Every morning, Julie Ogilvie heads to The Village 

Pantry at 5:30 a.m. to prepare her restaurant’s famous 

hash browns and home fries from scratch. 

Ogilvie makes the hash browns by hand, shearing the potatoes 

without any machine assistance. 

If you prefer someone else do the cooking, it’s a great 

place to head on a lazy weekend morning. 

Located at 184 Second St. in downtown Los Altos, 

The Village Pantry features an assortment of items on its 

weekend brunch menu, including blueberry and cranberry 

French toast, numerous omelets and other special items. 

“Everything is homemade – the pancakes, crepes,” 

Ogilvie said. 

As spring approaches, many customers choose to sit 

outside and enjoy the homemade eggs Benedict and eggs 

Florentine. 

“I love sitting in the patio area. It is so cozy and relaxing,” 

said Shahed Sajadieh, who recently discovered the 

little restaurant nestled between Main and State streets.

“It’s the best way to unwind before Monday – good food 

and everyone is so nice.” 

Sajadieh said her favorite menu items are the omelets 

because of the variety available. Ogilvie features crab, 

ham and bacon and vegetarian omelets – and offers an 

assortment of others. All omelets are served with a side of 

hash browns or home fries.

The Village Pantry serves breakfast and lunch daily 

from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the week, customers rarely 

look at the menu, Ogilvie said. 

“we have 85 percent local, regular customers,” she 

said. “we know their names, and we know what they 

want.” 

Because of the familiarity, Ogilvie said, she tries to 

add new items for weekends. The Pantry recently added 

quesadillas and huevos rancheros to the menu. 

“I make the tomato sauce and salsa myself,” she said. “I 

also cook my own black beans for the huevos rancheros.” 

All foods and vegetables are organic and locally purchased. 

Ogilvie visits local farms and farmers’ markets 

weekly for produce. 

In addition, Ogilvie ensures that her food is healthful 

and not greasy. For example, rather than making coleslaw 

with mayonnaise, she uses low-fat yogurt. For her hollandaise 

sauce, she substitutes Egg Beaters for egg yolks. 

Judy and Don Vandenberg have patronized The Village 

Pantry every Sunday after church for the past three 

years. They said they like the restaurant because of its 

unique layout and the quality of the food. 

“The home fries are the greatest in the world,” Don 

said.

Both agreed their favorite menu item is the Joe Scramble, 

a three-egg omelet with corned beef and vegetables, 

including organic spinach and mushrooms. 

“The owners are so nice here. They learn your names 

and know about your life,” Judy said. “It’s very hard to 

find that in today’s world.” 

Ogilvie said her customers are like her family. She has 

designated coffee cups for several of them. Because one of 

her customers served in the u.S. Marine corps, she keeps 

a coffee mug with the Marines’ logo reserved for that particular 

customer, Ogilvie added. The giving is reciprocal. 

Many of Ogilvie’s customers have given her handmade 

gifts, which are displayed in the restaurant. Photos of her 

regular customers and cards from her husband, David, 

hang around the restaurant. 

The Village Pantry opened in 1947. without any experience 

in the restaurant industry, the Ogilvies bought it 12 

years ago. Julie always wanted her own restaurant, David 

said. But it needed some renovation – actually, a great deal 

of renovation. Once the always family-owned restaurant 

was up and running again again, the Ogilvies made sure 

they were consistent and opened punctually every day. 

“Julie always greets the customers with a smile,” David 

said. 

If a regular customer does not come in when expected, 

Julie will call to make sure everything is OK.

If you’ve lived long enough in Los Altos, you may remember 

the days when animals ran amok downtown. 

Buffy the cow, Buttercup the Lamb and a bear balancing 

precariously on a vine hung out on Main Street. 

An eccentric woman took her monkey for a bicycle ride – 

who was she, anyway? Then, there was the other woman, 

constantly feeding the birds. 

wallflowers, basically. 

They’re long gone, gentle reminders of the quaint village 

atmosphere this town enjoyed during its heyday of 

farm – and other – animals. Of course, true to its nine 

lives, the alley cat is still around, scaring the bird poop out 

of a little yellow canary. But you really need a good eye to 

see them. 

The French titled it trompe l’oeil – a trick of the eye – a 

style of painting that gives the appearance of three-dimensional 

or photographic realism. If you’ve ever done a double 

take at the outside wall of Tom’s Depot at Loyola corners 

or recognized Dennis and Linda ronberg sitting outdoors 

along the side of Linden Tree children’s recordings and

Books, then you know how tricky trompe can be. 

They’re the pretty painted scenes that dot Los Altos, 

from outside walls downtown to Loyola corners and the 

benches on Main Street, even murals hidden inside several 

businesses. 

Meet Los Altos resident Jan Meyer, whose love 

for painting pulled her from canvas to concrete in the 

1970s. At that time, Meyer spent her days painting and 

exhibiting her artwork at gallery 9 on State Street. But 

the work was isolating. 

“I was feeling the need to work somewhere,” she 

said. 

Then came an offer to start painting the town. 

Along with friend and artist carolyn Peterson, Meyer 

began painting murals on walls outside downtown 

buildings. what makes the murals special is that most 

of the scenes depict the merchants associated with the 

business and everyday life. 

“There were 18 of them at one point,” Meyer said 

of the outdoor murals. “They’re real Los Altos stuff – 

these are all real people.” 

Meyer studied decorative painting at Parsons School 

of Design in new york city and earned a bachelor’s 

degree in art from San Jose State university, but the 

trompe l’oeil style – that she taught herself on the job.

“I painted wonderful, fun things – windows where 

there were no windows,” she said. “It was wonderful 

because I was out and I got to know people.” 

After four years in partnership with Peterson, Meyer 

began painting the murals by herself and then started 

dabbling indoors, creating illusions for interiors. Tropical 

scenes outside windows, three-dimensional effects 

on floors – anything was a canvas for Meyer. 

There was a mailman pushing his mail cart on the 

wall of the consignment store at First and Main streets 

past a realistic colonel Sanders, painted because the 

building was once home to Kentucky Fried chicken; 

an English country garden at 284 Main St., once rick’s 

Optical; a young girl looking in the window at 195 State 

St., home to cranberry Scoop; a truck facing Lucky’s 

parking lot at Los Altos Auto. 

Through the years, the city of Los Altos commissioned 

Meyer to touch up the murals when they began 

fading from the elements. Sadly, many murals fell victim 

to modernization or were covered by another coat of 

paint.

last fall; the lady in a polka-dot dress at cooks 

Junction disappeared under a new coat of paint; the 

day-at-the-beach scene outside Ingrid’s Suntanning – 

gone.

For those who remain in Los Altos long after Buffy, Buttercup 

and bear – the man who is forever contemplating a 

Picasso, the little girl looking in a window or the young man 

proposing to his bride-to-be – life is as predictable as knowing 

someone will turn and do a double take on encoutering 

one of them for the first time on walls throughout town. 

For Meyer, each mural, each little painting left behind 

holds a special message, though many are inside her 

heart – like the young man proffering a diamond ring to a 

young woman in a window – painted on the wall of what 

was once the Diamond Brokers. 

“That’s my son craig,” Meyer said. “Elise is up in the 

window saying, ‘I do.’” 

That was real, too – the two have been married 16 years. 

Today, Meyer has switched from concrete to canvas, 

moved indoors from out, and paints the homey scenes she 

did in the 1970s – depictions of rooms and furnishings in 

bold and blending patterns, canvases that exude warmth, 

quaintness and a “fresh, modern feeling” – without the 

trick-of-the-eye affect. 

And she still gets calls to paint the occasional trompe 

l’oeils. 

“I’ve been sort of around,” she said. “My name is 

somewhat known.”

She slides, she swings and she promenades easily 

across Loyola School’s Multipurpose room, where 

the Bows & Beaus Square Dance club meets every 

other wednesday night. Short but agile, June cademartori 

wears a “boy” apron and listens attentively for the calls. 

It’s hard to tell by watching her that she recently celebrated 

her 86th birthday. 

The Swiss native has indulged in this great American 

pastime since 1988, when she was still married to her first 

husband. After he passed away, she met her second husband, 

who attended square dances with her. now she’s 

single again and living at The Terraces at Los Altos retirement 

community. cademartori still square-dances. 

Some 70 Los Altos and Mountain View residents, singles 

and couples, pay $12 monthly to be members of Bows 

& Beaus. 

Meet and marry 

“It’s a great way to meet a husband,” joked one woman 

wearing a purple western skirt over a flouncy petticoat. 

There is no dress code at the regular dance meetings, 

so members wear prairie skirts or street clothes, but most 

pull out all sartorial stops for the hoedowns. Bolo ties, 

colorful skirts and western shirts materialize for special 

occasions such as the county Fair or Jubilee. 

Different clubs dance at different levels, according to 

Dinesh Desai, another longtime member. Bows & Beaus 

dances at the Plus level – beginners attend Monday-night 

classes for nine months to learn the 52 rudimentary calls 

and the 17 mainstream calls. There are an additional 31 

calls in the Plus level that dancers must learn to participate 

in club dances. 

Desai, 71, retired in 1994 from money management 

and took up square dancing. Most people who attend 

want to learn the calls “so they can attend the Saturday 

night hoedowns and other events,” Desai said. A Stanford

thought folk dancing “was a good 

way to meet the ladies,” especially 

because he was a native of India and 

knew more men than women. 

Although he met Joy at a dance and 

later married her, she “doesn’t quite 

have the aptitude for it,” he said, so 

he comes alone. Desai said he likes to 

square-dance because “we really have 

to listen, there are a lot of variations in 

the calls, unlike in ballroom dancing.” 

Square dancing helps him maintain 

his focus. 

“If you don’t do it for a year, you 

forget the calls,” he said. 

Los Altos hills resident Lee Ann 

Vojvoda square-danced with the Sues 

and cues club in the 1970s. when she 

met her future husband, John, she introduced 

him to square dancing. They took a break until 

their children were in college, and recently started again. 

She goes partly to socialize, because “a certain personality 

is attracted to this.” Members come from “all walks 

of life and they’re wonderful, nice people.” In addition to

the socializing, Vojvoda said the exercise and brainwork 

are positive factors that motivate her to continue. 

Pat wong, a Los Altos resident and registered nurse, 

comes for the exercise and the people. 

“They are very friendly,” she said. 

wong enjoys dancing, particularly the square-dancing

traditions, which allow her to come as she is. 

“Ballroom dancing is more sophisticated, and I don’t 

like to dress up,” wong said. 

Although her husband, an engineer, likes to dance, 

wong says he works too hard to attend. That’s OK with 

her, because she’s dancing for herself, she said. 

The lowdown on the Hoedown 

The square dance, also known as western square dancing, 

requires four couples and a caller who choreographs 

the dance with his calls. The caller tries to create a rhythmic 

flow among the dancers. From california to Finland, 

square-dancing steps remain the same. 

According to Keith Ferguson, Bows & Beaus’ caller 

for 23 years, square dancing originated with the Morris 

Dancers in England – the folk dance resembles the French 

quadrille, popular during the 17th century. 

Like many other members, Ferguson met his wife, 

Meg, through club activities. Ferguson commands the 

room with his rhythmic calls for wednesday’s Bows & 

Beaus, which has met at Loyola for more than 10 years. 

when the music begins, all eyes are on Ferguson, a 

big man with a booming voice who has the dancers “Allemanding” 

left and “Promenading” right just before they 

“Pass Thru.” A square-dance-caller extraordinaire, Ferguson 

knows more than 200 modern western calls, or 

short instructions, and calls them out in time to the music.

To Allemande is to turn in a certain direction, to 

Promenade is to walk. Most people are familiar with 

“Do-Sa-Do,” which instructs dancers to touch opposite 

shoulders and turn around. A lesser-known call, “Stack 

the wood,” results in couples hugging each other. 

“Singles need a lot of practice with this one, and 

sometimes I see them go out to the parking lot to practice

Several couples in the club started out as singles, said 

past President naomi Van horn. A Los Altos resident, Van 

horn met two future husbands square-dancing. when her 

first husband passed away, she started attending the club 

dances by herself and met richard Boucher, whom she 

married. 

while raising her two sons, Van horn said she didn’t 

participate in club dances. 

“It’s really hard when you have young kids in different 

activities,” she said. 

which explains why there aren’t many young parents 

who participate in square-dancing activities. 

Meanwhile, cademartori has the time of her life dancing. 

“I plan to stay single,” she said.

According to the u.S. census Bureau, the united 

States has the largest number of centenarians in 

the world – 70,490 – and 70 percent will spend 

the rest of their lives in the place where they celebrated 

their 65th birthday. 

while there are clusters of pre-world war II homes, 

old farmhouses and former summer homes, most of the 

houses in Los Altos and Los Altos hills were built postwar 

with young families in mind. 

Those once-young parents are now grandparents in 

their 70s or older. Postwar builders did not account for 

age-related conditions such as reduced mobility or limited 

range. Many dwellings do not support the physical and 

sensory changes people encounter as they age. 

As life expectancy has lengthened over the past 50 

years, so have our expectations for quality of life. Seniors 

hope to stay as active and involved as possible – traveling, 

learning new things or embarking on new careers. And 

they want to remain in their homes as long as they can. 

Aging in Place 

It’s a trend tagged with an official name: Aging in 

Place. The idea is gaining increased attention as 76 million 

u.S. baby boomers grow older. web sites are dedicated 

to the growing number of people who don’t want 

to be uprooted from the homes and neighborhoods where 

they have lived most of their lives. 

An AArP survey last year reported that 33 percent of 

adults 45 and older have modified their current homes to 

enable them to remain in them longer. 

That’s where I come in. As an interior designer, I recommend 

features people can add or change in their homes 

to make everyday living easier. 

One of my favorite design projects was a remodel for 

ron and nancy c. The cs purchased their home – a handsome, 

one-story ranch house – in Los Altos’ Montclaire 

Elementary School neighborhood in 1973. Their three 

children grew up in the home and have long since moved 

out and established families of their own.

Today, ron’s a retired entrepreneur 

and nancy’s a local watercolor 

artist. Their deepest desire: 

a remodel wish list that included 

changes necessary to make their 

home a safe place to age in comfortably. 

Lighting 

Although the kitchen had been 

remodeled 20 years earlier, there 

was not enough lighting throughout 

the house. considering that 

50-year-old eyes need twice as 

much light as 30-year-old eyes, 

there should be enough illumination 

in a room that one can easily 

find an earring dropped on the 

floor. 

general lighting should be on 

dimmers so that brightness can 

be adjusted. The living and dining 

rooms were one long space separated visually by a 

low ceiling in the dining area. The living room boasted 

a tall, sloped ceiling with a rafter beam. To increase the 

daylight, we replaced the low ceiling with two large windows 

that added height and light to the area, creating the

from a well-lit area to a dark one. Adding 

floor lamps with dimmers and sufficient 

wattage (75w-150w) is easy, enabling one 

to crank up the brightness when reading, 

knitting, painting or performing any detail 

work. 

we added recessed lighting everywhere 

and track lights in hallways and the master 

bedroom to illuminate nancy’s art. 

Other routine changes for seniors include 

a growing sensitivity to glare, so 

care should be taken to avoid direct views 

of light bulbs. Shiny surfaces reflect light 

into eyes. use shades and curtains to reduce 

glare from bright daylight or from 

windowpanes at night. 

Building the bathroom 

The guest and master bathrooms incorporate 

curbless showers level with the rest of the floor to 

create safe and easy entry. For a cool effect and fast drainage, 

the contractor installed long, slender, stainless-steel 

trough drains alongside one of the shower walls.

through a parallel dimension – a tunnel in time of sound, 

smell and sight. A glimpse into the everyday life of birds, 

boars, one bovine and a barnyard.” 

I’ve just hiked one mile into Deer hollow Farm, a trove 

of treasures nestled in the hills of rancho San Antonio 

Open Space Preserve that borders Los Altos and Los Altos 

hills. 

And I’m out to interview them all. I want to know what 

makes them tick. how can any living thing survive in this 

world with such a carefree life? no cars, no cable, no communications. 

Deer hollow might as well be the “Twilight Zone” for 

Los Altos suburbanites – the only residences that qualify 

as farms in this town have two dogs – maybe a turtle. As 

alien as farm stock might be to Los Altos residents, and 

as lazy as I think Deer hollow’s are, I’ve discovered that 

it’s my own definition of working that befuddles my mind 

into thinking farm animals live high on the hog. 

“work – effort exerted to do or make something; toil,” 

according to the new world Dictionary. 

clearly, my attempts to interview the animals about 

the lazy life were foiled by their busy schedules. 

If the hens weren’t busy clucking away and scratching 

holes in the ground, then the others were busy scratching 

the dirt behind them to fill the holes. This needs only a talent 

scout to discover the new “real housewives of Los Altos.”

Two males strutted through the yard ensuring the hens 

towed the line – much too busy to give me the time of day 

or a cock-a-doodle-doo – though they did pause to pose 

for the camera. 

I’d obviously arrived at the two pigs’ naptime. Though 

they wouldn’t waken for an interview, it was apparent to 

me which one was the male. no, it’s not what you’re thinking 

– he was snoring. 

The sheep and lambs might have talked if the hay 

trough were empty, but alas – it just wasn’t meant to be. 

The ducks were too busy trying to swim away. I didn’t 

have the heart to tell them they were in a circular wading 

pool. 

And the buxom bovine? not even a moo from the cow, 

who, on a beautiful, crisp, clear and sunny day, had better 

things to do in the green pasture under a tree – like contemplate 

life – than explain to me how important her job 

is. 

I wonder if she gets benefits. 

yes, the grass is always greener on the other side. Of 

course, the manure is much deeper, too. But don’t take it 

from me. Visit the historical farm, meet the farm animals 

– chat ’em up, so to speak – and learn about their care and 

what life was like on a homestead farm 150 years ago.
