1958-2003
We are excited to announce that this year’s fundraising efforts were a huge success! We have donated,
and will continue to donate all of the proceeds from Petunia integrifolia ‘TNT’ to the Kathy Pufahl
Pediatric IBD Research Fund. Thank you to all of those purchased this petunia last season, the total
funds raised were $1,100.
We appreciate all of those who have supported this cause throughout the years, the garden community,
friends, family and individuals who have donated in Kathy’s name. A big thank you to Cornell who hosts
the annual container contest at the field day, and to New York State Flower Industries for coordinating
this annual event.
The approximate giving total since 2004 in Kathy’s name exceeds $43,000. Your donations and
Like a miniature Helichrysum (Licorice Plant), cascading
branches to 24" are covered with delicate tiny grey leaves.
Is a lovely accent to a planter or used in well-drained soils.
Must not be over watered and clip the ends of the branches
occasionally to force fuller growth. Likes to be fed. Does
not dominate as Helichrysum p., preferred choice for
a smaller container.
Plectranthus (1 qt)
A hot little genus of foliage plants. Allied to coleus
with flowers as insignificant, these plants feature foliage
valuable for sun or shade, bedding or pots. Leaves rarely
shed, are strong and firm in substance, never bothered by
strong winds or even salt spray. Highly drought tolerant.
Most tolerant of abuse of any foliage addition.
P. amboinicus ‘Green Heart’
Fleshy, aromatic leaves characterize this species.
Stems are trailing and quite textural. Drought tolerant.
Dark green, glossy leaves with intensely purple undersides
and sprays of lavender flowers. 12-24"
maroon red with a dark center. Flowers are 3-4" across
and blooms all summer, self-sows. 16-20"
Rudbeckia hybrids (1 qt)
beginning in July. Long season performer grows 15-18"
with golden yellow flowers.
it has a green center but is a much stronger performer.
R. x ‘Indian Summer’
Long season performer with golden yellow flowers. 15-18"
R. x ‘Maya’
Long season performer with double yellow flowers. 15-18"
Ruellia brittoniana (1 qt)
Rudbeckia x ‘Prairie Sun’
Plant of tall, erect stature with particularly large blue
blooms. Flowers appear at 4' on axillary peduncles. Flowers
appear continually all summer and into fall although the
plant is never amassed with large numbers at any one
point. Twelve inch leaves are linear and deep, deep green.
S
Salvia (1 qt)
Here lies a vast selection of primarily tender perennials in
Zone 7 that behave like annuals. They grow quickly, bloom
for a considerable length of the season lasting until hard
frost. The characteristic structure of the flower consists of
the corolla or tubular part of the flower consisting of two
lips of unequal length, lower one usually spreading. The
calyx or covering is often quite distinctive, having two-lips.
Salvias are an important source of nectar for hummingbirds
and butterflies. They are a decorative necessity for a border
in need of color in August through early November. Quite
simply, they are essential.
Salvia argentea (Silver Salvia)
Biennial form with exceptionally grey, toothed and fuzzy
basal rosette of foliage 8" tall. 2 to 4' white flower stalks
usually appear the following year. Technically a biennial,
meaning it should die the second season of flowering. It
occasionally acts like a perennial.
Salvia argentea
Salvia Salvia c. ‘Lady in Red’
Salvia chamaedryoides
Very small grey leaves packed densely on spreading
stems. Bright, clear blue blooms are always present
well until the hardest frost. Spills over the edge of a
pot beautifully. Foliage always looks clean and sturdy.
Salvia chiapensis
Throughout the summer and into October bright fuchsia,
fuzzy blooms contrast solidly with its deep green, glossy
leaves. Stems sprawl allowing the plant to achieve a nice
18" spread with flower spikes reaching 2'.
Salvia coccinea
Salvia chiapensis
Salvia c. ‘Snow White’
Characteristic of the coccinea species of salvia, the
next three varieties produce distinctly graceful blooms,
in whorls, along the raceme. Like re-blooming perennials,
removal of spent flowers or frequent use as a cut flower will
prolong bloom time. Foliage is triangular and mint-like.
S. c. ‘Cherry Blossom’ (syn. S.c. ‘Coral Nymph’)
Corolla comprised of a white upper lip and a salmon-pink
lower lip. The overall effect is exquisitely pink. 18-24"
S. c. ‘Lady in Red’
This variety has deep scarlet blooms reaching 15-18"
and is well branched. Great alternative to the common
red S. splendens.
S. c. ‘Snow White’
Bright white form. 18"
Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria Blue’ Salvia g. ‘Argentine Skies’ Salvia interrupta Salvia i. ‘Bethelli’
‘Waverly’
Salvia g. ‘Big Pink’ Salvia g. ‘San Antonio’ Salvia g. ‘Black & Blue’ Salvia x ‘Indigo Spires’ Salvia leucantha
Salvia discolor
Noteworthy grey foliage is angular, lower surface and stems
are tomentose and white. Long arching stems and generous
spacing of the leaf pairs give the plant a wiry appearance.
Functionally, it is marvelous when the long stems extend
through full foliage. It can look sparse otherwise. Nearly black
corolla with grey calyx in late spring and August-October.
Salvia farinacea
Common blue bedding form of Salvia, with uncommon
qualities. Pencil thin flower spikes. Tough performer!
S. f. ‘Blue Bedder’
Tall form of Victoria Blue. 36"
S. f. ‘Victoria Blue’
Deep-violet blue flowers. 18"
Salvia greggi
S. greggi are many but few bloom like these.
Tough performer through heat and cold.
S. g. ‘Big Pink’
Large, violet-pink flowers highlighted by dark maroon
calyces. 18-24"
S. g. ‘Cherry Queen’
Cherry red color adds some spunk to any planting. 18"
S. g. ‘San Antonio’
A charming soft orange and yellowish bi-colored
flowering greggi variety. 18-24"
Salvia guaranitica
Tall, July blooming species that reaches 5' in a season. Broad,
ovate, mint-green leaves draw out both yellow and blue tones.
Particularly useful in the border in August and September
for tall color. Plant several together to make a statement.
Can handle part day shade.
S. guaranitica
Species of brilliant blue.
S. g. ‘Argentine Skies’
Pale blue form.
S. g. ‘Black & Blue’
Black calyx with a brilliant blue blossom.
Salvia x ‘Indigo Spires’
Dramatic salvia with densely packed, deep violet-blue spikes
appearing throughout the summer peaking right on through
until frost. The color intensifies as the nights get cooler.
In August expect the flower spikes to reach 2' atop 4-6'
plants. A hybrid product of S. farinacea and S. longispicata,
the bloom resembles that of Victoria Blue only larger in
every way. Consistently a top seller for good reason. At the
back of the border the woody base is hidden and the effect
spectacular. Beautiful company for Rudbeckia, Helianthus,
Echinacea, Nicotiana sylvestris, Lilies, Gaura, or Cosmos.
Salvia x ‘Mystic Spires’
Deep-violet blue flowers. 24-36"
Salvia interrupta ‘Waverly’
Light lavender blooms, as fuzzy as Salvia leucantha,
begin appearing in June and continue throughout the
season. The flower spikes elegantly rise to 4' with
crinkled sage green leaves.
Salvia involucrata (Rosebud Salvia)
S. i. ‘Bethelli’
Good for shady spots or full sun. Leaves are large and
fuzzy, light grey with pinkish veins. Deep rose-pink corolla
and bracts on a 6' plant in August last until the hard frost.
S. i. ‘Mulberry Jam’
Unlike the Rosebud Salvia, this involucrata selection has
a graceful flower spike without a clunky knob at the end.
Color is a deep fuchsia pink in both bracts and blossoms
and reaches 4-5' in sun or part shade.
Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage)
This is a well branched 3' sub-shrub by fall when it
flowers. Lacinate, tomentose, grey-green leaves are
attractive all season. In September, flowers appear.
The show peaks for the fall garden when all else is
in decline. It is an exceptional cut flower, fresh or dried.
One plant has over 100 flower stalks on it. Lasts till
the killing frost. Tomentose violet-purple calyx with
either a white or purple corolla.
a contrast beyond all dreams. Blooms in September
until the hard frost.
Salvia splendens ‘Van Houttei’
This is a premium 4' salvia. Grows in any reasonably
houttei variety, it is the loudest salvia we offer.
S. s. ‘Van Houttei Paul’
Plump purple blossoms and bracts cover this
floriferous and attractive form.
Salvia uliginosa
Clear sky blue flowers appear over willowy thin stems
in the latter part of summer. This is an improved, large
flower form reaching 5' in height. Looks especially striking
planted in mass with V. bonariensis. Can handle wet
feet and generally not particular to any soil type. It is
an effective choice for a meadow or informal garden
setting as well as the border.
Salvia ‘Wendy’s Wish’
Large hot pink tubular blooms, complimented by dark
green leaves with maroon stems. Compact growth, this
Tight growing, prehistoric relative of the fern.
Numerous yellow lacey fronds skim the ground at
topiary. Hardy to zone 7 as a woodland plant.
Senecio (1 qt)
Selaginella kraussiana
aureum
Broad array of species exists in this genus. These two
selections are gifts from Longwood Gardens, which
are used beautifully there.
S. ‘Vira-Vira’
This fuzzy, grey leafed Senecio is closely related to
Centaurea. As a matter of fact, our first plant was originally
identified as Centaurea pulchellum. It makes sense then
that this silver beauty is very similar to Centaurea
gymnocarpa and can also be used as an upright grey
foliage addition to the garden or pot. Its leaves are wider
in habit and quite finely divided. The plant reaches 2'.
Container Collection pre-packaged design Argentea
Beds & Borders Container Collection is a unique program designed to effectively merchandise and market professionally
designed container plantings in one simple unit. It is difficult, even for an accomplished gardener, to construct an artful container planting
when faced with many individual plants on the garden center bench. It is perhaps just as difficult for the garden center to devote trained
personnel to assist each customer. Beds & Borders has developed a simple pre-packaged design. Available as a finished 16" pre-planted container or
an exclusive custom designed, recyclable, cardboard basket holding 9 assorted plants. Also included is a double sided Point-of-Purchase posters which
stands within each collection. Informational placards are also included with planting and care instructions for all thirteen container designs. Corresponding
garden press and wire locking components will be available upon request. Each pre-assembled basket arrives ready to place on the retail sales table,
forming a container gardening display linking cross-merchandised products.
To our valued customers,
As we approach the upcoming season, I would like to share with you all that Beds & Borders has accomplished over the past year. By every measure, 2011 was a strong year.
After a season of careful analysis, we have come up with new ways to improve upon existing offerings while continuing to develop new products and programs that will accelerate
the growth of the brand and deliver the best possible solutions to our customers.
As a part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and efficiency, we are putting an increased emphasis on our many digital initiatives. We encourage you to access Beds & Borders
information electronically, using our online ordering process, a writable PDF order form that is downloadable for all of our customers on our website; bedsandborders.com.
If you share your email address with us, we can send you paperless correspondence, including statements, acknowledgements, invoices and availability. Our weekly availability
update is sent out every Friday via an electronic email program. This update provides a weekly detailed crop status list, our shipping schedule and weekly plant highlights.
Participating in social media and mobile technology is a great way to enhance your shopping experience. You can find us on Facebook. We post to Facebook daily during the spring months.
You can check out new plants, view sales, participate in plant conversations, see availability and be automatically eligible for giveaways. Additionally, we have introduced QR codes (Quick
Response barcode) for all of our STD1Q potted plants, linking you to cultural information at your fingertips. Our goal is to continue to build on our most significant asset – real-time
connections with our customers.
In an effort to make sure our products are priced to accurately reflect what it costs us to produce them, we performed an extensive cost analysis of all product lines. We found that some
product line pricing can be lowered. However, due to ever-increasing business expense, you will see a 2% increase in our base annual price. To offset any pricing increase, we are pleased
to offer an early order discount on orders received prior to February 3, 2012. The discount offers a potential savings of 5%. There will be a 3% discount for all early orders over $1,500
It is with the support of you, our business partners, that we are able to continue to reach great heights. As always, I appreciate your feedback and look forward to another wonderful year.
