When Sony Music Studios expanded into the adjacent<br />

former taxicab garage in Manhattan, it was the first new<br />

space converted to studio use at their Manhattan for many<br />

years.<br />

Because it occupies a separate structure from the adjacent<br />

main recording complex, Studio D benenefits from a<br />

degree of autonomy while the room layouts were somewhat<br />

constrained by the long and narrow original garage.<br />

Artist lounge and offices are placed on the upper level.

The gateway serves as a landmark at the southern<br />

boundary of the North Hollywood Arts District<br />

CRA project area. The project memoralizes the role<br />

of Noho as the backlot to many Hollywood<br />

television and film productions signified by the<br />

many angles busy erecting the sign.<br />

The gateway sign was realized in collaboration<br />

with the Community Redevelopment Agency of hte<br />

City of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> and artist Peter Shire.

Bailey Library as part of the district wide<br />

Bailey Library is situated at the heart of<br />

Exposition Park Regional Branch Library constructed as part of the City of<br />

<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Sustainable Design Implementation Program replaces a nearby<br />

outdated facility and features a building-integrated photovoltaic array<br />

generating more than 50% of the library’s annual energy needs.<br />

The library was awarded <strong>LEED</strong>-NC v2.1 Gold certification.

This three storey house was<br />

constructed on a previously undeveloped<br />

parcel overlooking the Echo Park<br />

neighborhood of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong>.<br />

The design incorporates a large two<br />

storey loft style dwelling atop separate<br />

guest quarters straddling and existing<br />

stone wall. Corrigated aluminum<br />

siding was used throughout.<br />

The house is placed at one corner of the<br />

hillside lot preserving three-quarters<br />

as openspace accessed from the living<br />

area by a circulat stair.<br />

Burnish Stone anticipated the<br />

revolution of digital recording<br />

technique and undertook a complete<br />

technology upgrade of their earliest<br />

and largest suite in 2001.<br />

While interior finishes were updated<br />

and coordinated with their later<br />

facilities, the original acoustics by<br />

Vincent A. van Haaff of Waterland<br />

Design were largely unchanged, again,<br />

for playback continuity of the recordings<br />

of artists many of whom return<br />

for the outstanding qualities the<br />

facility affords.<br />

Studio 1 is the second and larger of<br />

two control rooms realized in Tokyo by<br />

Waterland utilizing floated concrete<br />

frontwall monitoring environment.<br />
