"I ended up in Ohio and got rolling again and became the leading rider at the Cleveland area tracks almost every year until the late 10's. "Then I got into the regular Kentucky racing circuit. Keeneland in the spring and the fall and Churchill Downs in the late spring and November, in fact my home is in Lexington. My wife and six kids stay there all year round." Manganello has no problem with his weight He is slightly more than five feet tall, but has the muscular upper torso that is so important to a jockey who must control the 1,000 pound, high strung thoroughbreds. After 10 years of riding and going to the post more than 14,5000 times. Manganello doesn't play the role of the crusjy old veteran as he remains one of the most cheerful personalities in the Jockey quarters. "1 try to get along with everybody and I'm always there to help any young rider who comes to me for advice." he said. His many years of experience make Manganello a good source for opinions on the present state of thoroughbred racing "Nowadays they are taking better care of the track's condition and they have make improvements for the people living on the backside (bam area) with tional centers and other thinp," he said. "Everybody seems to be getting a fair shake now, but in the old days the big outfits got their way with everything, but now the track managments are giving breaks to the tittle man, too." On the modem horse medication laws (phenylbutazone, a pain killing drug, was allowed for the first time in Michigan last year following the leads of other states) ManaganeUo said: "Bute is good in some cases...but like everything else it's abused. Trainers use it just to get through the entry box and out on the track, but they're not the majority." After the first couple of weeks at the DRC meet, Manganello has shown Detroit racing fans the ability that has won those 2.300 plus career victories. The lessons came in surprise fashion for the bettors Two of Manganello's early winners returned mutual payoffs of $106.40 and $06.20 for a $2 bet. "I guess when ôu don't start off winning a lot of races on the first couple of days they get to overlook you and bet on some other jockey that's hot at the time." Manganello rationalized. Detroit fans will have the opportunity to see Manganello in action until October when he returns to Keeneland in Lexington. Argonauts led by Rough-Fores Just as Jack Nicklaus is the number one player on the professional golf circuit, the Rough-Fores are currently in the number one position in the Argonauts Golf League The league, played at Idyl Wyld Golf Course, has the Rouh-Fores leading with 156 points. The Partenders are in the second spot with 139 points, while Harlan's Hookers are a close third with 137 points and the Fairway Duffers are in the fourth and final play-off position with 134 points. The Bunker Dunkers are in the fifth position with 105 points, while the Partusters fill in the final spot with 95 points The Partenders beat the Bunker [Junkers last week 18-14. The Parbusters knocked off Harlan's Hookers 19-13 and the Rough-Fores whipped the Fairway Duffers 20-12. Daly raps Americans Daly Restaurant ended its regular-season play last weekend in the Women's Fastpitch League with a 17-11 softball win over the Americans Daly concluded its cambaign with a 7-1 record and has a bye tomorrow (Friday) night as the other four teams play their final games Daly built a 17-3 lead over the Americans in the first three innings of their tussle, then saw its foe crack eight hits for seven runs in the fifth inning to make things a bit closer. First baseman Nancy Jimenez slammed her first home run in two seasons for Daly. She slugged a grand slam in the third inning. Mary Rose contributed three singles and a walk to the Americans' offensive cause In the second game of the night, in what could be described as the upset of the sea- Skirmish slated outside Plymouth Men in blue will meet men in grey on a field west of Plymouth this weekend (Aug. 14-15) to re-enact a page from American history. Although the occasion is called a skirmish, the only "casualties" will be wooden stakes and clay pigeons, which will be shattered to the cheers of friendly contestants More than 250 costumed shooters from muzzleloading clubs across the midwest are expected to attend the Northwest Territories "Lone Star" Regional Skirmish The festivities will be held four miles west o* Plymouth at 6700 Napier Road north of North Territorial Road The Western Wayne County Conservation Association has donated its land facilities for the two-day skirmish The public will be admitted without charge, although a parking fee will be as- sessed Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Spectators will be able to follow each team's progress as volley after volley is fired from the front-loading guns. Targets are intended to be visual. They include clay pigeons, which burst when struck by thunm-sized bullets, and heavy wooden planks, which must actually be sawed in half by each team's massed fire. To round out the event, the 5th Michigan Regimental Band will be on hand Sunday to perform patriotic music of the 1800s Each of the group's 150 members will be authentically dressed in the style of the regiment, which saw action during the civil war.
