensor performance is measured and reported, the impact
of scanning process, filtering, scanner designs and construction,
and sensor calibration and correlation. Statistical methods are
covered in depth from discrete one-dimensional variability to
multi-dimensional variability. Guidance is provided for using these
statistical methods to locate the sources of variability in the paper
process.
Troubleshooting in the Papermaking Process
By: Jerome M. Gess and Paul H. Wilson
This book takes the reader through the process
of making paper, pointing out where interruptions
can occur and where elements which are added
to the system can cause problems in that part or
subsequent parts of the papermaking process. The
aim of this book is to give papermakers and those
involved in the papermaking process the information
required to allow them to understand how to track down and solve
problems at their source rather than where the problems surface.
Size Estimation Chart (transparency)
Developed from and based on the TAPPI Dirt Estimation Chart,
this transparency is used to measure the size of spots, defects,
or inclusions over the range of 0.02 to 5.00 square millimeters in
paper and other industrial materials such as textiles or plastics.
Instructions for use of this transparency are outlined in TAPPI
Test Method T 564. The chart can be used in a large number of
applications where there is a need to estimate a size (area) by
way of a direct comparison to a known area disk or rectangle.
Applications may include, but are not limited to, the measurement
of visible ink spatter on printed surfaces, the estimation of the
growth rate of bio-colonies, air inclusions in transparent plastic
castings and films, etc. The chart must NOT be used to estimate
the equivalent black area (EBA) of dirt or other colored specks (use
the TAPPI Dirt Estimation Chart in conjunction with T 213 or T 437
or use image analysis, T 563, for EBA measurement). The charts
are manufactured from an original negative produced on DuPont
CRR film. A rapid-access processor using Kodak/Fujifilm chemistry
is used for processing the transparencies. Each film positive is
produced on Kodak Contact 2000 film, using a NuArc contacting
frame with an NuArc light source and NuArc light integrator which
controls the exposure. The cards are exposed to 20 units of light.
To measure the accuracy of the end product, each transparency
is measured by looking at the .20 dot with a 100-power magnifier
that has a reticle (scale), incremented in 5/10,000’s of a millimeter,
on the lens. The dots on the chart are correct within an average
10% or 0.005 square millimeters, whichever is the larger.
Calibrated Size Estimation Chart (transparency)
What makes a Calibrated Size Estimation Chart so special?
• These charts are ideal for quality assurance processes that
require more exact measurement.
• Each chart has 23 dots that are calibrated using both a
microscope and the industry measurement standard (NIST
traceable reticule). It has been prepared with consistency and
precision.
• Each Calibrated SEC comes with its own data sheet that provides
an actual dot measurement area (expressed in squared mm) to
correspond with the increments (dots) on the chart.
• Each Calibrated SEC is individually prepared and bears a tamper
evident security hologram with its own serial number to assure
authenticity to users.
What it can mean for you:
• You no longer have to calibrate your own charts. You can save
time and effort!
Dirt Estimation Chart
TAPPI’s Dirt Chart cards are manufactured from an original
negative produced on DuPont CRR film and estimate the equivalent
black area (EBA) of dirt or other colored specks. The cards are
processed on a rapid-access processor using Kodak/Fujifilm
chemistry. Each card is produced on photographic paper via
a contacting frame with an NuArc light source and NuArc light
integrator which controls the specific exposure designated for
accuracy and consistency. Cards are exposed to 20 units of light.
To ensure the accuracy of the charts, each piece is measured by
examining the 2.0 dot with a 100 x magnifier that has a reticle (scale)
incremented in 5/10,000mm, on the lens. Card Stock. This opaque
chart is to be used with TAPPI Test Methods T 213, T 437, and T 537.
