Welcome Letter
Welcome to the 2009 Doing Good and Doing Well Conference!
Dear Conference Guests,
Thank you for joining us at the 2009 Doing Good and Doing Well Conference. On behalf of IESE
Business School, IESE’s Responsible Business Club, and Net Impact, we would like to welcome
you to Barcelona.
The Doing Good and Doing Well conference was a result of the labors of two forward-thinking IESE
graduate business students, Heather Blahnik and Emma Coles, in 2004. Over the past six years,
the conference has grown dramatically and has proved to hundreds of socially-minded graduate
business students and professionals that doing good and doing well are not mutually exclusive.
This year, IESE Business School has partnered with Net Impact to bring this exciting event to an
even larger audience.
In light of recent events in the global economy, this year’s conference theme is Doing Good When
We Are Not Doing So Well - Creating Sustainable Value in a Downturn. Our speakers will discuss
the tough decisions leaders are facing during this economic downturn and explore the business
case for continued commitment to social and environmental responsible practices.
We hope that this conference will spark discussion and debate regarding the future of responsible
business and that you will leave feeling equipped and inspired to do well in any economy.
Enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Curran Liz Maw
Healthcare Delivery – How to Achieve the Biggest Impact?
Room: G302 (South Campus)
A 1994 World Bank study found that 88 cents of every dollar of public expenditure on medication is lost to
fifteen years since this study. This panel will explore how we can improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery.
Representatives from various backgrounds and geographies will take on this challenging topic. They will discuss
scalability of projects and drug affordability for the poor. Furthermore, they will touch upon the role publicpartnerships
Beyond the Mission Statement: Tools for Achieving Social Benefits through For-Profit
Access to capital is a critical driver for economic growth and social development. Private equity firms are
increasing their investment in emerging markets, filling the void in which development capital was previously
unavailable. In their work, some private equity firms are deviating from the standard investment model and
returns. These firms go beyond the mission statement by taking into account the social benefits of projects. This
panel will explore the deal structure process, management of capital and measuring of performance. Join our
panel of experts to compare and contrast the standard private equity methods with for-profit social investment
Career Forum / Trade Fair
Through the Career Forum, the DGDW conference gives the opportunity to those interested in developing a career in a
range of areas related to responsible business to meet companies and organizations who are actively looking or have at
some time hired MBA students. Organizations cover a broad range of areas including renewable energy, social investment,
social entrepreneurship, microfinance, development, sustainability, consulting and CSR to name a few.
This year we have also introduced a new initiative, the Trade Fair, to allow all participants to learn more about select
organizations participating in the conference. The Trade Fair offers a great opportunity for participants to learn about an
organization and for them to showcase the organization and distribute materials, for example a sustainability report, critical
findings etc while creating a two-way network in the industry. It will run at the same time as the Career Forum.
There will be three types of companies:
1. Companies that are hiring MBAs or business professionals for full time positions after 1 May, 2009.
Noel de Villiers - Founder of Open Africa and Ashoka Fellow
Barbara Wagner – Senior Consultant, Dalberg
Noel is an Ashoka fellow since 2006. With the conviction that Africa’s greatest assets are its people,
its cultural heritage, and its natural resources, Noel de Villiers is creating a continent-wide network of
community-owned and operated tourism routes that leverage these resources to create economic and
social development opportunities for African rural areas, towns, and cities. Through his organization,
Open Africa, Noel is building a pan-African network of urban and rural tourism routes that are locally
owned and managed, but marketed internationally. The vision behind this network is to create economic
and social opportunities by harnessing the growing potential of tourism in Africa for marginalized
communities. He is putting control of this potential into the hands of local communities by working with
them to identify, promote, and manage their own cultural and natural assets. These efforts create new
businesses, preserve cultural heritage, and foster community pride of civic cooperation and leadership
in a new generation. Noel’s model encourages marginalized local communities to form their own
businesses to serve the tourism market, thereby affording them entry to a previously unreachable
economic system. Through creative online marketing and industry partnerships, these enterprises
are brought to a new level of quality, marketability and potential. The shared effort of developing and
sustaining not just individual enterprises but linked tourist routes leads to infrastructure development,
increased political participation, and links to the international community. Open Africa also creates
a platform for community leaders to champion a new path of growth and development for their
communities.
Barbara Wagner has worked extensively on strategy projects in the areas of organization, change
management and policy. At Dalberg, Barbara has advised a number of UN Agencies – most recently
through her work on “Delivering as One”, where she helped selected countries identify how the United
Nations system in the country could work more coherently and effectively in the areas of development,
humanitarian assistance and the environment. Prior to joining Dalberg, Barbara worked with McKinsey
& Company, where she advised leading multinational corporations and multilateral organizations on
strategy, operations management and finance. Barbara holds a Master of Science in Economics from
Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, Spain and a graduate degree in International Business
