BEFORE READING/SET PURPOSES
Phonics 1
Display the cover of the book, read the title, and point out the name of the author/illustrator.
Ask students to name the animal shown on the cover, and invite them to share what
they know about bats.
Take a picture walk through several spreads. Ask: Who do you think this book is about?
Where does it take place? What do you think will happen to the baby bat?
DURING READING
How does Stellaluna end up in the bird nest? (Her mother drops her when she is trying to
escape from the owl.)
Why is Mama Bird angry with Stellaluna? (Mama doesn’t like the things that Stellaluna is
teaching the baby birds.)
How does Stellaluna’s mother find her? (Other bats find her when she is hanging by her thumbs.)
Why does Stellaluna go back to the bird nest the next day? (She wants the birds to meet
her bat family.)
AFTER READING/RETURN TO PURPOSES
How do you think Stellaluna felt when she was living in the bird nest? (Possible answer:
She was frustrated because she could not do the same things that the birds could do.)
What did the animals learn at the end of the story? (Even though they were different, they
were still friends.)
Would you like to have Pip, Flitter, and Flap as friends? Why or why not? (Answers will vary.)
Do you think this story could really happen? Why or why not? (Possible answer: Even though
the animals acted like real animals, they wouldn’t be able to talk to each other.)
