Capta<strong>in</strong>: First Mate! What’s <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> that k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> talk? Don’t you know you’re address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

capta<strong>in</strong>?<br />

First Mate: That’s not what I mean now. I’m go<strong>in</strong>g to strike, and so’s <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crew. That<br />

twenty-five-cent raise you <strong>of</strong>fered isn’t enough.<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: Come now, boys. Let’s not have any trouble. Let’s talk it over.<br />

First Mate: That’s all we’ve been do<strong>in</strong>’. There’s no use. Come on, boys, are you with me? Let’s<br />

strike!<br />

Crew: [voices]<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: Well, that sure is a tough break, all right. Everybody’s deserted me. Here I am all alone on<br />

<strong>the</strong> old <strong>Showboat</strong>, all by myself. [voices] But look, here come <strong>the</strong> boys back aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

First Mate: Say, Capta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: What is it, First Mate?<br />

First Mate: The boys and me have decided that we’ll come back without a raise. We hate to leave you<br />

all alone. So if you’ll <strong>in</strong>crease our grub to four pancakes <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> three for breakfast and<br />

give us an extry str<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> sausages, we’ll stick!<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: That’s mighty nice <strong>of</strong> you, boys. You shall have your pancakes and your sausages.<br />

[bark<strong>in</strong>g, voices]<br />

First Mate: We’ll stay <strong>the</strong>n, Capta<strong>in</strong>. Won’t we, boys?<br />

Crew: Aye, aye, Sir!<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: All right, First Mate. Head right up Lake Huron and br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Showboat</strong> down to<br />

Mack<strong>in</strong>ac straight <strong>in</strong>to Lake Michigan and we’ll soon be home. Turn right <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> old<br />

Chicago River, First Mate, that’s <strong>the</strong> way.<br />

First Mate: Here we are, back home, Capta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: Sure enough. I ride up <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> old home docks and put up at Clark Street. It’s just a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ute before we go ashore. We have no troubles, have we, First Mate?<br />

First Mate: Not us, trouble, Capta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: All right, boys. Let’s pack up our troubles and smile. That’s <strong>the</strong> best way—just smile.<br />

Maple City Four: Pack up your troubles <strong>in</strong> your old kit-bag<br />

And smile, smile, smile.<br />

While you’ve Lucifer to light your fag [cigarette],<br />

Smile, boys, that’s <strong>the</strong> style.<br />

What’s <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> worry<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

It never was worthwhile—so! —<br />

Pack up your troubles <strong>in</strong> your old kit-bag<br />

And smile, smile, smile. [foghorn, calliope]<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong>: The <strong>WLS</strong> <strong>Showboat</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Float<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Palace</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wonder</strong>, back from ano<strong>the</strong>r merry trip. Back<br />

at <strong>the</strong> old home port, <strong>WLS</strong> Chicago, <strong>the</strong> Sears Roebuck station.<br />
