ERFÜLLUNG!
Wo,gibt es das schon? Erfülltes Leben?
Leben in dem man wohnen könnte, wie in einem Haus?
Gibt es das — ein Haus des Lebens?
Ein Haus der erfüllten Sehnsüchte?
Auf dem Wege begegenten sie vielen Menschen und Begebenheiten
– manches prägt sich in die Erinnerung ein,
Vieles rauscht einfach an ihnen vorbei.
Und sie kommen nach Bethlehem!
Dort fällt ihnen ein Kind in den Schoß!
Ein Wunderleben!
Wo kam das nur her? An diesem Ort?
In Bethlehem!
Wie hieß das? B e t h l e h e m! Haus des Lebens!
Ein besonderer Ort in der Geschichte! Gott hatte dort schon ganz
sonderbare Dinge getan. Einen jungen Menschen gerufen und ihn
zum König gemacht also das Beste im Leben geschenkt.
Mancheinem ist er so einfach und schlicht in den Weg getreten und
hat dem Leben eine neue Wendung gegeben.
Und da wurde es bei ihnen Weihnachten!

1. Hoe sal ek U na waarde ontvang en reg
ontmoet, en by u koms op aarde, my Koning,
U begroet? 0 Jesus, my verlange, verlig my
deur u Gees en help dat my gesange U kan
behaaglik wees.
2. U volk het eens met palme U tegemoet
gegaan. Hoor ook my jubelpsalme en my hosanna
aan. In feestelike klere, met blomme
fraai versier, wil ek ook self, o Here, U
Koningsintog vier.
3. U het met Heilands-oë my wanhoop aangesien
en vol van mede-doë gekom om my te
dien. Toe sonder troos en vrede ek sug op
sug moes slaak, het u barmhartighede my
hart weer bly gemaak.
4. Ek was bevlek met sonde, U kom en reinig
my, gevange en gebon-de, U kom en maak
my vry; my nederig geringe bring U die hoogste
eer en ryke seëninge wat mot nog roes
verteer.
5. U liefde was die rede dat U die hemeltroon
verlaat, om hier benede as mens by ons te
woon. Al ons verdriet en plae, die sondediens
se vrug, die neem U sonder klae vrywillig
op u rug.
6. Ja skryf dit in jul harte, bedroefdes, bly vol
moed. Al sou ook nood en smarte styg soos
‘n watervloed; al word die las nog swaarder,
die hulp is reeds naby, die Redder en Bewaarder
kom om ons te bevry.

And I will give you music, some joyful songs and psalms.
My heart will praise forever, with blessings overflow;

I faced much scorn and mocking, you came to honour me.

Der Kirchenvorstand blickt dankbar zurück auf ein ruhiges und erfolgreiches
Jahr.
Am 18. November fand unsere außerordentliche Gemeindeversammlung
(Haushaltsplanbesprechung) statt. Wir sind zuversichtlich
in Bezug auf unsere jetzige finanzielle Lage. Sie ist wesentlich besser
als im vergangenen Jahr und stimmt uns positiv für 2008. Der
Septemberbasar hat auch eine schöne Summe eingebracht und
unsere Fundraising-Aktionen, wie der Osterverkauf, Klub 50 und die
Aktion Wucherpfennig sind gut angekommen. Es sind auch einige
weitere großzügige Spenden eingegangen, für die wir sehr dankbar
sind. Alles Zeichen, die uns viel Mut machen!
Was die Instandhaltung unseres Gemeindezentrums angeht, ist
Folgendes zu berichten:
Die Dachreparaturen sind praktisch abgeschlossen, das Dach bedarf
aber der ständigen Wartung und Überwachung. Weiterhin ist unser
Glockenturm repariert und von außen angestrichen worden. Als
nächstes Projekt sollen die reparaturbedürftigen Schiebetüren in Angriff
genommen werden. Hierfür steht auch schon ein Plan bereit.
Weiterhin ist auch ein neues Bohrloch, welches wasserergiebig ist,
angelegt worden. Eine Pumpe wurde installiert und wir hoffen, über
die Sommermonate unseren Rasen mit Bohrlochwasser berieseln zu
können.
Nach längerem Anlauf hat es nun endlich geklappt, dass unsere Gemeinde
beim Finanzamt als „Public Benefit Organisation“ registriert
worden ist. Die entsprechende Registrationsnummer entnehmen Sie
bitte dem Deckelblatt des Gemeindebriefes.

Zum Schluss ein Wort des Dankes an alle die das Wohl der Gemeinde
auf dem Herzen tragen: Durch Ihre Fürbitte, durch tätige und praktische

Voorkatkisasieonderrig
Jeugdiges wat in die jare 1994—1995/96 gebore is (of selfs
vroeêr as hulle nog nie gekatkiseer het nie)word hartlik uitgenooi
om aan te meld. Die Aanmelding word gehou op Sondag
20 Januarie 2008 na afloop van die diens.Die reëlings vir
die klasse word daar getref.
Vorkonfirmandenunterricht
Jugendliche der Geburtsjahre 1994—1995/96 werden herzlich
eingeladen zum Vorkonfirmandenunterricht. Anmeldungen werden
Sonntag, den 20. Januar 2008 nach dem Gottesdienst bei dem
Gemeindezentrum entgegengenommen werden. Weitere Regelungen
betreffs des Unterrichts werden dort besprochen werden.
Were you born in the years 1994—1995/96 this
might be of interest to you. In confirmation classes we want
to explore what it means for us that we have a loving God.
We will want to understand why some people must suffer and
why others not. We will want to know why we cannot stop
wars etc. etc.
On Sunday 20 January after the service we will tell you
about all the arrangements that are necessary sothat this
course for you can work you and the othert participants.

Der Glockenturm
(Klub 50)
Vielen Dank für alle Spenden zur
Reparatur des Glockenturmes!
Mehrere Gemeindeglieder haben sich zu-
sammen getan und werden die Summe
für die Turmreparatur tragen. Die Ein-
nahmen des Klub50 sollen für das
Drehen der Glocken verwendet werden.
Sollte dann von dem Geld noch etwas
übrigbleiben, so soll es für die nächste große Reparatur am Gemeinde-
zentrum verwendet werden. Die großen Schiebetüren und Fenster im
Innenhof müssen ersetzt bzw repariert werden.
Die Klub50-Aktion soll mit einem grossen Advents– und Weihnachts-
liedersingen am 8, Dezember beendet werden.
Eine gesegnete Advents– und Weihnachtszeit

Baie dankie aan almal wat so ruim bygedra het
tot ons Toringfonds. Die herstelwerk aan die tor-
ing is nou afgesluit. Die oorblywende fondse word vir die draai van die
kerkklokke aangewend. Die res van die gelde in die fonds sal dan vir
die volgende groot taak gebruik word. Die groot skuifdeure en vensters
in die binnehof van die gemeentesentrum moet vervang of herstel word
sodat hulle weer goed kan funksioneer.

Hark the herald angels sing
Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
On 18 December it will be 300 years since the birth of
Charles Wesley, the most prolific and best-loved
hymnwriter in the English language. He wrote about 6500 hymns
most of which are very dense in their scriptural allusions. They sing
about conversion, about the joy of knowing Christ, the reality of sin
and the power and glory of God.
These rousing and often deeply moving songs were a driving force of
the revival in England giving rise to the saying “Methodism was born
in song.”
Charles was an indispensable partner to his older brother John, the
founder of the Methodist movement. The brothers were converted after
an encounter with the Moravian Brethren and the pietist movement
in Germany. After religious wars and dogmatic controversies
there was a new hunger for authentic spiritual experience. On the
Day of Pentecost 1738 Charles experienced conversion and a new
peace and joy in faith. He composed his first hymn two days later
and never stopped writing hymns. In the words of hymnologist Manning:
“We may not see God, but we cannot fail to see that Charles
Wesley saw him”.
Nowhere is Wesley’s poetic and theological ability more powerfully
demonstrated than in his well-loved Christmas hymn: Hark the herald
angels sing. Unlike many other Christmas hymns which simply retell
the Christmas story, this hymn is explores the theological significance
of the incarnation in a tightly knit web of scriptural references. However
the hymn did go through some changes before its rise in popularity.
Wesley himself wrote: "Hark how all the welkin rings / Glory to
the King of Kings." "Welkin" is an old English word meaning heaven.
A colleague, the Calvinist Whitefield, substituted the familiar opening
line in spite of the protests of the author. According to old English
tradition, the hymns were printed without tunes, and those leading
the singing were free to choose a tune depending on the metre of

it clear that he considered this
music as not for sacred use.
However the “trumpet
fanfare” tune fits the words so
well that today no hymn commission
would ever consider
printing an alternative tune.
And also for the Lutherans, the
lovers of brass bands, this hymn
has become a fixture for Christmas
Day:
fixed tunes. Love Divine and O for a
thousand tongues have at least 6 different
tunes assigned to each.
However since 1855 the text of Hark
the herald angels sing has been
firmly “married” to a tune by Felix
Mendelssohn. Dr. William Cummings
put the words and music together in
spite of evidence that neither author
nor composer would have approved.
Wesley had specifically requested
slow solemn music for his words.
Mendelssohn had written the tune for
a cantata which commemorated the
invention of the printing press by Jo-
Joyful all ye nations, rise / join
the triumph of the skies:
with the angelic host proclaim: / Christ is born in Bethlehem.
“Hark the herald angel sing, / Glory to the new-born King”.

Prayer: does it make any difference ?
London, Hodder, 2006.
Most of us will have had some experience with prayer, be
it the 'panic button' call "Help me, Lord - NOW!", or the
urge to say 'Thank you' for protection or a special gift like
a new-born baby. In this book we are given a wide and
deep look at prayer, this wonderful way of communication
between us tiny human beings and the almighty God. In
chapters like 'Why pray?', 'Does prayer change God ?',
'Unanswered prayer: whose fault ?', 'Prayer and physical
healing' and others the author takes a honest and practical
look at prayer. He gives no readymade answers or
quick explanations, but encourages us to keep on talking
and listening to God.
When writing this book, the author asked many other
people about prayer - their thoughts and experiences are
included throughout the book, 'as examples of actual
down-to-earth encounters with prayer'. 'When it comes to
prayer, we are all beginners', so he writes as a pilgrim, not
as an expert.
In one of the chapters prayer is described as 'the act of
seeing reality from God's point of view.' To me, that is a
very helpful perspective - God always sees the broader
picture and knows much better what to give me when. In
prayer I can learn to share His view !
