patients. As pharmacy schools backed off from educating pharmacists in compounding,
the art and science of compounding was nearly lost.
But not surprisingly, the need for specialized drugs with individualized dosing did
not go away. Now there is a resurgence of demand for compounding pharmacy, driven by
the needs of patients not met by the medications available from the drug industry,
patients who cannot be treated with standard dosage forms.
Examples of this include Hospice patients who cannot swallow their medications
and need compounded medications in the form of Transdermal creams; patients that are
allergic to preservatives and need preservative free medications; patients that are lactose-
intolerant and need lactose free medications; neonates and pediatric patients that require
drug dosages not available without compounding; and patients that need medications the
drug industry has deemed no longer profitable and discontinued.
