NORTHWEST ZONE<br />

Description:<br />

The Northwest Zone is all waters north <strong>of</strong> the Umpqua River to the Columbia River that drain directly to the Pacific Ocean, but not<br />

including the Umpqua River drainage, <strong>and</strong> tributaries <strong>of</strong> the Columbia River entering downstream <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> St. Helens. Portions <strong>of</strong><br />

Columbia River tributaries upstream <strong>of</strong> the railroad bridge (near the mouth) are included in the Northwest Zone <strong>and</strong> those portions <strong>of</strong><br />

the tributaries below the railroad bridge (near the mouth) are included in the Columbia River Zone, pages 92-99. Regulations for marine<br />

fish, marine shellfish <strong>and</strong> marine invertebrates are listed under the Marine Zone, pages 101-109.<br />

Instructions:<br />

1. Read the Special Regulations for this zone. Special Regulations apply to specific bodies <strong>of</strong> water or portions <strong>of</strong> water within a<br />

zone. If specific references to a body <strong>of</strong> water, species, catch limits, length limits, seasons, or other specifications are not made in<br />

the Special Regulations for this zone, then Zone Regulations apply.<br />

2. Read the following Regulations for this zone.<br />

3. Always read the General Regulations, pages 5-12, which apply to all zones, for information about licenses; tags <strong>and</strong> permits; definitions;<br />

catch <strong>and</strong> possession limits; gear <strong>and</strong> bait restrictions; <strong>and</strong> harvest methods <strong>and</strong> hours, before going fishing.<br />

4. Emergency or permanent rules adopted since these rules were printed may supersede these regulations. Anglers may call ODFW<br />

headquarters or regional <strong>of</strong>fices at the numbers on page 4 <strong>of</strong> these regulations, or check the ODFW web site, www.dfw.state.or.us<br />

for these rules, or call 503-947-6000 during normal business hours.<br />

Regulations for this zone:<br />

1. Angling for all species in streams above tidewater is restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures May 25-Aug. 31. Use <strong>of</strong> barbless hooks<br />

is required when angling for salmon, steelhead, or trout in the following areas: Youngs Bay Select Area (Clatsop Co.) from the<br />

Highway 101 bridge upstream to markers at confluence <strong>of</strong> Youngs <strong>and</strong> Klaskanine rivers, including lower Lewis <strong>and</strong> Clark River<br />

upstream to Alternate Highway 101 bridge, <strong>and</strong> lower Walluski River upstream to Highway 202 bidge; <strong>and</strong> Gnat Creek (Clatsop Co.)<br />

from railroad bridge upstream to Aldrich Point Road bridge. See exceptions for use <strong>of</strong> bait in Siletz, Nestucca, Trask, Wilson, John<br />

Day, Lewis <strong>and</strong> Clark, Youngs <strong>and</strong> Klaskanine rivers, Big <strong>and</strong> Gnat creeks, <strong>and</strong> Three Rivers.<br />

2. Use <strong>of</strong> bait allowed in bays <strong>and</strong> tidewaters year round.<br />

3. Anglers may not continue to angle for jack salmon or trout after retaining a limit <strong>of</strong> adult salmon or steelhead.<br />

Note: Changes to salmon regulations for the ocean, are printed in<br />

Regulation changes for other water bodies may occur throughout the<br />

year <strong>and</strong> are posted on the ODFW website: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/<br />

resources/fishing/. Check for new regulations before you fish.<br />

• See Special Regulations in NW Zone to determine where harvest<br />

<strong>of</strong> any Chinook salmon is allowed. Harvest <strong>of</strong> non-adipose fin-clipped<br />

steelhead <strong>and</strong> non-adipose fin-clipped coho salmon is prohibited in<br />

the NW Zone except as allowed under Special Regulations for<br />

Siltcoos <strong>and</strong> Tahkenitch lakes. There is no annual limit on adipose<br />

or otherwise fin-clipped salmon or adipose fin-clipped steelhead<br />

as long as the appropriate number <strong>of</strong> Hatchery Harvest Tags have<br />

been purchased to record the catch.<br />

Northwest<br />

• Angling restricted to artificial flies <strong>and</strong> lures in streams above tidewater<br />

May 25-Aug. 31. See exceptions under Special Regulations where<br />
