Derek Eisenschenk ’11
Management major from Collegeville Township, Minn.
On transferring: I did the transfer program at Ridgewater State in
Willmar. The transition wasn’t too bad since I’ve lived here my whole life.
My parents are part of the Saint John the Baptist parish, so I would
always go to church here. I’ll definitely have more opportunities
as a Johnnie.
On leadership: I will more than likely end up in a business
career that involves helping people, like financial services
or something like that. Interaction with other people
motivates me more than anything else. I chose to emphasize
leadership within my management major because I like
being in charge of others, showing them the way. There
is a correlation between being a leader and being a firstgeneration
student.
On first generation: Being the first to go to college
is somewhat harder because you’re not really sure
what to expect. You don’t have older siblings that
have paved the way for you. My dad is a mechanic,
and my mom works as a seamstress. They mostly
left it up to me, but they did encourage me
along the way, saying that school should be the
first thing on your mind, and you should
strive to do your best and get that
four-year degree.
