Since 1995, the Heron Lake 

Watershed District, with offices 

in Heron Lake, has supported an 

internship program with the help 

of the North Heron Lake Game 

Producers Association and the 

Minnesota Department of Natural 

Resources. 

That program has been able 

to offer special internships to two 

high school or college-age students 

each year since, providing them 

with practical hands-on experience 

involving a wide variety of water, 

wildlife and land conservation 

practices. 

This year’s two summer interns 

are Megan Stegmeir from North 

Branch and Anthony Johnson

The B&S Diner in Dunnell is a hometown 

favorite with a regional following. 

Located right on Main Street in Dunnell — a 

small but proud farming community just east 

of Jackson — the diner draws everyone from 

9 a.m. regulars for coffee and freshly baked 

caramel rolls to Friday night out-of-towners for 

occasional prime rib and jumbo shrimp supper 

specials. 

Owners and operators Kerry Benson and 

Richard Skalsky say they enjoy catering to both 

crowds and everyone in between. 

“The folks here, they support their diner,” 

Benson, a former employee of the diner when it 

was called Mary’s Café, said. “They want a diner 

here and they show us that.” 

Skalsky, a Jackson native who has spent time 

in Faribault and Oklahoma City, agreed, adding 

that word is spreading. 

“Our customer base is certainly expanding,” 

he said. “We have a lot of people drive quite a 

ways to get here for a meal or cup of coffee and 

roll and we are grateful for that.” 

But it was the hometown atmosphere 

and welcoming spirit of the locals that drew 

Benson and Skalsky to the Dunnell diner. That 

atmosphere and spirit are reflected on the walls 

of the B&S diner in historical photographs of the 

streets of Dunnell and in the faces of the folks 

who come in for a bite and get greeted by name. 

“It’s a nice, hometown, friendly atmosphere,” 

Skalsky said. “It’s like everybody knows everybody 

and we all just get along real well.”

Doors open at 6 a.m. Monday through 

Saturday and there’s usually folks waiting at the 

door, Benson said. 

“There’s the early crowd and then the 9 a.m. 

crowd,” she said. 

The diner’s signature breakfast dishes are two 

types of hashbrown omelets — one with ham 

and mushrooms, the other with taco fixings, 

dubbed a “Mexican hashbrown omelet.” 

“We really introduced the hashbrown omelet 

here,” Skalsky said, adding it quickly became a 

breakfast-time favorite. 

“You lay hashbrowns down on the griddle, 

scramble eggs and put over it and then add the 

toppings,” Benson said. “You make it nice and 

crispy and fold it all in. Everything’s inside the 

hashbrowns.” 

While breakfast is the meal of the day for many 

at the B&S Diner, Benson and Skalsky say they 

draw their largest crowds at lunch time. Diner 

hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through 

Saturday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday — except 

those nights when Benson and Skalsky stay open 

late for supper specials — though it’s nothing 

to leave the diner in the hands of the local card 

players if the game runs long, Benson said. 

“Every Tuesday, there’s a card club and the 

ladies play 500,” she said. “If they’re still going 

after we finish up, they just leave the money in 

the drawer and lock up after themselves. Unless 

I get pulled into the game too.” 

“I’ve even sat in once or twice,” Skalsky said. 

“That’s the whole meaning of this. It’s an honest, 

friendly atmosphere and we love that.”

with the DNR, taking water 

samples for water quality, testing

and the outlet to Heron Lake, 

submitting bi-monthly activity 

reports, compiling a detailed 

report of the activities and projects 

they have completed along with a 

photographic record of each and 

compiling a daily journal of all 

their work activities. 

Additionally, they have 

conducted sago pondweed 

studies on Heron and Duck lakes, 

conducted vegetative transects 

with the Heron Lake and DNR 

staff and have been contacting 

landowners regarding their best 

management practices via site 

inspections of their conservation 

projects for compliance and 

they have both been installing 

promotional signs at those same 

locales. 

The two interns are also 

required to provide articles to the 

district’s newsletter periodically, 

answer the telephone and are 

to provide an overview of their 

summer activities evaluating 

themselves and the program 

as well as the people they have 

worked in partnership with to the 

August board meeting of both the 

Heron Lake Watershed District 

and the North Heron Lake Game 

Producers Association. 

“We also helped the Natural 

Resources Conservation Service 

plant 7,000 trees on a farm north 

of Worthington; that was a big 

project,” Johnson said. “And we

“I like the independence this 

internship has offered me,” Johnson 

said. “We work on our own quite a bit.” 

“Being on our own and the variety 

of this job where we don’t do the same 

thing every day is what I like in this 

internship,” Stegmeir said. “That and 

being outside most of the time.” 

The hard part of what they have done 

to date that they both agreed on was the 

tillage crop residue sampling. 

“We did that during the really wet 

days earlier this spring and ended up 

having to wade through the mud,” 

Johnson said. “It was difficult going and 

we had to take three samples of each 

field.” 

The HLWD internship normally runs 

until the end of August, but for Johnson it will end on 

Aug. 15, as he has to head off to school in Kentucky 

then. Stegmeir’s intern experience may last a bit 

longer than that, but will probably end around that 

date as well. 

“I’ve learned a lot already,” Stegmeir said. “I’ve 

learned a lot about the land and what’s out there for 

water quality and conservation practices.” 

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with the DNR 

and see what that is like and what they do,” Johnson 

said. “That has helped guide me as to what I might do

Jackson and Murray counties. 

Both Stegmeir and Johnson agreed that the people 

they have had the opportunity to learn from such as 

Heron Lake Watershed District Administrator Jan Voit 

and NRCS Watershed Technician Ross 

Behrends have both been excellent. 

“I think that the goose banding and 

being able to get around this area and 

be able to look at all the wildlife has 

been the best part of my internship so 

far,” Stegmeir said. 

Johnson concurred with that 

assessment. 

“I had no idea what all was involved 

with this internship and the importance 

of what we are doing here as it relates to 

Heron Lake,” Johnson said. “Everything 

north of Heron Lake that is in its 

watershed affects it.” 

“I’ve learned that what we do here is 

pretty important,” Stegmeir said. “More 

important than I first realized when it 

comes to the Heron Lake area.” 

Megan Stegmeir and Anthony Johnson, the 

two summer interns with the Heron Lake 

Watershed District, took water samples from 

Jack Creek and sent them to New Ulm to a lab 

for testing. The interns repeat the sampling 

each week at three different locations as part 

of water quality monitoring for the Heron 

Lake watershed.

Farmers have used various 

conservation tillage systems in 

their operations for many years. 

One of the conservation tillage 

systems that is relatively “new” 

is the strip-till system, which is 

generally done in the fall but can 

be done in the spring. 

Conservation tillage is defined 

as tillage systems that leave at least 

30 percent residue cover on the soil 

surface after planting. 

Studies have shown that reduced 

tillage systems have benefits other 

than soil conservation, such 

as increased water infiltration, 

increased or sustained organic 

matter content, increased waterholding 

capacity, and continued 

long-term productivity of the 

soil. They also require less capital 

investment in equipment and 

fewer field passes, which reduces 

the amount of labor and fuel used. 

Strip-tillage creates a raised berm 

by tilling a zone 5 to 9 inches deep 

and 6 to 10 inches wide matched 

to the row-spacing of the planter. 

This leaves the soil and residue 

undisturbed between the tilled 

zones. The tilled area is prepared 

with mole fertilizer knives with 

opening coulter and berm-shaping 

disks, to combinations of fluted 

coulters, to a large, toothed disk. 

Fertilizer P and K can be injected 

directly into the strip at the time of 

strip tillage. Corn is planted into 

the tilled residue free strip without 

any secondary spring tillage. 

Ian Cunningham who farms 

south of Pipestone, has been 

doing strip-till since about 2000. 

Cunningham said they had 

been doing conservation tillage 

practices since 1968. 

“In 1968 we quit mold-board 

plowing and at the time I was still 

pretty young,” he said. “My dad 

was interested in conservation 

tillage. In fact, my grandfather 

was one of the first soil and water 

(conservation) board members in 

Pipestone County.” He commented 

that even though his dad or uncle 

didn’t serve on the board they were 

always interested in conservation 

and even when they were still 

plowing they would plow on the 

contour. 

Through the years Cunningham 

has continued these practices and 

has been a board member of the 

Pipestone County Soil and Water 

Conservation District for the past 

10 years, and he recently filed for 

another term. 

In the early 1980s Cunningham 

started to use a ridge-till system 

and continued up until about 

2000.

me because ‘I wasted my youth on 

a cultivator’ because when we were 

doing four-row ridge-tilling it was 

lots of hours on the cultivator,” he 

said. “I was looking for something 

better.”While Cunningham drills 

his own beans, (having bought 

his own drill in 1995), he hires 

someone to do the strip-till for 

him. 

“I hire it done because I don’t 

have a tractor big enough to pull 

a 12-row strip till implement,” he 

said. “I also don’t have enough acres 

to justify owning the machine.”

actual strip-tillage is something 

that Simplot also does, according

that it doesn’t work everywhere 

all the time but the majority of the 

guys trying it like it.

coincided with his going to 30-inch 

rows when he plants instead of 

the 36-inch rows he used to plant.

the upside of strip-till is that he 

is getting the benefit of starter 

fertilizer without slowing the 

planting operation down in the 

spring. All of the fertilizer is placed

he said. “If there is an area of the 

field that is too wet, I can skip over 

it and come back because my rows 

are all laid out.” 

The person who does the strip-till 

for Cunningham has an auto-steer, 

auto-track system on his tractor 

but Cunningham commented that 

he hasn’t invested in any of that 

because it is pretty easy to follow 

the ridges or strips when planting. 

Cunningham said that over the 

years he has learned some do’s and 

don’ts of strip-tillage. An example 

is with corn-on-corn. He said that 

farmers using this method must 

make sure to combine the corn in 

the right direction. As as long as 

the strip-till machine is going the 

same way as the combine it won’t 

plug up. 

Another thing he does is to try 

and keep the tractors out of the 

field to lessen any compaction that 

may occur. He explained that the 

only time they use a grain cart to 

catch on the go is when they can’t 

make it back from the other end. 

This way they aren’t driving all over 

the field. 

Although there are many benefits 

to strip-tillage, Cunningham 

mentioned one risk is if the striptill 

doesn’t get done in the fall, and 

in that case, he would be in the 

same boat as everyone else. 

Cunningham feels his yields 

with strip-tillage are comparable 

to other methods. 

“There may be certain conditions 

that conventional tillage may outyield 

it,” he said. “But from a profit 

standpoint, I think there are times, 

like last summer, when my soil was 

more protected by residue and we 

withstood the dry weather better 

than some who did conventional 

tillage.” 

The residue left on the field helps 

build up soil organic matter and by 

the end of June or early July a lot 

of the residue has been eaten by 

earthworms and taken down into 

their tunnels and this helps aerate 

the soil. 

Cunningham said he had some 

of his soil tested last fall and 

it showed good percentage of 

organic matter content, and it has 

taken a long time to get it built up 

to its current level. 

“My organic matter is there to 

improve the soil water filtration 

and then the nutrients are still 

breaking down at a slower rate,” he 

said. “So late season, the corn crop 

is getting nutrients from matter 

that in a conventional tillage 

situation will have gotten stirred 

up and used earlier.” 

He feels his soil structure is much 

better also because the roots can 

penetrate because they are driving 

on it less and they are damaging it 

less than conventional tillage. 

“I believe that it takes years to 

realize the advantage because you 

can’t do tillage for 120 years and 

then expect to start strip-till this 

year and get all the benefits of it.” 

Cunningham said. “I think each 

year I stay in the strip-till, no-till 

rotation, the soil is getting to be 

in better and better shape and I 

could mess that up by doing some 

tillage.”
