2002-03 IHSAA Football State Tournament Series
State Finals Summary
Ben Davis, Roncalli, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers and Southwood each earned their respective
class state championships in the 30 th Annual IHSAA Football State Finals on November 29-30, 2002 at the RCA Dome in
Indianapolis.
A total of 309 schools and 17,466 student-athletes were entered into the state tournament at the sectional level.
Class 5A
Ben Davis Collects Seventh State Championship
Ben Davis ran up a Class 5A record 434 yards of offense and snared its third state championship in four years rolling to a
convincing 31-7 victory over previously unbeaten Fort Wayne Snider for the Class 5A title.
The Giants’ victory was their state record seventh title, the most in tournament history. Each championship – 1987, 1988,
1990, 1991, 1999, 2001 and 2002 – has come in Class 5A and under the direction of coach Dick Dullaghan. For Dullaghan, it
was his 11 th appearance in a championship game having won eight of those games – also a best in the sport’s coaching ranks.
After battling through a scoreless first quarter, the Giants (12-3) broke through in a big way scoring touchdowns on all three of
its second quarter possessions.
Quarterback Jon Polston found Brian Faires for a nine yard touchdown for the first score. Running back Jermell Whorton then
scored on runs of five yards and one yard, the latter just 0:23 before halftime.
The lead ballooned to 31-0 on Faires’ 16 yard run and Casey Huffman’s 41 yard field goal late in the third quarter before
Snider tallied its first score of the game.
Aaron Lane’s nine yard run with 11:31 to go in the game finished off a quick four play, 85 yard drive that took only 0:50 off the
clock.
One of Polston’s favorite targets was Zach Rainey who hauled in 10 receptions for 175 yards, both Class 5A game records.
Polston had a stellar game connecting on 14 of his 17 passes for 212 yards and a score. Whorton finished with 161 yards on 27
carries. Justin Wynn led Snider with six receptions for 90 yards and Lorenzo Wims had 10 tackles.
Russ Isaacs was the Snider coach and guided the Panthers (13-1) back to the state finals for the first time since their
unbeaten championship season of 1992, a 24-21 victory over Ben Davis.
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee awarded the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award in Class 5A football to
Marcus Heminger of Fort Wayne’s Snider High School.
The award is annually presented in each classification of the football state finals to the senior player best representing
excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of Phil N. Eskew, the
IHSAA’s third commissioner from 1962-1976.
Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Snider High School in the name of
Marcus Heminger.
Class 4A
Roncalli Rallies Past Bishop Dwenger For Class 4A Title
Sophomore Tim Sergi scored from one yard out with 1:09 left in the game and followed up with the two-point conversion to
help Roncalli rally past Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, 24-21, in a thrilling conclusion to the Class 4A state championship game.
The Rebels defense held on downs in the final minute and secured Roncalli’s sixth state championship and its first in Class
4A.
Sergi, a starting defensive back, entered the game on the offensive side of the ball in place of star running back Marcus
Nalley who was injured late in the third quarter. Nalley finished the game with 64 yards on 18 carries, while Sergi gained 35
yards on eight rushes.
Bruce Scifres guided the 10-4 Rebels as he has in the school’s four previous championship campaigns.
Sergi’s score capped a 14-point fourth quarter that also saw Nick Johnson score on a four yard carry to pull Roncalli within
21-16. Dwenger made a great defensive stop on the two-point conversion attempt holding Johnson short of the goal line that
would have pulled Roncalli within a field goal.
Bishop Dwenger (13-2), also making its first appearance in the 4A title game, seemingly had the game under control when it
took a 21-10 lead on Dan Kimes’ one yard run with 9:33 left to go in the game.
After the Rebels took a 10-0 lead on Jake McCoy’s 17 yard reception from Johnson in the first quarter and Kevin Trulock’s 36
yard field goal in the second quarter, Dwenger countered with a touchdown before halftime.

Kimes ran in a four yarder with 1:48 left and the point after made it 10-7 at the break. In the third quarter, Kimes found Matt
Talarico for a six yard score at the 8:41 mark to give Dwenger its first lead at 14-10.
Kimes finished the game with 92 yards on the ground for Dwenger and passed for 105 yards completing eight of 14 passes
and a touchdown for the Saints. Johnson finished with 75 yards completing 10 of 16 passes and a score for Roncalli.
The 2002 Class 4A Phil N. Eskew Mental Award was presented to Tyler Warner of Roncalli High School. Farm Bureau
Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a check for $1,000.00 to Roncalli High School in the name of Tyler
Warner.
Class 3A
Bishop Chatard Repeats As State Champion
Indianapolis Bishop Chatard jumped out to a 17-0 first half lead and never looked back in repeating as Class 3A state
champion with its 31-12 victory over Andrean.
It was a rematch of last year’s title game and, unlike previous rem atches in tournament history, the defending state champion
was victorious. In the three previous rematches, the champion fell the second time around. Chatard defeated Andrean, 3-0, in
the lowest scoring championship game in tournament history one year ago.
With the victory, the 15-0 Trojans of coach Tom Dilley won the school’s sixth state championship in football. Chatard has
never lost a championship game.
Bishop Chatard scored on its first two possessions to take a 10-0 first quarter lead on Dray Mason’s 37 yard run and Aaron
Charles’ 25 yard field goal. Bart Early’s eight yard run at 8:38 of the second quarter extended the lead before Andrean finally got
on the board.
A 13 yard run by Roco Marcinak with 4:49 remaining before halftime made it 17-6, but the kick for the extra point missed.
Chatard responded with another scoring drive capped by Bart Early’s two-yard run with 0:46 left to go for a 24-6 halftime lead.
Trojan quarterback Mike Dury scored on a one yard keeper with 1:41 left in the third quarter and Andrean’s Tyler Harangody
caught a six yard pass from quarterback Aaron Babb with 1:43 left in the game for the only two scores of the second half.
First year Andrean coach Wally McCormack guided the 59ers (13-2) to its third championship game, but as in both of its
previous appearances, they fell to Chatard for all the marbles.
Michael Dury of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School was named winner of the Class 3A Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude
Award, presented to an outstanding senior participant in the football state tournament. A check for $1,000.00 was presented by
Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, to Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School in the name of Michael
Dury.
Class 2A
Bishop Luers Wins Third Title in Four Years
Fort Wayne Bishop Luers got a late touchdown and secured its third Class 2A state championship in four years following a
36-30 victory over Southridge.
Brian Kurtz picked up teammate Jhormy Martinez’s fumble at the Southridge 28 yard line and carried it in to the endzone for
the clincher with 2:28 left in the game to put Luers up 36-27. Southridge added a late field goal for the final margin.
With the victory, defending state champion Luers (12-3) collected its sixth state championship in football. All have come in
Class 2A and the latter five under coach Matt Lindsay.
Southridge (12-3), coached by Brad Hanner, scored with 5:24 to go in the fourth quarter to pull within two points at 29-27 on
Matt Terwiske’s one yard run. The two-point conversion that would have tied the game failed.
Leading 19-12 at halftime, Luers seemingly broke the game open with a pair of third quarter scores less than two minutes
apart. Jason Egts connected on a 25 yard field goal at the 7:30 mark and after Jason Harless intercepted a Brian Yost pass at
the Southridge 39, Luers quarterback Eric Smith hit Brandon Davis on the ensuing play for a 29-12 lead with 5:35 left.
Southridge responded with 15 unanswered points to get back into it. Matt Boeglin drilled a 22 yard field goal at 10:50 of the
fourth quarter and after the Knights recovered the on-sides kick, Yost found Brett Bueltel for a 34 yard strike at the 9:56 mark.
Again the two point conversion failed. Those two scores preceeded Terwiske’s one yard plunge.
Martinez scored twice for Luers, including his two-yard carry with :44 left before halftime. The two-point attempt was snuffed
out by Southridge and gave the Knights a 19-12 lead heading to the lockerroom. Martinez rushed for 148 yards in a Class 2A
record 32 carries.
Yost completed 10 of his 24 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown for Southridge. His counterpart, Smith, threw for 142
yards on 6 of 12 passing and three touchdowns. He was intercepted twice.

Martinez scored Luers’ first touchdown, a 16 yard reception from Smith to put the Knights on top, 7-6. Brad Ohanian then
burst through the Luers line for a 5-yard score with 5:30 before half to put the Raiders back on top, 12-6. The two-point
conversion failed.
Brett Bueltel of Southridge High School was named winner of the 2002 Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A
football. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a check for $1,000.00 to Southridge High School in
the name of Brett Bueltel.
Class A
Late Field Goal Lands First State Title For Southwood
Senior Nick Ehret drilled a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the game and helped Southwood capture a 17-14 victory over
South Putnam in the IHSAA Class A state championship game.
Ehret’s third field goal of the year set a Class A state record (37 yards was the previous best) and capped a second half rally
to give Southwood its first state title in school history. The Knights were the 1990 Class A runner-up.
Bryant Paul gained 119 yards in 17 carries for Southwood. Adam Flora carried for 102 yards in 19 attempts for South Putnam.
The Knights trailed 14-0 at the half as three first half turnovers kept them from getting anything going offensively. South
Putnam picked off Jarrod McKee twice and recovered a fumble.
The Knights got on the board on a pair of three-play, third quarter scoring drives. McKee’s 22 yard end around the right side
with 7:32 left got Southwood on the board before tying the game on their next possession. After forcing South Putnam to punt
the ball away, Ehret dashed through the defense on his way to a 45-yard score at the 3:50 mark.
Kole Ames, who finished 6-11 for 101 yards through the air, scored on a one-yard carry with 8:35 left in the first quarter and
Flora added an eight yard run with 1:07 left in the first for South Putnam’s pair of touchdowns.
Third year coach Terry Siddall guided the 13-1 Knights in this campaign. Mark Wildman, in his 18 th year at South Putnam, led
the Eagles to a 12-3 mark. South Putnam was the 1986 Class A state champion.
The 2002 Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award, presented to an outstanding senior participant in football, was awarded to
Kole Ames of South Putnam High School. Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate sponsor, presented a check for
$1,000.00 to South Putnam High School in the name of Kole Ames.
