SECRETARY OF THE ARMY RECOGNIZES
FORT BRAGG FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is the winner of the
first Secretary of the Army Sustainability Award.
Fort Bragg piloted the first installation sustainability
program for the Army 8 years ago. Since then, it
has served as a blueprint for the Army Strategy for
the Environment and has set the bar for the Army’s
sustainability values.
The goal of sustainability is to meet the Army’s
current and future needs while improving its ability
to organize, equip, train, and deploy Soldiers.
ARMY STUDENTS POST WAR STORIES
ON INTERNET DISCUSSION BOARDS
As part of a broader effort to make Army officers
better strategic communicators, the Army Command
and General Staff College (CGSC) Department of
Military History is requiring students to post their
war stories to a historical Internet discussion board.
The writing assignment, which is part of the program,
Sharing Our Story with the Nation, stems from
a goal set by the commander of the Combined Arms
Center, Lieutenant General William Caldwell, to “initiate
opportunities for officers to engage the Nation and
share their stories through media engagements and
community outreach activities.” The program includes
community outreach activities, media interviews, and
web-based events comprised of recognized blog sites.
(These sites are public forums established by the military
history department and edited by the faculty.)
For a preview of the assignments, visit http://interwar.livejournal.com
on the World Wide Web. It is
one of six sites hosting CGSC student papers.
Beyond the Horizon, a U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM)
humanitarian exercise that provides infrastructure renovation and basic
medical and dental care to rural parts of Latin American and Caribbean
countries, tested Joint Task Force Bravo’s ability to support forwarddeployed
troops over 3 months at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras. Nearly
2,100 additional service personnel rotated through the base from April
to June, requiring logisticians there to provide tents, customs clearance
for exercise materials and equipment, and line-hauling for 50 vehicles
and nearly 140 pieces of equipment. The exercise also required the
provision of more than 6,600 field ration meals, 9,500 bottles of water,
8,000 gallons of fuel, and numerous medical and dental supplies. Joint
Task Force Bravo is an element of SOUTHCOM based in Honduras.
Missoula, Montana, were some of the 350 service members in Honduras
for the exercise, where they helped to revitalize a local school.
