As pharmacy schools backed off from educating pharmacists in compounding, the art and science of compounding was nearly lost. But not surprisingly, the need for specialized drugs with individualized dosing did not go away. Now there is a resurgence of demand for compounding pharmacy, driven by the needs of patients not met by the medications available from the drug industry, patients who cannot be treated with standard dosage forms.
