Interest in the BAN concept first arose in Italy in 1997. It emerged from a few Business
Innovation Centres in Northern Italy, more precisely in Valle d’Aosta and Lombardia.
Several regional BANs were set up in 1999, as well as IBAN, the national association created
to foster the development of BANs in all Italian regions and to federate their activities.
