categorizations, we can observe the weaknesses as well as the strengths of our<br />

evidence. By presenting the degree of empirical support for our categories, our<br />

audience can judge for themselves the strength of our evidence and the potential for<br />

error. The computer can help us to do this by cross-tabulating category variables or<br />

mapping out the empirical scope of our concepts and the connections between them.<br />

<strong>Qualitative</strong> analysts have been notoriously reluctant to spell out even in the<br />

vaguest terms the decision-making processes involved in their <strong>analysis</strong>. They have<br />

been reluctant to admit of the possibility of error, preferring to present only such<br />

evidence as supports rather than contradicts their <strong>analysis</strong>. They have tended to rely
