CYFLOC HX-600 high performance
red mud flocculant
CYFLOC HX-600 flocculant is an emulsion based
product for use in alumina plants to settle mud in
red mud clarifiers or CCD mud washing circuits. It
contains hydroxamate functional groups that provide
high settling rates and significantly reduced suspended
solids in overflows.
Typical Properties
Appearance Gray viscous liquid
Specific gravity 1.12 ± 0.02
Bulk viscosity 25ºC
#2 Spindle 12 Rpm 500-2000 cps
Freezing point -10ºC (14ºF)
Flash point,
Pensky-Martens closed cup >103ºC (217ºF)
Shelf life Six months at room
temperature
Performance Benefits
• Overflow suspended solids are reduced by 50% or more,
resulting in significant improvements in filtration.
• Rapid settling rates allow for high throughput in
settler operation.
• Improved rheological properties of underflow solids
result in less torque on the thickener rake system.
• Process variability is reduced due to steadier operation
of the clarifier section.
• Very robust; handles difficult settling bauxites.
• The liquid emulsion form offers better handling
characteristics than powders, particularly in humid
climates.
• Replaces starch/polyacrylate for convenient “one
product” handling, high performance red mud
flocculant.
Principal Uses
www.cytec.com
CYFLOC HX-600 was specifically developed for high
performance settling and clarification of digester blowoff
slurry and thickening of washed red mud. CYFLOC
HX-600 has shown the best response of good settling
and compaction, commensurate with excellent clarities
in several alumina operations.
Treatment Level
The quantity of CYFLOC HX-600 required for
effective settling depends upon the type of bauxite
being processed, as well as process conditions.
Red Mud, (dry basis)
Primary settlers 150-350 g/t
CCD circuit (each thickener) 10-200 g/t
Application
CYFLOC HX-600 is dissolved in condensate or weak
solids free liquor (5-20 g/l NaOH) to make a stock
solution. The stock solution is further diluted and
mixed with decanter feed via dual addition. A portion
of the solution is added into the feed line and the rest
into the feedwell.
Preparation of Stock Solutions
CYFLOC HX-600 should be thoroughly mixed in
the storage container prior to initial use. A tank
mixer should be run for about 30 minutes to ensure
preparation of smooth, uniform product.
The CYFLOC HX-600 emulsion is broken by
combining it with appropriate process water at ≤50ºC
to give a stock solution. The breaking process requires
the use of a shear mixing device to ensure complete
flocculant dissolution. The stock solution should be aged
at least 30 minutes before use.
The stock solution concentration ranges from 0.5-2.0%
depending on plant requirements. The stock solution
is further diluted to about 0.2% or less before mixing
with decanter feed. The secondary dilution step is best
accomplished by in-line mixing close to the flocculant
addition point, which minimizes the risk of flocculant
shear degradation.
Cytec will provide assistance in choosing appropriate
storage tanks and mixing devices, and help with the
design of a polymer preparation and dilution system.
Health and Safety
CYFLOC HX-600 has toxicological properties similar
to those of other polyacrylamide-based flocculants.
Direct contact with this material may cause severe eye
and skin irritation. Inhalation overexposure may cause
irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes. It contains
about 2% sodium Hydroxide and has a strong odor of
ammonia. Refer to the appropriate Material Safety Data
Sheet for further details of proper handling and storage.
Shipping
CYFLOC HX-600 is shipped in 55-gallon (200-liter),
non-returnable, lined steel drums, returnable or nonreturnable
300-gallon (1,000-liter) polyethylene totes,
in bulk road tankers and isotainers. Bulk shipments are
44,000 lbs (20 tons). For more detailed information
on shipment please contact your local Cytec sales
representative or local sales office.
Handling and Storage
CYFLOC HX-600 should be stored at temperatures
between 40º and 90ºF (5-30ºC). Do not allow the
product to freeze. Avoid the use of aluminum, copper,
iron or mild steel in storage systems. Storage in
glass, stainless steel, plastic or epoxy-lined vessels is
recommended. Please contact your local Cytec sales
office for further information on appropriate storage
tank cooling materials.
