Let us conclude this discussion with an illustration of how the first letter could be<br />

categorized (Illustration 9.8). It should be obvious by now that there is no one ‘right<br />

way’ to do this. The categories we use are not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ but simply more or<br />

less equal to the task. I have already assigned the category ‘temperament’ to the first<br />

<strong>data</strong>bit. I have also devised new categories for other bits of <strong>data</strong> in this letter. Where<br />

the humour relies on stereotypical images of artistic work, I have referred to this by<br />

the category ‘task’. Where the humour relies on catharsis through the emotional<br />

release associated with our fears of the dental chair, I have referred to this by the<br />

category ‘suffering’.<br />

In categorizing this letter, I have modified or refined some of our original<br />

categories, and ignored others. I have focused on incongruity and catharsis as well as<br />

stereotypes as these are prominent elements in the humour. However, these<br />

categories have been adapted to suit the character of the <strong>data</strong>. I have not explored
