[The cause of the Moon’s eclipse]<br />

That of the Moon by the diametrical interposition of the body of the earth<br />

between the Sun and the Moon, thereby depriving her of the borrowed light she<br />

receives of the Sun. And this is ever upon the opposition of the luminaries, or<br />

vulgarly at the Full Moon. And truly this defect of the luminaries would happen<br />

every change and full, did not the Moon sometimes deviate from the ecliptic<br />

line five degrees northward as also sometimes again as far southward, and<br />

therefore cannot so directly meet with the conjunction and opposition of the<br />

Sun who ever moves in the ecliptic line or just under it.<br />
