The son of legendary psychedelic filmmaker
Alejandro Jodorowsky (Holy Mountain, Santa
Sangre), Adan Jodorowsky is a polyglot who sings
in Spanish, French, and English. As a child, James
brown taught him how to dance and george
harrison, who was friends with his parents, gave him
his first guitar lessons. Amador is his US debut, and
as the name would imply the songs are romantic,
dark, and obsessed with love (“amador” is Spanish
for “lover”). Running the gamut from seductive
cosmic folk to funky cabaret, Amador includes a
collaboration with Devendra banhart and a handful
of songs with lyrics contributed by father Alejandro.
Press Quotes
“Splits his time between Mexico City, Los Angeles,
Paris, and anywhere the tour for his melancholy new
album, Amador, takes him. Catch him if you can.”
— New York Times magazine
“His playing is Randy Newman-esque, with whimsy
and a slight Western twang, only the lyrics are
whispered in Spanish at leonard Cohen depths.
Sometimes the songs venture into creepy, sultry, and
carnivalesque, with some burlesque instrumentation,
like a muffled trumpet. It doesn’t make you happy
per se, but it captures your mood so well that you
fall in love all over again.” — MTV Iggy
overview
Widely considered to be the “barbra Streisand of
Japan,” Saori Yuki released her debut album in
Japan in 1969 and went on to make over 30 albums
in her 42 years. Yuki discovered Pink Martini after
the band covered her song “Taya Tan” for their
2007 album Hey Eugene! Most recently, she sang
a verse of “Silent Night” in Japanese for the band’s
hit 2010 holiday album Joy To The World.
In honor of the year of her debut release, Saori Yuki
partnered with Pink Martini and producer Thomas
M. Lauderdale to create a loving tribute to the music
released in 1969. Featuring Japanese pop hits
alongside internationally recognized tunes like Jorge
ben’s “Mas que nada” and “Puff the Magic Dragon,”
1969 is a brilliant collaboration featuring Thomas M.
Lauderdale’s magical arrangements, Pink Martini’s
stellar musicianship, and Saori Yuki’s soaring vocals.
SKiN GRAFT Records is proud to announce its
100 th release, the debut album from RUINS Alone.
Originally conceived as a power trio, Japan’s RUINS
was formed by drummer/vocalist Yoshida Tatsuya
in 1985. Countless tours and numerous recordings
would follow, and Tzomborgha, released in 2002 by
Ipecac Records, would be their last full-length.
In 2005, RUINS unveiled one last song,
“Gwodhunqa,” for a SKiN gRAFT/Relapse Records
co-release. In the summer of that year Yoshida took
on the task of performing the music of RUINS
solo, with a different guest bass player in each
city, embarking on the “Bassist Wanted Tour.”
From this point on, Yoshida would continue RUINS
as a one-man act, touring as RUINS Alone—and
was chosen by matt groening to perform at All
Tomorrow’s Parties in May 2010.
It’s been nearly 10 years since the last RUINS
album was released. Now, having traveled the
world time and time again, refining RUINS for the
21 st century, Yoshida is ready to release the debut
album from RUINS Alone. These 23 tracks feature
all-new compositions as well as new recordings of
classic RUINS songs sporting new arrangements.
Press Quotes
“The main riff is as stubbornly assured as anything
bad brains put to wax, and lest you get bored during
its eight seconds, another wild-ass riff is there to
take its place, again and again.” — Pitchfork
“RUINS explore string-popping ideas only to
degenerate into complex whirlpools of distortion,
then regroup into a new version of their original
idea with surprising grace. RUINS grow on you like
a cancerous cell, and are killer.” — CMJ
Journey of One is a pinnacle live performance captured during the zenith
of Steve Roach’s rich tribal-ambient origins of the mid-1990s. The
music rises from the darkness, an ancient voice chants in serpentine
ecstasy only to subside and hover next to silence, soon broken by raging
hybrid trance grooves, didgeridoo, and mind-altering soundscapes that
mesh to form a soundtrack for a future-primal culture. Journey of One is
an ascent into the mystical and primordial places Roach first developed
on Dreamtime Return, Artifacts, Origins, World’s Edge, and his
Suspended Memories collaborations. Roach meticulously, passionately
utilizes the electro-acoustic nature at the heart of this sound: earthy
ferocity and multi-timbral frequencies drawn out to their fullest. The
music shapeshifts between moods, always rushing forward, engaging
a range of electronic and acoustic tools: analog and digital synths, clay
water pots, butterfly cocoons and seedpod shakers, and ocarinas.
The didgeridoos’s hoary sonic quality and a tumbling avalanche of
hand-struck percussion further illustrate the tribal canvas.
This is music that gently rotates around its own axis in a time-suspended
closer to 1999’s Blacktape CD As One Aflame Laid Bare By Desire.
It would take over a decade for the composition to resurface when
co-frontman graham Crabb. This unique band,
whose influence touched the careers of acts such
as The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, still has a
large, strong following worldwide.
After the 1986 debut, Pop Will Eat Itself made its
mark on the independent music world by morphing
from indie-pop wonders into hip-hop/rock crossover
pioneers. Years ahead of their time, PWEI produced
a furious mix of beatboxes, metal riffs, MC’ing, and
pop songs. Industrial grooves, machine-precise
rhythms, and infectious grooves still prevail on New
challenge of creating a classic PWEI album a full
25 years after the first EP release. The result is an
Absolute body Control is back with Shattered Illusion! Dirk Ivens and
Eric van Wonterghem return with a whole new set of classic tracks,
with the roots of low-fi electro. Shattered Illusion is a beautiful nod to
the early roots of electronic pop and industrial. Absolute Body Control
was formed in 1980, and the band members have been influencing
Fans of Daniel Graves’ previous albums won’t be disappointed as All
Beauty Destroyed continues in the dance floor tradition of A Violent
Emotion and Close To Human, though with this new album things take
a decidedly darker and more sinister turn. The first single, “The Devil’s
in the Details,” showcased the evolved sound that Graves expounds
on with the new release. The second single, “Inhuman,” is bound to
keep DJs satisfied with its pulsing rhythm and shout-along vocals.
All Beauty Destroyed promises to be the darkest, most melodic, and
dynamic piece of work Graves has ever created.
Since 2005, Seattle-based Nazca lines have been piecing together
songs that combine emotionally charged lyrics and loud post-rock/punk
instrumentation. Founding members and guitarists Cory Alfano and
Brett Wedeking have stuck it out through a number of lineup changes,
and a solid roster is now in place with the addition of Andy King and
Ryan Minchon on drums and bass, respectively. The foursome writes
music that draws inspiration from a variety of shared influences; when
pressed, most in the band can agree on Refused, At The Drive-In,
and Fugazi. Nazca Lines has a punk lineage that shows initially in
songwriting and energy; however, given a closer inspection the listener
can hear a more contemplative and ponderous side of the band.
Songs of the Jewish-American Jet Set is a proud collection of the
dizzying catalog of Tikva Records, the flagship independent Jewish
record label of 20 th century America.
Founded in 1947, Tikva’s catalog was wide-ranging—everything
from Israeli folk songs to Jewish-American swing, from klezmer pop
to cantorial singing, from Catskills comedy to key political speeches
of Jewish leaders—and it became something of a “Jewish Motown,”
home to the Jewish music world’s biggest names. Despite the fact
that Tikva’s releases were a direct reflection of the major social
themes and cultural shifts of Jewish America in the ’50s and ’60s,
its contributions to American popular music, and Jewish musical and
pop duo hailing from Jacksonville, FL. Not unlike
Wayne Coyne’s Flaming lips, their live show is not
to be missed. Since forming in 2008, the band has
released a handful of EPs and a vinyl single.
In May 2010, SUNBEARS! was selected as one
of the best Unsigned bands by Alternative Press.
As a result, the band was tapped to record a song
for the hit children’s television show Yo Gabba
Gabba and perform several dates on the southeast
tour of YGG’s “Super Music Friends Show.” Their
song & video “Imagination Adventure” aired on
YGG in Spring 2011. In March 2011, SUNBEARS!
officially showcased at SXSW 2011 to a captive
Austin audience.
Their amazing live show and the sheer joy that
their songs exude have put SUNBEARS! in high
demand on the road, with support slots on national
tours with mates of State (barsuk), black Kids
(Columbia Records), Dredg, and gil mantera’s
Party Dream.
Press Quotes
“There’s just no way a sound this big comes from two
guys … but apparently it does.” — Alternative Press
“Who couldn’t use a little auditory uplifting given
the state of the world? I look forward to hearing
and seeing what is next for this talented duo!”
Begun in early 2000, this disc brings together Arto lindsay, mike ladd,
post-No-Wave guitars and urgent rap. Kiki Picasso’s cover places the
Awakened by the pulsing currents of electro ghosts of the ’80s,
The break Up’s sound can be found in addictive synths, beats, and
Sol completed the duo. Later they would add Sarah Stewart on
