The Southwest Zone is all waters draining directly to the Pacific Ocean from the Umpqua River south to the <strong>Oregon</strong>-California border,<br />

<strong>and</strong> including, the Umpqua River drainage; <strong>and</strong> those portions <strong>of</strong> Klamath River drainage in Jackson County. Regulations for marine<br />

fish, marine shellfish <strong>and</strong> marine invertebrates are listed under the Marine Zone, pages 101-109.<br />

Instructions:<br />

1. Read the Special Regulations for this zone. Special Regulations apply to specific bodies <strong>of</strong> water or portions <strong>of</strong> water within a<br />

zone. If specific references to a body <strong>of</strong> water, species, catch limits, length limits, seasons, or other specifications are not made in<br />

the Special Regulations for this zone, then Zone Regulations apply.<br />

2. Read the following Regulations for this zone.<br />

3. Always read the General Regulations, pages 5-12, which apply to all zones, for information about licenses; tags <strong>and</strong> permits;<br />

definitions; catch <strong>and</strong> possession limits; gear <strong>and</strong> bait restrictions; <strong>and</strong> harvest methods <strong>and</strong> hours, before going fishing.<br />

4. Emergency or permanent rules adopted since these rules were printed may supersede these regulations. Anglers may call ODFW<br />

headquarters or regional <strong>of</strong>fices at the numbers on page 4 <strong>of</strong> these regulations, or check the ODFW web site, www.dfw.state.or.us<br />

for these rules, or call 503-947-6000 during normal business hours.<br />

Regulations for this zone:<br />

1. Rogue River tributaries below Lost Creek Dam, Applegate River tributaries below Applegate Dam, all Illinois River tributaries, <strong>and</strong><br />

the Illinois River above Pomeroy Dam are closed to all angling, except as noted under Special Regulations.<br />

2. Angling in streams above tidewater for all species during May 25-Aug. 31 is restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures. See exceptions for<br />

use <strong>of</strong> bait in Rogue, Applegate <strong>and</strong> Umpqua river basins.<br />

3. Use <strong>of</strong> bait allowed in bays <strong>and</strong> tidewaters year round.<br />

4. Anglers may not continue to angle for jack salmon or trout after retaining limit <strong>of</strong> adult salmon or steelhead.<br />

• 8 inch minimum length.<br />

• Only 1 trout over 20 inches in length may be taken per day.<br />

• Rainbow trout over 16 inches are considered steelhead in streams.<br />

• Salmon under 15 inches are considered trout, except coho salmon,<br />

which are always considered salmon regardless <strong>of</strong> size.<br />

• Angling restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures in streams above tidewater,<br />

May 25-Aug. 31. See exceptions under Special Regulations<br />

where use <strong>of</strong> bait is allowed.<br />

• See Special Regulations in SW Zone to determine where harvest <strong>of</strong><br />

any Chinook salmon is allowed. There is no annual limit on adipose<br />

or otherwise fin-clipped salmon or adipose fin-clipped steelhead<br />

as long as the appropriate number <strong>of</strong> Hatchery Harvest Tags have<br />

been purchased to record the catch.<br />

• See exceptions to the Chinook salmon catch limit under Hunter<br />

Creek <strong>and</strong> Pistol River.<br />

• Pink salmon, sockeye salmon <strong>and</strong> adipose fin-clipped coho salmon<br />

may be retained as part <strong>of</strong> the adult <strong>and</strong> jack salmon daily bag limit<br />

in all waters that are currently open to angling for Chinook salmon<br />

or steelhead.<br />

• Hatchery releases <strong>of</strong> coho salmon occur in the Rogue River <strong>and</strong><br />

South Fork Umpqua River.<br />

• Only adipose fin-clipped steelhead may be kept, except as noted<br />

under Special Regulations for the mainstem Illinois, Chetco, Elk,<br />

Pistol, Rogue, Sixes <strong>and</strong> Winchuck rivers <strong>and</strong> Hunter <strong>and</strong> Euchre<br />

creeks.<br />

• Where allowed, no more than a total <strong>of</strong> 1 per day <strong>and</strong> 5 per year nonadipose<br />

fin-clipped steelhead may be taken per year statewide.<br />

• Angling restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures in streams above tidewater,<br />

May 25-Aug. 31. See exceptions under Special Regulations<br />

where use <strong>of</strong> bait is allowed.<br />

Note: Changes to salmon regulations for the ocean, bays, coastal<br />

rivers <strong>and</strong> the Columbia River system (page 96) are printed in May <strong>and</strong><br />

are available at ODFW <strong>of</strong>fices or from license agents. Check for new<br />

regulations before you fish.<br />

• Closed to the retention <strong>of</strong> green sturgeon.<br />

• Minimum fork length 38 inches, maximum fork length 54 inches.<br />

• All oversize, undersize, <strong>and</strong> unwanted legal size sturgeon must be<br />

immediately released unharmed into the water.<br />

• Oversize sturgeon cannot be removed totally or in part from water.<br />

• Only one single-point barbless hook may be used for sturgeon.<br />

• Angling restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures in streams above tidewater<br />
