Many laboratories employ disk diffusion as their primary AST method or use this for backup testing of their automated system. However, there are disadvantages to employing disk diffusion testing. The most important drawback is the inability of disk diffusion to provide a quantitative MIC result. As has been stated above, the reporting of an MIC result can be crucial information in a number of clinical situations. Additionally, disk diffusion is unsuitable for testing large molecules such as vancomycin and for some “difficult” drugs such as daptomycin.
