desire to join a cheaper countryside life with the<br />
advantages of the closeness of the capital city.<br />
These people were mainly representatives of the<br />
layers of poorer craftsmen, journeymen, officers,<br />
railroaders.<br />
� At the end of the 1880’s the leaders of the town,<br />
especially those who had their properties in<br />
Pestlôrinc, voted for making the town a part of<br />
Budapest. However, the capital rejected their<br />
proposal, thus the town was made to face both the<br />
advantages and disadvantages of independence<br />
in the forthcoming years.<br />
� In 1895 the first local newspaper was published<br />
and from 1896 it was possible to make outgoing<br />
telephone calls from the town, too. At Templom<br />
Square in 1897 the first multi-storey building<br />
appeared which was followed by further ones<br />
along the Üllôi road. By the start of the railway<br />

transport (1885), and the tram lines (1900)<br />
Kispest became more and more attractive. By<br />
1900 altogether 2160 residential buildings had<br />
been built here, and the number of inhabitants<br />
amounted 15 756 persons. The majority of the<br />
young town’s inhabitants was under 40 years.<br />
