1. Introduction 

This section covers all of the information you will need to initiate work with Data View. All features covered by this 

manual are applicable to both the Cobra and the Shark data logging systems, unless the section specifies 

otherwise. 

Each computer must be fitted with a USB protection device called DK-Lock before data view will operate. 

1.1 Overview 

The Data View software tool is a high level analysis tool, as well as acting as the hub for control of real time 

telemetry and data export.

1.2 PC requirements 

The system is able to function on any modern PC running either Windows2000 or Windows XP, our personal 

preference is for WindowsXP. To cover all eventualities your PC should have the following software/hardware 

systems installed: 

o 10/100BaseT Ethernet port with Microsoft protocol TCP/IP installed 

o RS232 – Serial port which can be used for certain programming operations 

o Type II PCMCIA card slot (Shark system only) 

o USB port 

o Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or later (ensure this is set to Work Online)

1.3 USB key installation. 

For your computer to recognise and function with the DK-Lock protection key it is first necessary to install the device 

USB drivers. 

From the Hardlock folder on your system CD, run the hldrv32.exe file, follow the installation in the normal way. 

Insert your DK-Lock key, Windows should find the new software without problem. 

To check the correct installation and recognition of your key, refer to Start / settings / control panel / system / 

hardware / device manager / Universal serial bus controllers. The key will be denoted by the name Alladin USB key 

There have been cases of incompatibility Windows XP ® Service Pack2 operating system. In this case, it is needed to 

manually install the custom drivers by the following steps: 

- run the installation file HASPUserSetup.exe 

- copy the file hlvdd.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32 

Note: These files are located on your system CD under the Hardlock menu 

Note: For this manual installation the DK-Lock key must be fitted to the PC.

1.4 Installation 

Insert the system CD and under the Data View folder Run the Setup.exe file to install the software. This will create 

both a desktop icon and a shortcut under Start / Programs / Digitek Corse / Data View 

If you have been given a set of pre-defined system files, they can be manually copied to the folder.c:\dataview\setup 

You will also receive a set of files marked as CLL, LPS and TPX which will be unique to your system, these should 

be copied manually into the folder c:\ TableManager ETH\tables. 

If you have not already done so, you will also need to install a program called DK-Link which is also located on your 

system CD in the Dklink folder, run the setup.exe. The DK-Link program should be running in minimised mode 

whenever you need to communicate with any logger. See section 1.6

1.5 Upgrades 

Due to ongoing development of this software you will periodically be sent an upgrade version. This can be installed 

over the top of an existing installation and will not overwrite any of your customised system files.

1.6 Communication – Ethernet 

To activate any communication session between a logger and your PC it is first necessary to have both the PC and 

the logger working within a similar IP network group. 

The default IP setting of your data logger will be written on the documentation, which is sent with it. To change your 

computer IP setting, select: Start/settings/network connections – select the Local Area Connection / Internet 

Protocol TCP/IP to display the IP properties as shown here. 

You only need to change the IP address and the Subnet mask, all other properties are unnecessary. Press Ok to 

accept the changes. The IP shown in this picture is only an example and should not be copied. 

For users who need to change the IP of the data logger to suit a fixed network IP, we have specific re-programming 

tools for this purpose, contact your dealer. 

Understanding IP addresses. 

There are 3 significant lines to the IP Address. 

• Top line is the IP Address which has 4 sets of 8bit values separated by a dot eg: 196.168.10.10 

• Middle line is the Subnet mask which is typically 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0 

• The default gateway is unimportant. 

The IP Address is split up into 2 sections known as the Network IP and the Host. To determine which part of the IP 

Address relates to which section (Network IP or Host) it is necessary to look at the subnet mask. 

Subnet mask Example 1 

A Subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 means that the first 2 parts of the IP address are Network IP and the second 2 

parts are Host 

Subnet mask Example 2 

A Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 means that the first 3 parts of the IP address are Network IP and only the last 

part is the Host 

For PC’s or loggers to communicate freely on the same local network the Network IP and the Subnet mask must 

be the same. Individual data loggers or PC identity is defined by the value of the Host. 

The Value of the Host is an 8 bit number which is 0-255. In reality you are only able to use numbers from 1 to 254. 

Examples. 

Address – 192.168.10.18 

Subnet – 255.255.0.0 

To add a logger to this Network group you can program the logger with the following: 

Address – 192.168.10.1 to 254 as long as it is not 18 or 

Address – 192.168.1 to 254 as long as it is not 10.18 

Basically you are using the same Network IP and only making a change to the Host to define individual identity. 

You will see that a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 gives a maximum possible number of hosts of only 255. A 

subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 gives a maximum number of hosts of 255 x 255 = 65,000.

The Network IP can be any number at all as long as it falls between 1 to 254 for each of it’s 3 possible parts.

1.7 Communication – Ping – DK-Link 

Once installed DK-Link may be started from Start/programs/digitek Corse/DK-Link. It can also be Run from Table 

Manager by selecting Network / Ping. IMPORTANT - Without this program running it will be impossible to 

communicate with any data logger. 

With a data logger is connected with power on, and both the logger and PC are operating in the same Network IP 

range, DK-Link should look like this. 

In this case there is a data logger of serial number Shark_003. The type of the logger is Shark, and the current Alias 

is not present and indicated by the /............... To learn more about Alias, refer to section 1.4c of the table manager 

manual. 

If for any reason the data logger is not seen by DK-Link the window will look like this. It will also appear to ‘blink’ 

every few seconds as the screen automatically refreshes itself by ‘Pinging’ the network. 

In this case of no communication check the following. 

o Power supply to the data logger 

o Code Load is not connected with ground 

o The Key input is switched to 12v (Shark system only) 

o The Ethernet connection wiring is correct 

o TCP/IP is installed on your computer 

o There are no conflicts or problems with your network card 

o The IP of data logger is known and the PC - IP address is set accordingly 

o Internet Explorer 4.0 or later must be installed 



2. Data View – Overview

The Data View analysis software is generic and is able to perform a wide range of functions, not all of which are 

required by the system you are using. For this reason there is a small amount of initial setup and configuration work 

required to tailor it to your needs. 



2.1 Initial setup / Lap definition

This function will search the incoming data for a specified channel to indicate the beginning or end of lap. This 

channel is typically Time or Space (lap distance). 

Without this setting the start/end of lap will be decided from the second where the lap beacon signal is seen. For 

comparison operations it is vital to align the compared data as accurately as possible. 

Both the Time and Space channels of your logger will return to zero when the lap beacon is seen. Either may be 

used to define the laps, but it is recommended that Time is used as it does not rely on any external measurement to 

generate its signal. The Time should be samples at least 100Hz

2.2 Initial setup / Miscellaneous / Distance

The miscellaneous configuration plays a vital role within Data View and must be configured correctly before many of 

the functions will operate correctly. Select Configure / Miscellaneous to open this window. 

Distance alignment. He fundamental problem when comparing any two data sets is to ensure that each piece of 

data is occurring at the same place on the track. The start of the lap is very accurately defined by the lap beacon, 

from this point forward the vehicle position is derived from the wheel speed inputs to give a distance (Space 

channel). The Space channel is automatically re-set to zero at the start of the lap and accumulates upwards to 

reach a maximum as the vehicle passes in front of the lap beacon again. 

Presuming there are no speed signal irregularities, a fixed length of test track will produce a measured distance with 

a degree of variation. This variation can be considerable if there are a lot or corners and a different driving line is 

used for each piece of data. 

The only solution is to fix the data to 2 known values, one being the beginning at zero meters and the other being 

the end of lap distance from the first comparison lap selected. Using this fixed range, all comparison data is either 

stretched or compressed in distance to make a perfect fit. 

Skip distance alignment – Use if comparing data of significant length variation. 

Align to maximum distance – Uses the maximum length of the first comparison data selected. 

Align to minimum distance - Uses the minimum length of the first comparison data selected. 

Align to average distance - Uses the average length of all comparison data 

Align to – You define the distance in meters 

Press to open the Channel browser, double click to select your 

Space channel – Choose a channel which contains your vehicle 

distance is meters 

Leave blank – decimals are not supported or required 

See notes below – ref distance alignment 

Always leave active – This feature improves the visualisation of data 

when the X axis of a graph is set to Distance. See notes below. 

Max difference – Define a permissible tolerance, which is acceptable for the alignment process. If your data 

exceeds this limit you will be prompted with a warning and offered the choice to align or not. 

Exclude test laps – The alignment process will only be carried out with data containing a beacon > beacon 

structure. 

Distance interpolation – All data is captured with reference to a time base (Hz). The distance resolution is however 

only 1m, this means there may be many actual measuring points within each meter. When viewing data against X 

axis distance this function automatically interpolates the 1m resolution to avoid visual distortion of data. It is 

recommended to leave this function ON.

These special channels are used by Data View to create the circuit (test track) shape. Remember that the shape 

created will be based on the driving line taken, and may not identically represent the circuit layout. 

Choose the channel, which contains your vehicle speed in Kmh 

Choose the channel, which contains your vehicle lateral G 

Choose the channel, which contains your vehicle longitudinal G 

Offsets – For data which has not been correctly calibrated it is possible to apply offsets both positive and negative 

to trim the circuit shape computation. For most situations it is preferable to leave at 0

The options given here are purely for adjustment of the way the circuit is displayed. 

Auto correction ON 

Circuit rotation with 90deg movements 


Activate if your circuit shape is a mirror image of the true circuit. 

When active this will join together both ends of the circuit shape 

regardless of the calculated final position. 

It is also presumed that the start and end of lap will join together in a 

straight line.

The User function allows a number of different operators to use the same PC without 

modifying or affecting the functions defined by other users. To create a new user 

select Setup / User / Create to display this window. Give a name then press OK. 

Each new user will be given a unique sub folder c:\dataview\setup\NEWUSER

The message history requires no configuration from the user, it is simly a visual record of activities and any warning 

messages that have occurred during recent activity. In the event of any system problems you may be requested to 

send a TXT file showing the message history to the system supplier. 

To access the history, select View / message history to open this window.

3. Capture configuration – Overview

Data view offers a vast range of options to manage the way data is captured from the logger, as well as data storage 

and data management. The following sections will cover every configuration option. The actual download process 

will be covered in section 4. 



3.1 Capture / Setup acquisition 

Select Capture / Setup acquisitions to display this window.

When active, the download process will begin immediately that the 

presence of a device with new data is recognised. For more information 

about manual & automatic downloads refer to section 4.3 

Select a source for the data. 

Local disk = internal flash memory of the data logger 

Flash card = PCMCIA memory card for use with Cobra only. 

Auto re-start – Following a sucessful download the logger will wait for 2 

minutes or until the cable is disconnected before resuming the logging. 

If Auto restart is active the logging process will begin immediately the 

acquisition trigger becomes valid following the download. For more 

information refer to the Table manager manual. 



3.2 Capture / acquisition files / options / manual

The entire capture system is based around the possibility of connecting to 4 different vehicles, each vehicle having a 

known driver. These are referred to as Car_1 to Car_4. This is the default setting for Data View

Select Capture / acquisition files / options tab to display the following window. 


The entire capture system is used to automatically manage the data storage, file naming and tagged data. A file tree 

structure will be created for you as shown at the bottom of this page. 

Run recognition - Whenever a new Run is incremented the download process will create a completely new and 

separate data file. If switched off, all data downloads from that logger will be included within the same file. 

Car recognition – When switched off, the Alias and identification of the logger is not considered. 

These folders are created from the 

‘Alias’ name of the logger 

Choose - Automatic 

Select the PC communication method you are using 

Select this to ensure automatic device recognition 

Used for ‘off ground’ testing of the car,

The system has the capability to have unique settings for 4 different vehicles, known within the software as car1, 

car2, car3, car4. Each data logger (vehicle) is identified to Data View using the Alias that was attributed to the logger 

at the time the configuration table was programmed into it. 

This tab allows you to associate a ‘car configuration’ to a logger Alias. 

Enter any additional text using these fields. 

Use this pull down to select which Car you will be working with, if 

you only have one logger it is recommended to choose Car_1 

Press the Browse button to show a list of all 

loggers that have been connected recently, 

any loggers that are currently connected will 

be shown in Bold.

for the session. In Run System mode the values of Track and

The previous section 3 shows all of the download configuration options, this section deals with the actual act of 

downloading the data. 

The internal memory of any data logger is referred to as Local Disk, the Shark logger removable memory is referred 

to as Flash Card. 

Note: Before any download can be made, your logger must be visible within the DK-Link program. 



4.1 – Memory / Shark

The Shark data logger has 2 totally independent memory locations which are written to simultaneously. The Local 

Disk (internal flash) is either 128Mb or 256Mb, depending on logger specification. The removable flash card memory 

may be any size as long as it is larger the Auto Lap limit which is typically 40Mb. 

Lap storage 

The data is divided within the logger as separate files; the file division is normally created when a lap beacon signal 

is seen. With this method the user is able to download individual laps rather than removing all of the laps stored in 

memory. A download of multiple laps only creates a single file on your PC. 

Latest data - on/off 

From table Manager the user is able to decide which type of memory management is used. 

Latest data on – When the logger memory becomes full the oldest lap file is deleted from memory as an entire block 

Latest data off - When the logger memory becomes full the memory storage stops, new data can only be stored if 

the Clear data command is used. See section 5.1 

Auto lap Limit 

This is an internally imposed maximum size for any one internal lap file, when the limit of 40Mb (typical Shark 

setting) is reached a new lap file is automatically created. This Auto lap Limit is needed for data security, systems 

which do not use a lap timing beacon may fill up the memory without ever seeing a lap beacon signal, the latest data 

function would then automatically remove the oldest lap file, which in this scenario would be all of the data. The 

40Mb Auto lap limit avoids this possible problem. 

Notes about Auto lap limit 

The internal channels Time and Space are not incremented by Auto lap limit 

The LAP counter is not incremented by Auto lap limit 

The ABS lap counter does increment at the Auto lap limit 

The LAPTIM message records the time from logger on to the previous Auto lap limit 

Auto lap limit is applied to Local disk as well as flash card memory. 

The size of the auto lap limit is a compromise between ensuring that the Auto lap limit does not interfere with the 

normal lap beacon > lap beacon events and possible data loss resulting from use without a beacon. 

The maximum data throughput of the Shark at 64,000 bytes per second (typical value) means that at maximum 

acquisition rate the 40Mb (40,000,000 bytes) / 64,000 = 10minutes (approx) between each Auto lap limit. This would 

never normally conflict with a race car lap. 

Memory storage 

Starting from a logger with empty flash card and empty Local disk, the data is stored to both locations 

simultaneously. At the point of memory being full, the earliest lap file is deleted from both the Local disk and Flash 

card. 

If a blank or partially filled memory card is inserted into a logger with stored data in Local disk memory the 2 storage 

locations become out of synchronisation. This is not a problem and they both then work independently of each other, 

this situation also occurs when a flash card of larger memory size is used. 

The Shark logger does not need the Flash card in order to function. If no card is inserted, the logger can be 

downloaded in the normal Ethernet method using the Local disk only. 

When using the Flash card to transfer data, the Local disk memory is mostly redundant and only used as a back up 

source in case of Flash card failure.

4.3 – Manual download / Manual system (Cobra & Shark – Direct cable download) 

In this mode you should have the following system configurations. 

• Capture / Acquisition files / Options – Set to Manual System 

• Capture / Setup Acquisitions – Auto download switched OFF 


Press the E button on the upper tool bar to display the following 

window. You are given the opportunity to make any adjustments 

to the data you have already entered. 

Press Next to continue 

Ensure that you have selected the correct Car from the pull down 

menu. The Connection shown at the bottom of this window will 

indicate if the correct device is available on the network 

Press Auto to use the default download directory and create a 

unique file name. 

File names for car_1 will end in C0, car_2 will end in C1, car_3 

will end in C2, car_4 will end in C3. 

Each new download using this file name will create a new run 

number that is attached to the end of the file name as _RUN0x 

You are completely free to type in your own file name and use an 

alternative data directory. 

Press Start to establish communication with the logger. Correct communication is shown by the bottom left of the 

screen stating ‘fast Ethernet download enabled and the E button on the tool bar will turn red. To view the data in the 

logger memory, select Capture / data logger manager / select laps, or press this button on the toolbar. 

Highlight the laps (data) you want to download and then press the 

Download button. 

Multiple laps can be downloaded using the CTRL or arrow keys in 

the normal Windows way. 

At the end of download your last lap of data will be automatically 

loaded into the data header bar at the top of the screen.

5. Connection tools

Connecting to a data logger does not necessarily mean that you have to perform a ‘download’. The method of 

connection is however almost identical. 

From the upper menu ensure that the Auto Download button is switched off, in this way there will be no attempt by 

the logger to extract data. Then activate the Ethernet by pressing the E button 

Press here to activate Ethernet 

Press Next to skip this window. Because you 

are not planning to capture data it is not 

necessary to enter any information. 

Switch OFF the Auto download button 

Press Start to initiate the Ethernet link. Because you 

are not planning to capture data it is not necessary to

If you have not already Run the DK-Link program you will be presented with the 

following notice. Press Run to activate DK-Link which will appear at the bottom of 

your screen as a new window. 

If all is configured and connected correctly DK link will show the presense of a data logger similar to the image 

shown below, and the bottom right of your computer screen will show the logger table name and the Alias of the 

device.

The Clear data command deletes all stored data from the logger memory, as well as returning the Run counter to 1. 

For more information about memory management refer to sections 4.1 and 4.2 

Note: This process requires an active Ethernet connection & your logger must be visible within the DK-Link program. 

From the upper menu select Capture / Data logger / Clear data. You will be given 

the following confirmation box. Press OK to clear data and check the bottom left of 

your screen to ensure that you have received confirmation of process completion 

Note: You logger will now wait for the cable disconnection or the 120sec timeout before resuming any logging 

activity.

Following a Clear data command no logging activity will begin until either the cable is disconnected or the 120sec 

automatic timeout is reached. This delay can be by-passed using the re-start command.

completion is seen at the bottom left of the screen, as seen here.

This configuration environment gives the user a series of controls for the way in which Data View functions and 

displays the information. 

From the upper menu select Setup / General / Graphs to display this window. 

Show grid – Background grid on all analysis windows 

Auto Scale – See section 9 for all scaling options 

Auto Connect – Links the cursors within all analysis windows to show the same time or distance position 

Auto connect zoom – The same level of zoom will be applied to all analysis windows. 

Auto align Y scales – Ensures that the left hand edge of all tiled graph windows are vertically aligned 

Keep zoom after changing layout – The current zoom level is retained after the window layout is changed 

Keep zoom after changing lap – The current zoom level is retained after the lap data is changed 

Font size – Font size may be changed to suit different screen resolutions and also to maximise the usable analysis 

area.

Auto RX updates the analysis window as each lap is downloaded. This can slow down the download process, 

especially if the analysis windows have complicated virtual channels. 

Lap definition – This is defined in section 2.1 

By default the Auto RX is active for both Real time data and 

Ethernet data sources. To adjust these options double click the 

Auto RX line to display this window. 

Switch off the data sources that are not required, by default all 

are switched on 

Auto RX remote – Similar to Auto RX but with the data source on a remote host PC.

The colours tab gives you control over the display area as well as the data contained within the analysis windows. 

Windows background – Outside border of analysis window

Add – create customised colour schemes 

Comparison – Whenever a comparison of more than one data set is 

selected, the data will be represented using the colours defined in this 

comparison table. 

In this example the first data set selected will be shown as yellow, the 

second selection as red, etc. 

Your colours should be chosen to give the clearest representation against your selected Boxes background. You do 

not need to worry about light colours not printing as colour swap is available in the print menu, section 25. 

Experience has shown that all backgrounds black, with very light colours for your comparison work the best, with 

yellow best of all.

Example of the use of a file constant: 


During the download process Constants may be created and 

attached to any data file that is captured from a specified data 

logger. 

Constants may be used within Virtual channels to make your 

mathematical output specific to the data from each logger. 

Within this Constants menu it is possible to view any Constants 

that have been allocated during download, add any new ones as 

you want, or edit the values of any. 

Constants may be saved or loaded into other data file sets using 

the Load and Save As functions 

For more information see section 3.9 

To work out the mathematical spring load based on spring movement the mathematics would be a simple mm of 

movement x spring rate. Where the mm of movement is measured using the logger as a variable value and the 

spring rate is a fixed constant. 

Now consider a comparison of two peaces of data where the spring rate is different for each. The mathematics must 

now be mm of movement from data file 1 x spring rate 1 compared to mm of movement from data file 2 x 

spring rate 2. 

The spring rate is defined using the data file constants so that the mathematical comparison remains accurate.

Text constants may be used to create a database of facts relating

Channel info allows you to modify the name of individual channels and the number of decimal places. From your 

data browser window highlight the file you wish to work with, then select Edit / Edit channel info from the upper menu

All of your channel names are given on the left side. All values 

may be edited as well as adding a text notation to each. 

This function is of vital importance when trying to compare data 

files with similar data but different channel names.

Under most conditions this function is not required as it is performed automatically during the download, providing 

that the configurations have been set as shown in section 2.1. For data which has been downloaded into a computer 

that has not been configured correctly the user can choose to make the necessary configuration changes and then 

re-define the laps within the data browser under the tools menu Tools / Define laps / Search laps 

For data which has not been defined into laps via the lap input beacon it is possible to manually split a large piece of 

data in smaller sections (laps). 

The first step is to define the positions within your data for the split 

points. Open your single lap of data using the data browser and 

visualise this within a graph window. 

From the upper menu, select Utility / Define Laps / Manual definition.

The export as DTX enables a group of laps within a Run to be re-assembled into one single lap, or simply as a renaming 

tool. 

Choose a file name and a folder to store the export file, the Save

from the Tools menu, select Export / DTX…. To display the 

window on the left.

The channel browser can be toggled on/off using the F2 key and removed by pressing 

the X at the top left or by pressing Esc on the keyboard. The channel browser will 

show all channels that are available in the current loaded data file + mathematical 

channels (virtual) + real time radio channels. 

Within this simple list there are a number of subtle bits of information. 

• All channels that are taken from the logger as real measured channels are 

yellow 

• All white channels are mathematical (virtual) creations formed within Data 

View 

• Channels with this marking have been given a fixed scaling 

parameter, see section 9.3 

• Channels with a dot at the bottom right have a filter applied 

within their parameters, see section 9.4 

• Channels with a red dot at the upper left have been 

allocated an alarm range, see section 10.0 / 10.1 


To add any channel from the channels Browser to any analysis window, simply drag ‘n’ drop. Normal Windows 

functions of using the Ctrl or arrow keys to make multiple selections may be used.

The channel browser may be modified by clicking anywhere in the window with the right mouse button and selecting 

Setup to display this window. 

Use the check boxes to turn off/on the type of channel you want to see. 

UDA channels – Any channels that are sourced by cable / memory card download 

directly from the data logger. 

Virtual channels – Any mathematical channel 

Realtime channels – Any channels received via radio link. It is normal when using 

radio telemetry to have multiple channels of the same name. Example – RPM channel captured via normal cable 

method may be higher frequency than the same RPM channel that has been captured via radio link, you choose 

which one you want to analyse. 

Dock list – When active the channel browser will lock itself to the left hand edge of the screen, when – un-docked 

the window will be free floating.

Data view has a great many options for scaling the data with 2 levels of manual scaling as well as fully automatic. 

Depending on the settings chosen, the following rules can be used to determine which set of scaling data is being 

applied to a channel. 

Local manual scale – section 9.6 - When applied to the channel within the analysis window. Regardless of any 

other settings, this will always be used and will take priority over other settings 

Auto scale / General setup – section 9.1 – Providing there are no local scales automatic scaling will be applied to 

all channels based on their max / min values within the analysis window. 

Channel parameter – section 9.2 – Providing there is no local scaling and auto scale is switched off, the channel 

will be scaled using the range defined in Parameters. If there is no parameter set, no local scale and Auto scale is 

turned off, Auto scale will be applied.

in Parameters. If there is no parameter set, no local scale and Auto scale is turned off, Auto scale will be applied. 

The easiest way to create a channel parameter is to open the Channel 

Browser (F2) then right click the channel you want to set a parameter for 

as shown here. Select Add to Parameters to display the following 

window.

Providing there is a parameter created for a channel (section 9.2), you are able to apply a Run Average filter. These 

filters are time based and will create a smoother set of data which gets smoother the longer the time base. 

There are however some important things to remember. 

• Any mathematical channels that use a filtered channel in their calculation will be affected by the amount of 

filtering. Example – A damper position sensor gives a very fast moving trace, which can be better seen 

using a high filter to create an average value, any damper rate of change mathematics would give a very 

poor reading based on filtered raw data. 

• There is little point in sampling very fast if it is your intention to smooth everything out.

are frequency based and are used to include / exclude certain frequency ranges from your data. 

Within your channel parameter window, select FFT from the Filter pull down menu. 

Define up to 3 filters from the following types and enter your chosen frequency range.

Any channel you configure within Alarms is continuously monitored within the data set you are viewing. 

To activate the alarms system, select Setup / General / Search from the upper menu to display the following window. 

Use the pull down box to choose from one of the following 

OFF – No Alarm search 

Show Alarms – Automatically show any Alarm that exceeds 

your limits. 

Show All – Permanently show all Alarms regardless of state. 

To create an Alarm, select Configure / Alarms from the upper menu to display this wiondow. 

Press Add to create an Alarm as shown here. 

Double click the entry to open the configuration window. 

The OK range is considered as the normal working range of the channel 

The valid range is the maximum working range of the sensor, outside of this is

Tip – Any highlighted graph window may be swapped for any other graph window using the CTRL-D keyboard

11.6 – Graph / Time or Distance 

All data is captured using a time reference (Hz) therefore the standard method of analysis uses Time as the X axis 

for any graph window. There are however occasions when the Distance axis is more suitable, such as comparisons 

over a fixed distance (Lap against L.ap) 

The problem of comparing two sets of data against Time are shown on the graph comparison below. Each set of 

data covers the same section of track 

and start at the same physical point, 

the gradual misalignment of data is a 

function of the difference in time each 

vehicle takes to cover the same 

distance, as shown here 

Data misalignment 

This same piece of data when viewed using Distance completely removes the misalignment because the data is 

referenced to a physical position on 

the track rather than a time. 

Presuming that both pieces of data 

cover the same distance there will be 

no misalignment. To understand this 

process more thoroughly, read section

11.7 – Graph / X axis Shift 

Each set of data begins starts from one of the following functions: Power on / Trigger active / lap beacon. When 

comparing 2 or more sets of data, the event you wish to compare may occur at a different Time from the beginning 

of the data set, for this reason it is necessary to shift either an individual channel or and entire set of data either left 

or right to make it align with other data channels. 

The following piece of data shows a damper measurement over a fixed bump in the track, the blue and red channels 

are from different vehicles and have hit the bump at a 

different time within the data set. This is shown my the 

misalignment of the comparison.

All data is taken with reference to a Time base in Hz. Each channel graph is made up of actual measuring points 

and interpolated points. To be sure that the data you are seeing is a real measured point select the Snap option 

from the lower menu, and choose the frequency range that matches your chosen channel. 

You will see that the cursor will only rest on an actual measuring point.

12. X-Y Analysis

The XY window allows any one channel to be used as a reference and a number of other channels to be plotted 

against it to analyse relationships. 

XY data may be viewed in a number of different ways, as shown below in this example of oil pressure / engine 

speed analysis. The diagram clearly shows oil pressure increasing as engine speed increases, this is a simple 

example of a relationship. 

Important note – When using a layout of graph and XY window the cursor within the XY window will represent the

The Manual positioning is used when multiple secondary channels are being overlaid onto the single reference 

channel. In this example, RPM is the reference 

channel, OILP and SPEED and the secondary 

channels. The default XY window property setting for 

this is Overlay to produce a window as shown here. 

To use manual scaling, first change the XY window 

properties to Manual layout and then adjust each 

individual channel to use as much space as you 

choose. The following settings will produce an XY 

window as shown at the bottom of this page.

Properties. 

For channels which have a limited number of acquisition points it can be very difficult to visualise the relationship 

trends within the XY window. For this reason the Interpolate function fills in the missing areas to an amount specified 

by you. 

The reverse of this allows channels with a high frequency and a great many data points to be reduced to a lower 

frequency. 

From the channel properties window, use the pull down menu to choose the amount of interpolation.

The XYZ window allows any one channel to be used as a reference, a second channel plotted against it to display a 

relationship and a third channel overlaid onto this data as different colours. 

XYZ data may be viewed in 2 different ways, as shown below in this example of Time / Y- later al G and oil pressure. 

The diagram clearly shows a lateral G trace (Y) with the oil pressure overlaid as different colours. 

Important note – When using a layout of graph and XY window the cursor within the XY window will represent the 

same data location as the cursor within the graph window, zoom levels are also maintained providing this option is

The channel defined as Z uses colours to display the data as an overlay onto the X and Y channels. The number or 

colour divisions, the value at each division and the colours allocated to each division are by default set to automatic. 

To change these settings, first open the XYZ properties window and then select Manual from the pull down menu

The Rotate option allows you to switch around your chosen channel set by moving upwards by a step of 1 as shown

The Histogram window allows any channel to be viewed as a histogram. The user is given full control over the 

display type and the amount of data represented. Comparison data is also supported. 

Histograms may be viewed as either Horizontal or Vertical as shown in the examples below.

Trend analysis allows you to plot significant data events for any channel against the Lap counter. In this way the 

gradual change of value can be seen as a progression, as well as the interaction with other channels. A simple 

example of this is a gradual reduction in oil pressure as the oil temperature rises. 

To view the entire trend for a session containing multiple laps, it is only necessary to open any one lap. 

Comparisons are not supported. 

Tip – If a Trend window is open as new data is being captured, the trend will be gradually built lap by lap, by the end 

of download you will already have a reasonable indication of engine status without needing further analysis.
