In such thrilling and exciting times one is astonished by
the solidity of the art market and the successful art
auctions of the International Auctioneers.
Th is magazine refl ects on the successes of the
last season and off ers a small slice of the upcoming
season from all the IA partners worldwide. As auctioneers,
we excel at and love playing with numbers. Th ese, however,
the connoisseurship, the joy of the search and the
discovery is more important, and the more beautiful side.
Th e individual experts and auctioneers with their great
expertise make up the nimbus of an auction house. In our
often privately run auction houses one is qualifi ed through
connoisseurship.
INTERNATIONAL AUCTIONEERS
Alessandro Porro, our President, was one such outstanding
example. However, we sadly report that just three days
after our last meeting he passed away. He was third generation
at the Italian auction house Porro & C. an exceptionally gifted
expert, a gentleman and a man of letters, a distinguished art
historian: modest, but rich in knowledge and friendship.
Th is edition is dedicated to him. Nicholas D. Lowry of Swann
Gallaries has now taken over this position.
A pair of late 18 th century fi re-gilt bronze candelabra lights up the
international Christmas auction at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers
in Copenhagen.
When the doors open to the upcoming international
auction auction at the end of November, you’ll be greeted by
a pair of remarkable late 18 th century gilt bronze candelabra. Th e
man behind them is English manufacturer and purveyor
Matthew Boulton (1728–1809), who grew up in Birmingham
and came to be one of the city’s central fi gures.
AN ENTERPRISING ENGLISHMAN
Boulton’s father ran a company that manufactured metal products,
such as fi ne quality buttons and buckles for military uniforms.
After the death of his father, Boulton took over the company,
which was under rapid expansion as a result of the
introduction of steam engines. He entered into a partnership
with Scottish engineer James Watt, and together they
mechanised and streamlined production. Th e modern technology
also opened new doors, and the company began to mint coins
for the UK and other countries.
ONE OF BIRMINGHAM’S BIGWIGS
Boulton was a powerful man in his day, not least because of his
high-ranking position in the “Lunar Society”, a dinner club
and informal learned society of prominent fi gures which formed
the basis of the industrial revolution. Th e group was established
by prominent men from Birmingham with an interest in art, science
and theology, and included members such as James Watt,
Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgwood and Joseph Priestley.
CANDELABRA, VASES AND FIRE-GILT BRONZE
Th ings progressed well for Boulton’s company, which was now
able to open new factories in Soho. In the late 1760s and early
1770s, it became fashionable among the affl uent bourgeoisie to
adorn their homes with decorated vases and candelabra.
Boulton tried to meet this demand, entering into a partnership
with the physician John Fothergill. Based on the French
model, they embarked on the production of exquisite vases and
candelabra of fi re-gilt bronze. Th ey were inspired by classical
Greek works of art, which they borrowed from collectors and
sculptors among their circle of friends. Th e results were small
works of art, which remain famous and highly sought after
for their beauty and unique quality to this day. Th e candelabra
PURVEYOR TO THE BRITISH AND RUSSIAN COURTS
In 1770, Boulton visited the British royal family and sold several
vases to the wife of King George III, Queen Charlotte, a
number of which remain in the ownership of the monarchy. However,
during these years, the company failed to thrive, and the
two otherwise highly enterprising gentlemen were left with an
extensive stock of beautiful gilt vases and candelabra. As luck
would have it, their works were to the taste of Catherine the Great
of Russia, and many of the pieces were sold to the Russian
Imperial Court.
Bertel Th orvaldsen (1770– 1844) is one of Denmark,s best-known
artists. Over 40 years he lived and worked in Rome, where he
was one of the most important European representatives of neoclassical
sculpture.
Among his most famous works are the sculptures with
motifs from ancient mythology such as Jason with the Golden
Fleece, Venus, Mercury, Ganymede, Hebe, Cupid and Psyche. In
addition, a series of monumental sculptures of historical fi gures,
among others Pope Pius 7 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Th roughout his life Th orvaldsen made many portraits
both as medallions and portrait busts. Th e earliest busts from
Rome showed a strong inspiration from ancient portrait art. Some
of his early busts from 1803– 05 relate to the heroic classicism
in Th orvaldsen,s other works. From 1815 the portrait busts were
mainly executed in natural size and correspond to the tradition
of the ideal, but they also contained precise individual features.
MARCHESA FLORENZI
Th e marble bust of Marchesa Florenzi (1802– 1870) is a vivid
representation of the beautiful young lady, who entered social
life at a ball in Prince Torlonia's residence in 1821. At the same
party the Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria participated and
he right away fell for her beauty and charm. Th ey often went to
the same balls, among others in the house of the famous
Pauline Borghese. Over the years King Ludwig I of Bavaria
(reign 1825–48) visited Florenzi at her villa in Colombella
of Ascagnano near Perugia. King Ludwig was often accompanied
by artists, who were commissioned to make portraits of the
young beauty. It was the King, who introduced Th orvaldsen and
Florenzi to one another.
In the catalogue of the estate auction of the late Th orvaldsen
two busts of Marchesa Florenzi were mentioned.
Today one of them is owned by Th orvaldsen's Museum in Copenhagen,
the other one was bought by a private collector and is
the one to be auctioned this November at Bruun Rasmussen
Auctioneers in Copenhagen.
